When LILO was in the MBR I had the exact same problem. With any selection of
O.S. LILO did not respond. Here below I posted my lilo.conf and partition
table for Eric who will look at it

This is the exact same problem I've had. Does anyone know why it does
this? I've been successful installing SuSe 6.3, RedHat 5.1 and RedHat
5.2. Mandrake hangs at the repartition point on mine just like
Steve's..... WHY?

I have found the problem on Mandrake's Support:
===================================
Error scenario: LILO and Grub ignores the enter key with Quebec keymap
When: During boot, after installation
Why: They keymap is incorrect for Quebec keyboards
Solution: Download this new keyboard map and save it in the /boot directory.
If you use LILO, execute /sbin/lilo to recreate the boot sector. Grub reads
the file dynamically, so if you use Grub you do not need to do anything
extra.

Isn't that something?

In XF86Config, leave only the section for 16 bpp mode, delete all others.
If you use XF86Config-4, just set the default mode to 16.

For all users change the files /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc.
For individual users change ~ID/.profile and ~ID/.bashrc. (~ID is the
home directory path for each user ID.)
The command you wan to add is:
export MAIL=$HOME/Maildir
don't use the dot here otherwise when you are in a directory other than
your home directory the mailer will look for mail in the directory you
are currently in.

Hi John!
The "NO DIALTONE" means that the modem picks up the line and tries to
listen for the buzz, as we humans do.
It happens that the tone is too quiet or wrong frequency, sometimes the
modem is too fast for the exchange and reports before the exchange made
the line active.
So edit the initialisation string of the modem and if it responds to
Rockwell commands insert X0, it means "do not check, just dial".
If your exchange is slow you may have to give it a waiting period before
dialing, this is done by inserting comma before the number to be dialed.
like this ",12345678". It gives 2 seconds before dialing.
Have fun.

Subject: Working with a small HD and a Jaz Drive
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 21:39:08 GMT
Linux Guru's:
I have recently installed Linux(Redhat 6.2) on an old machine at work(a
P133mhz w/96mbs of ram upgraded to P400mhz). Unfortunately, this
machine has a pretty small harddrive(only 1.2 GB), so I installed a Jaz
2GB drive. I would like to use this machine for experimentation and
development, so I am therefore badly in need of additional space. The
original hard drive layout obviously put everything on the systems
fixed hard drive(the root directory is 99% full). I plan on installing
the upgraded desktops from Gnome and KDE, in addition to ORACLE, Java,
etc.. I am afraid of the speed that I will encounter if I load all of
these things on the Jaz drive. Being a newbie, I am not exactly sure
how I should proceed. Any help with the following questions will be
appreciated:
1) Does it make any sense to clear room on the fixed hard drive for
stuff that is going to be accessed all of the time like Helix GNOME or
the newest KDE? If so then what should I move(I have included a
summary of my HD at the bottom of this message). In addition, how much
of a hassle will this actually be? Although, I think it would be a good
learning experience I don't want to spend a week and a half doing it.
2) Assuming that it does make sense to move the files that are not used
as much to the jaz drive. What steps do I actually need to take to
move the files then let the system know where to find them?
3) Am I better off just re-installing Linux from scratch and trying to
get the file system set up the way that I want it during the install
routine. I would like to avoid this, however, I am not keen on
spending a week(remember I am a newbie) to just get the files the way
that I would like them. I think there are more important things I can
learn once the system is up.
4) Is there any directory that I can probably do without that would
help me save a lot of space. I am afraid of just deleting stuff since
I plan on experimenting with this machine and don't want to delete
stuff that I will need later. I know this question is kind of broad
(since you don't know what I am likely to experiment with) but any
advice would help.

I read the other posts so far and agree with them. Please go to the Linux
Documentation Project and look at the information there. There are
installation guides and a VERY important and useful set of documents called
HOWTOs. Until you have read and partially digested the relevant
documentation you should not be asking for help on the news groups. G.

I recently changed from a Trident 9480? card to an
ATI Expert 98. This did wonders for my supported
colors under the Xserver. Now I even have 24-bit
color as an option.
If you still have lots of trouble, this may be the
easiest way out. Good Luck!

Well, you can, with a tiny bit more labour.
However, if you do
gs --help
It will list a long list of available devices.
See if those are already there. They are on the gs which comes with
Mandrake 7.1, so you could just try installing its rpm for gs.
(Just go to a Mandrake Mirror and get the gs from the rpm files in that
distribution)

Hi,
I tried this out. This works. I have one more problem. I need to switch
between different bpps to test my display program. I am sure it can be
done, but somehow this time luck is not in my favour. I want to use
startx -- -bpp xx to chose the bits per pixel.
Thanks for your help,

The resolution yes. Alt-ctrl-+ or atl-ctrl-- will do it. The colour
depth-- no.
You need to use startx -- -bpp ##
where ## is the colour depth
and make sure you have that colour depth defined in the
/etc/X11/XF86Config

You should have gone directly from tasksel into dselect.

Don't use dselect to install packages once you have finished the initial
install. Use apt-get: 'apt-get install foo' will install the package foo
and all its dependencies. console-apt and aptitude are text UI front-ends
for apt. gnome-apt is a GUI front-end for it.

If both disks are identical, say same model etc., then you can use
dd like this ...
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
... for instance but make sure not to make a typo .. now make sure
again ;)
If not, than you can do this to exclude certain directories for
instance ...
cd /
find . \( -path './mnt/*' -o -path './proc/*' \) -prune -o -print | \
cpio -pvd /mnt
...
The idea is to mount the second disk on /mnt, perhaps it might
look like this afterwards ...
/mnt/
/mnt/usr/
/mnt/home/
... and to copy all but /proc/* and /mnt/' over while letting
cpio create those directories too.
If you want to be able to boot from that second disk via a
kernel floppy for instance, then you need to edit one or some
some files afterwards but esp. /etc/fstab.
Cheers,
Juergen
