Subject: How to setup secure port (proxy) for Konqueror of Redhat 7.1?
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 02:11:53 GMT
Hi all,
I found the place to setup proxy for Konqueror on my PC Redhat 7.1 but it
doesn't have the setting for secure port as IE/Netscape Commucator.
So I have to stop to use Konqueror and use Netscape Communicator for
browsing internet instead of.
My PC Redhat is under proxy and firewall stuffs.
Thanks in advance for any advise.

I'm trying to install Linux on a laptop: 486, 8mB, 200MB with only a
floppydrive (and a parallel port or serial port).
1) Make boot floppy and root floppy
2) boot from floppy's
3) make root: fdisk, msfs: make harddisk partitions and filesystems
3) Howto copy root-filesystem (?) from other Linux system using
parallel or serial port ??
4) ??
Thanks,
Lars.

You must have APM support compiled into the kernel, and you must execute
the apm -s command as root. When I try this on my desktop (Abit KT7
board), the machine appears to go dead, but the power-supply, CPU, and
hard drive fans keep spinning. You can use hdparm to turn the IDE
drives off, but the power supply and CPU fans may be a little trickier.
What did you try, and what error messages did you get/what happened?

Well, given the lifetime of a card in terms of market share might be 6
months, and ATI seems to be thumbing their noses at anything but
winderz, there will no doubt be another, even greater, card that fits
this market niche by the time the driver coders can coax enough info out
of ATI to write a bare bones driver. But look at the utah leg on
sourceforge, they, or on Xig.com, either might have a working driver
before XFree86 gets around 'tuit'. Neither XFree86, nor Xig have
anything that works ATM.
I note with a certain amount of glee/trepidation, that Nvidia just
released new linux drivers for most of their current crop of cards, its
on freshmeat in today's listing.
I can't judge the Nvidia drivers as there are no local cards available,
and after my experience in doing email ordering 2 years ago, I druther
buy locally, where when they ask if I "want the warranty too", I can
reply that I'd always figured my bill of sale and my 357 were warranty
enough for me. :)
It may well be a fast card for the money, but for me, without any
windoze to run it with, its 4 oz of weight I could lose in favor of a
refund. That was cheerfully given, but I'm not sure I quite understand
Staples return policy. Instead of running it back thru the heat sealer
and selling it to the next windoze user, it was marked out, bad, and
will be smashed and disposed of, "to prevent some dumpster diver from
bringing it back in for a refund". For a windoze user, I have serious
doubts thre was anything wrong with that card as long as it was being
driven by their (ATI's) winderz driver.

Cheers, Gene

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.
You are very low on resources like memory and disk space.
Linux will run on a 486, but you need more RAM and more disk space.
Try to work on getting more memory first.
With Linux you will need to create a Primary Linux and a Swap Partition on
the disk to
run it decently. 200 MB won't cut it.

Yeah....
This has happened to me. I have had to power the machine down for a minute,
then restart the machine and login in text mode.
Once logged in as root I would run XF86Setup. Choose options
carefully and it should work.
Unless you have a "Fuhgazzy" video card..!!

Hi. On my web site I show how to patch the iBCS module, allowing Foxpro for

Question. I've heard there is no iBCS module in the 2.4 kernel. Is this
true? If so, what took over and where do I find the equivalent code?

You should maybe try a newer distrobution. Newer distro's = easier
installation. At least Mandrake 7.2 or as with your USB modem problem a
distro with the 2.4 kernel (SuSE, Redhat 7, Mandrake 8)

To me, its not even about sability. Its about technological curiosity and
not being under Microsofts yearly hundred dollar upgrade schedule and
having to upgrade my hardware everytime too!

Subject: Newbie question, where does lilo/grub reside?
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 07:37:40 +0400
I have installed LM8.0 double boot with my W2K. First partition is w2k
and second is linux. During the installation, when it asked me where I
want the lilo/grub to be written, I selected /dev/hda. I bought
recently another drive which I am thinking of installing linux and leave
my other drive for windows (only 3.8GB). I deleted the linux partition
(using partition magic 6.01) and resized my windows partition and reboot
my pc, I still get the graphical lilo/grub. I tried using the partition
magic rescue disk (fdisk utility) by typing fdisk /mbr but it didn't
help. I deleted, formatted the whole drive, installed w2k twice already
but I still get the same graphical lilo/grub thing. Any professional
advise how to remove it permanently and where does this lilo/grub
reside?
Thanks, Caroline

I don't think that Linux really cares if you use it or not. Linux is there
for the people who use Linux, not for everybody that wants to switch over
from Windows to become a ha><or. We'll miss you, hehe.

Actually there is hope - the gnome folks are
working on their messaging client called
"evolution", so you won't have to be stuck
with windows to use outlook-like features.
IIRC the kde krew is working on something
similar as well.

That's a long story, and the answer depends
on exactly what you have in mind for disk 2 -
Also, on whether any current data must be
preserved or whether you can go ahead and
do a fresh install.

Ok, I had a look at my system:
/home/wayne/.xcdroast/isoopt.cfg - created by the initial xcdroast setup (root).
osiheader.cfg - I don't have one of them!
Did you follow the xcdroast installation to the tee???
You must run xcdroast as root for the first time and go through all the
setup options, followed by save. This creates isoopt.cfg in the .xcdroast
directory (off your home).
1. Open terminal.
2. make yourself superuser.
3. xcdroast
4. go through all setup options on setup page
5. save setup & exit.
6. run xcdroast as a normal user.
Give it a go!

This is exactly what I want to do with a bunch of used but operating P100
machines. They have everything including NIC's and I want to put them

Please, some of the experts out there, could you spell this project out in
