For awhile I was getting a similar problem while trying to upgrade my
kernel. After pulling out most of my hair, I found out it was a issue with
Linux, not supporting my hard drive controller.
I dont know I guess that' for the what it's worth....

I just bought Red Hat 7.0 and would like to upgrade to KDE 2.0.1. I
downloaded all the files from their ftp server for it... Just have a
few questions:
1. It complains about dependencies.. how do i fix?
2. I force the install, and some of the menu icons are bigger than the
others. How do i fix it?
3. KDE is the default desktop on my system. How do i fix the login
screen because it looks messed up? (some of the graphics arent there)

I believe it shoold be "Xconfigurator" or you can use "XF86Setup" too.
Please note, caption does make a difference.

You can change the mode after you run the "Xconfigurator".

Subject: Help!! Partitioning
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 03:54:20 GMT
Hi,
Recently I have bought a HP pavilon computer. It has a 20gb hard drive
with a single partition in it. Windows millenium edition was loaded in
that. I wanted to add linux also. I bought the standard red hat linux
os and i tried to install it. Since i had some experience with
partitioning earlier, i went ahead and chose to do partition using
fdisk. I made one partion of size 128mb for swap (/dev/hda1), one
partition for native linux (/dev/hda2) and one partition for windows.
There was plenty of space left over. When i finished installing it, i
was not able to boot any of the operating systems ( I made sure that i
had given the correct choice for installing lilo on master boot
record). I encountered a couple of problems -
1) The linux software supplied by redhat comes with a floppy and a cd.
When i tried to install from the cd, the size of the work station
installation was around 1400MB. Even though i had more than that space
on the linux native partition, there was an error message saying that
there was no enough disk space. I had to exit and once i rebooted, it
showed a message
"system disk failure, insert disk and then press enter when ready"..
not knowing what to do, i inserted the floppy that came along with the
package and inserted it into the drive. The boot image got loaded and
it asked where it can find the software..i gave the choice cdrom and it
started again. With the same partitions, i tried installing workstation
again, but this time, it showed that the total space required is around
840MB and installed it fully. Once i rebooted, the same message as
shown above appeared again, but i was able to boot with the boot floppy
i had prepared. Giving up again, this time, i created just one
partition os size 4gb of type win95 fat32 and then recovered my earlier
windows using the backup and then tried to install again. This time, i
left the partitioning job to the software ( automatically partition and
erase). It worked out fine and i am now able to boot both oses.
Qn: 1) Can somebody explain why all these happened ?
2) Right now i have only one partition for windows and the rest of
the space is occupied by linux. I want to add a few more partitions to
windows by taking away some space from linux. How should i go about
doing it ? (Later i want to mount these partitions also so that i can
access the windows data from linux).
3) I heard that if we use separate partitions for /home
and /usr/local, if we run into some trouble in the future, the software
can be updated/reinstalled without disturbing the /home and /usr/local
partitions. Is this true ? If so how should the partitioning be done ?
4) How many extended partitions can we have and can the extended
partitions be of two types (one linux and one windows).
Somebody please help me out.
Thanks a lot for your time,

I'm not sure what you mean by "d: drive". That's a DOS thing, not
Linux.
(Unless you're using one of those kluge things that puts Linux in a DOS
file system.
The message you're getting basically says that the "root filesystem",
i.e.,
the linux installation is not located where the kernel thinks it is.
There
are several mistakes that could possibly cause this, but not knowing
exactly
how you installed, what distribution, etc., one could only make guesses.
Perhaps if you describe what kind of install you did, and how you
answered
some of the install questions... You probably ought to start over, and
keep
track of such things this time.

Are you using a "real ksh"? The above does work on a genuine ksh.
Perhaps
you're actually using pdksh, and perhaps it doesn't have a "print"
command.
If this is the case, then perhaps you should download a genuine ksh for
Linux.

G'Day
I am having an aweful time trying to get a 3ware 6200 working with RH
6.2 It is a MSI K7T pro 2 board with 2 segate atat 66 7200 baracuda 2
drives, the es 6200 and an Athlong thunderbird 800. 128 mb 133 FSB ram.
Now I follow all the instructions and the system will not boot off the
array. I curently have a ATAPI CD drive as master on channel 1 for
intalling the system (As NFS install was stuffing up) and I will remove
this cd drive once the OS is up.
I had similar problems with a compaq proliant and a smart 2 controller.
That is one, can install the OS and go through all the options, but come
the first boot post install, the kernel panics as it can't moutn the
root FS.
The root FS is obviously where the 3ware driver module is - so it can't
load the module, so can't access the root FS, so can't load the
module.... chicken and egg.
This was solved by hitting ALT F2 just before the final reboot (On the
compaq) and doing a kernel recompile and installing the new kernel.
I tried that with RH 6.2 and the escalade using a new frsh 2.2.18
download. As 2.2.15 was uspposed to have the 3ware driver included and
RH 6.2 uses 2.2.14.
I check that the driver was there in the source tree - it was. I did a
make menuconfig but I could not find the controller listed anywhere to
select an * and make it compiled into the kernel.
I tried to edit the makefile in the scsi dir - but as I know nothign
about make files (I assumed the optin to compile or not or a module or
into the kernel was set in there??) and the sane problem persists.
I downlaod the new manual off the 3ware site and still it says the smae
things. Just select expert... blah, blah, blah...... select drivers,
etc...
What did you do special? What am I missing? What can I try??? How
come I can't get this damm thing to work when I follow the instructions
to the tee? Must the driver be compiled in? Or is it OK as a loadable
module?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Richard.

Find the dependencies that the program needs and install them. Most can be
found as RPM's on red hats site

probably because of the missing dependencies, once you install the proper
programs that should fix it

P.S. Or you could just upgrade to the latest version of Red Hat or
mandrake, kde 2 is installed by default in each one.

This doesn't sound like a "distribution dependent" problem... they all
basically
use the same kernel (although precooked configurations may vary).
In general, you don't have to "remove" an old distribution, because the
installer
of the new distribution will remake (read "reformat") the root
filesystem, thus
removing the old for you. (Some installers do have an option to skip
the formatting
operation... bad idea.)
On the other hand, I seem to recall that Corel did not want to install
into an
existing partition, but insisted on creating its own. And if you delete
a partition
and recreate it, you're liable to get new partition numbering if there's
something else on the disk. Which is why I never installed Corel.
PS: I have Linux running on a K6/2 3D machine. But my video card
doesn't use system
memory. The problem you may be having may be related to your video
card...

I don't know if knowing what's in the boot disks would help, but you
could try looking at the bootdisk howto. I think the diskettes from the
major distributions are somewhat more complex than this, but it is
basically just a set of the minimum files needed to run something
intelligent.
As for you booting problem, it would help to know if the messages you
refer to are from the kernel, and if it is during kernel startup, or
startup of some of the system services.
I would recommend trying to start in single-user mode to see if the
problem is different. If you are using LILO, you can type "linux
single", or something similar to that. Then post more information about
the actual error messages, and when they appear.
