Or you could use GRUB, which works very well, and doesn't depend on LILO -
or hard blocks/sectors - at all.
GRUB looks like the choice of the GNU generation...

I installed RH 7.1, told it to install just about everything except things
like DNS server and news server, and was surprised when it was done that it
didn't have Tek. I thought that was pretty much a standard thing that every
Unix system should have.
Anyway, looked on the CD and found a bunch of RPMs with names starting with
"tetex" - but don't know in which order to install them. I thought there
was some option to RPM where you could give it a bunch of things to install
and it would figure out the dependencies and "do the right thing". Is there?
Also, when I tried to install the main package (tetex-1.7.something...), it
said that it depended on something called "dialog" (no version # or anything)
I have no idea what that is. Anyone?
As per the subject, I am hoping that there is a simpler way to get this done
than to have to install 20 some separate packages.

Uh, no.
Outlook still only runs on Windows and its brethren; it's a POP client,
which talks to a Linux-based POP *server*.

Search more than 10 news groups at one time:
http://www.computer-critters.com/myphpusenet/
Just enter a single key word and submit for maximum results.
While I am not the author of this excellent application I modified it to
work with PHP4 and increased it's search capability, am hosting it on
one of my corporate servers.
I have set it up to benefit Linux users.
History:
I've much enjoyed working and learning Linux specifically Mandrake. I
wanted to give something back to the GPL, GNU, OpenSource community.
April 13, 2001 I setup this application on my dev1 machine after a week
I moved it to my production machine. A month later I started capturing
news posts for many more news groups effectively doubling the size of
the database.
Yesterday, May 15, 2001 I opened the system up to allow searching on a
dozen news groups.
Comment:
There is an email address on the site to make requests or notify me of
problems.
I am always looking for LAMP work so if you know of anyone requiring
MySQL and PHP skills, and or hosting please reply to this email address.

I think too - but many normal desktop users (like the ones migrating
from M$-based products) don't. You have to choose the typesetting
package (or whatever it is called) to get it.

You mean automatically install requirements? Eh, I don't really know,
but I do not think so (I could read the manual, but I'm too hungry for
that :)

You have to install a lot of packages, but you can do it in one
command-line:
rpm -Uvh tetex<version>.rpm tetex-latex<version>.rpm [...] req1.rpm req2.rpm [...]

Subject: NS Mail Notifier Continually Asks for Password...
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 13:04:57 -0700
Howdy,
I'm currently set up a new RedHat 7.1 server with sendmail, smtp,
(s)pop3, (s)imap, etc. to replace an older system running
Mandrake. Everything seems to work just fine using Netscape
Messenger on Windows 98 client. However, I'm having trouble with
the NS Mail Notifier continually asking for my password, even
though NS Messanger is set to remember password. NS Notifier
works just fine with POP on same 7.1 server. I've determined
that the the notifier under IMAP is getting authenticated
properly, via server maillog/tcpdump/etc..., but as soon as you
enter the password it imediately comes right back and asks for it
again. I'm wondering anyone knows of an incomatability between
imap-2000-9 running on Linux and the NS Mail Notifier installed
with NS Communicator 4.77? If so is there a work around other
than using a third party mail notifier?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm sure that my response isn't going to be too awful helpful. I
didn't notice any glaring errors, my biggest thought is that perhaps APM
is the culprit. I could probably do better if I were sitting in front
of the machine, but it's tough from here. <sigh> good luck, I wish I

hrm.... wierd.... you might try looking in your /var/log/messages to see
if there is anything there that might imply some problems. Also, you
might try looking to see if there are any open bugs in X that could give
you some clue. If you're not running the latest kernel, you should try
that too.

The redhat binaries were compiled with:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-add-ons=yes --without-cvs --enable-kernel=2.4.0
The last one of course only if you run kernel 2.4. Also add some nice
optimizations...

pwconv
pwconv creates shadow from passwd and an optionally existing shadow.

Thanks for the reply.
I will try your idea ASAP and let you know.
At present all files created form a Win box on the Linux server are created
750 with the gid bit set.
All files created in the same way are created 700 with the gid bit set.
Why don't my "force create mode =0770" and "force directory mode = 0765" in
smb.conf work?
What am I missing?
Can you suggest a book / website / howto etc which goes into the question
of permissions in detail?

Rob
