Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 06:13:19 -0400
Hello everyone;
I just installed Redhat linux 5.2 on my sony vaio notebook. When I try to
configure ppp and sound , it complains that my kernel does not support it.
So I try to run kerneld from control panel, I got the following error:
Starting kerneld; veriosn 2.1.85(pid 383)
I am sorry, but your /boot/module-info-2.0.36 file is missing and I cannot
do without it.
I checked the said directory and find the following files:
/boot/System.map-2.0.36-0.7
/boot/module-info-2.0.36-0.7
/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
and three other binary files.
I was able to read the System.map-2.0.36-0.7 and module-info-2.0.36-0.7
Could somebody help?

I`m not an expert in this, but far as I know, raid is completely independent
of filesystems. The filesystem is created on running raid mdx (I did that
already), so you should be able to create every filesystem you want.
> how to know which hard disk dead?
A good question which I asked myself before. Ive not done it yet, but you
could pipe sort of email "cat /proc/mdstat" to yourself
regularly. If you find something which immediately tells you breaking disks
it would be kind of telling me too.
> and how to replace hard disk?
With scsi, you should be able to hot-plug (but read Howtos before doing
that). For replacing IDE-disks you must reboot and raidhotadd them. They
resync automatically.

without more info probably it is hard for anybody to help you.
You need at least 2 partition, /boot and / (root)
The /boot may be only 50 mb or so. I give it about 64 mb.
The / needs at least 2.8 gb because the /usr alone takes 2.4 gb or so.
I have a 13gb hard disk, and partition it as
/boot = 64mb; / = 1.2gb; /home = 200mg; /var = 1.7gb; else for /usr #
approx. 7gb
Hope this may help

My Windows (r) are in full blossom now,
but I know it won't last long!
I just spend maybe 10 hours over 4 days
rebuilding my laptop's system piece by piece,
and hated every minute of it.
______________________________________________________________
I now want to store images of my Win98 (laptop) and WinME (desktop) systems,
for later restoring when things go bad (as they inevitably do over time).
______________________________________________________________
I have plenty of room on the Linux disk (Mandrake) on my WinME desktop,
but no Linux on my already stretched Win98 laptop.
1) Can I tar & zip a whole Win image
from the desktop WinME disk,
store it on the Linux disk,
and hope I can restore it if the s#### hits the fan?
2) Can I hope to boot my laptop from a diskette or Demolinux CD,
with Ethernet PCcard driver, Win98 disk support, tar & zip apps
store the whole Win98 image on the desktop's Linux disk via Ethernet,
and hope I can do the reverse when the time comes?
This would be wonderful...
and I believe many Windows "enthusiasts"
may like to give it a try!
Any hint will be appreciated!

Hey,
I don't think you will have a prob. Try this.
Have boot disks for both the OS ready.
Boot using the Windows 98 disk and give the following commands:
A:\> fdisk /mbr
A:\> sys c:
Then your LI will go away, leaving you only with a single boot of Windows
98.
Then boot using the Linux boot disk and check if the lilo.conf file is
correct. Once you find it ok, just rewrite lilo using the /sbin/lilo
command. Before writing back lilo, you may want to check that the Other
section is properly written in the lilo.conf file.
Else why don't you ditch lilo after restoring your Windows 98 boot? You
could use loadlin to boot into linux. That way, you don't have to bother
about the boot records.
All should be fine. Let me know how this helps.

Hi,
I'm using Looplinux (ie looplinux file on win partition, with slackware

I'm having problems mounting floppies and cdroms, it says I need to be
superuser to mount. I've tried the KDE desktop links to the floopy & cdrom,
and programs like Kwikdisk, and also on the console, but they all give this
message. My fstab file looks like this:

Also, I'm having some problems with KDE itself. One is that the child panel
doesnt preserve its icons (after I log out and log back in) and also, in
dialog boxes, when I list a directory in detailed view, and I press on
Modified (for example) to see it sorted according to the date the files were
modified, the dialog box wont sort them.
Any help is appreciated.
P.S. I am using the latest KDE (installed from the latest Slackware
packages, a few days ago).
Thanx.

I have some files their name contain the ":" colon character like
myfile2001-05-15_09:30:00.txt
when I do scp command, I try
scp myfile2001-05-15_09\:30\:00.txt userid@remote_host:dir_path/
But the scp command in ssh 2.3 (in Redhat 6.2) doesn't recognized
the "\" character (back slash). I need "\" because file name contains
":"
which is part of scp command. In UNIX character "\" should treat next
character as part of filename (in this case is ":" colon).
Shall ssh 2.5 solved this bug? Thank you!

Subject: RedHat 7.1 install on a Sony Vaio PCG-C1XS Picturebook
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 13:01:11 GMT
I'm trying to install RedHat 7.1 on a Sony Vaio PCG-C1XS Picturebook.
This notebook has a USB Floopy and a PCMCIA Slot for a CD-ROM
I have visited many sites and have found tons of resources but I am still
having problems.
I decided to install Linux on the 3.3 D: Partition that came with default
Win98 installation on the laptop.
Steps I have taken:
1. Created a DOS/WIN98 Bootdisk w/ CD-ROM Drivers
2. Created a Linux Boot disk with the supplied pcmcia.img
3. I intended to do a http or ftp install from another machine on my
network.
Problems:
1. Upon boot I type boot: text
2. Linux begins to load, but then asks for my PCMCIA Driver Disk
Here is where I am stuck. It appears that the Boot Disk does not
support my PCMCIA NIC Cards
I have the following :
(1) perferred card : Dell (3Com) 10/100 LAN+56K Modem CardBus
model # 3CCFEM656
(2) second card : Dell (3Com) Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX
From the redhat HAL, it says that both of these cards will work
based on community support feedback
and I have found external references that support this.
What do I do next as I see it:
Option 1:
Perform a autoboot.bat dos install using the PCMCIA CD-ROM
The CD-ROM is an Archos miniCD with PC Card and USB Support
(http://www.archos.com/products/product_500005.html)
I'm sure if I used the autoboot process, if I can't start this in
text mode, I would have to use an external monitor. I see no problem
with this. After the install, I would then need to go back and add
support for the one of the two PCMCIA NIC cards listed
above.
Option 2: Buy a supported PCMCIA NIC that will be recognized during boot
and then continue with a FTP or HTTP install.
Question: When performing a FTP or HTTP install, are the
ISO required or can the CDs be copied to a directory
on the FTP/HTTP Server?
If I can copy the CDs, do I copy both CDs
into on directory or two (Redhat\Disk1 and Redhat\Disk2
Option 3. Blow away the Win98 installation completely. Repartition and
copy CD ( 1 or 2 ? or Both) to a separate partition
and then do a hard drive install.
Question: My assumption is that I will have to copy the
ISO images to the install partition. Correct?
Suggestions:
Are there any other options left for me to decide? Which of the three
options above are best?
Any feedback would be helpful.
TIA,
Darrell Fuller

Which is a legal filename, of course.

Why? Colons in filenames are legal in the shell.

>the "\" character (back slash). I need "\" because file name contains

But the colon character is carried properly in filename; escaping it
in the shell won't change the filename any. You can't fix scp's
problem with the filename by escaping the colon in the shell. All
you've done is instruct the shell to pass the colon as part of the
filename, and that seems to be something that scp doesn't like. You'll
have to fix or work-around scp.
A suggestion: since scp has problems with files that include colons in
the filename, change your filenames to exclude the colons.

Several weeks ago I faced the same problem. The reason for turning back to the
login-sreen was no available space in the /tmp-directory. I logged in on a
console and deleted manually all files and directories from the
/tmp-directory. After that simple procedure the system resumed working fine. I
hope you can overcome your problem as easy as I did.

That's silly! There is no need to escape the ":". You are escaping it
to the SHELL, not to the scp.

I am FED UP explaining to people who ought to know better it that the

And it DOES (except that you mean "argument", not "filename").

The problem is that the raq is designed to ONLY restore across a net

Any help or suggestions? What is the meaning of this numbers?

A linux solution is much cheaper for them.

Would I need procmail if for example, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wants to mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Since the two users have email accounts locally the mail
should be delivered locally and not sent out to the ISP. On the other hand,
if [EMAIL PROTECTED] mails [EMAIL PROTECTED], then the email would be sent
out through the ISP.

That's an option that I was going to suggest, but I'm not sure that they
will go for it.

I'll need to check into this...

Is Suspend-to-RAM (STR) supported on Linux? If it is would appreciate pointers
to the docs.
Thanks.

Sounds like a nice system. I just went to a new system also which serves
pretty nicely. My main criterion these days is cheaper, better, non-intel.
Probably in that order :). So, my new dream system is a Athlon Thunderbird
1g, 384mb of memory, twin 40g ide drives which I rev up with hdparm, a
GeForce 2mx card with X4.0.3 and the nvidia drivers, and my preferred
distro: debian unstable. I also found out that moving to a 2.4 kernel seems
to make a difference for the athlon chips. I got a lot of sig11's under 2.2
with any version of X. Those are now gone completely with 2.4.4. I also
pick the athlon/duron compile options.
At work, we have a dualie amd box. Gonna check it out today. I actually
bought a duplicate system from the same vendor because they make really nice
barebones AMD systems and cheaply. This one is gonna be a work box. When I
compared the price points for intel versus amd, very enlightening. I think
the AMD stuff kicks intel's butt around the room a few times in a lot of
areas.
