Hmm...that's an interesting situation. In my case my linux box is
directly connected to the cable modem and is a router, masq gateway and
sendmail MTA. So messages get proper message IDs with the hostname
"xxx.ne.mediaone.net"
Something you can try: Check what the External IP on your linksys router
resolves to. You can put that name as one of the hostname in your
/etc/hosts file on your valinux-system. Again, this is just a
workaround!

ok, looks like your hostname/domain configuration is not correct.
Assuming you don't have a "real" domain, you can use "localdomain" as
the default domain and sendmail will be happier.
Make sure you /etc/hosts looks like:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
x.x.x.x valinux-system valinux-system.localdomain
Hope this helps!

Hi!!
I do not know why, but after a long period without any pb, I rebooted my
Linux PC and KDE did not start. Instead of my coloured Screen with the
invite box login/pwd, I have the black screen with the giant pingouin,
asking for login and pwd, but I can only run with the command line, no
more graphical interface.
When booting, I got the following messages:
shutting down XFont server: FAILED
Starting Kheader A mySQLd process already exists
cat: write error: No space left on device.
I tried to start with xstart. I got a whole bunch of messages, to sum
up; Can't connect to Xserver. I tried to start KDE, with the kde command
line: it tried to start but failed. Except this, the whole system works
(FTP, web, mail, ldap, fetchmail...). I am absolute beginner with this.
Any clue?
Thanks
Fred

My understanding of ntp(d)/xntp(d) is that it *CANNOT* deal with time
that is further off than a given period -- I believe that period to be
one day.
The command "ntpdate" is used to make the "big jump" that ntp(d)/xntp(d)
cannot handle.
I'm not sure why you're worrying about this. Startup xntpd, let it
handle the time sync, and go on with life.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi,
I have a rather annoying problem :
I have a text file belonging to root which permissions are 644
I edit it with vi, insert some text, and type :w, it's refused (OK so far)
I type :w! and... the file is written !!
The worse is that the file now belongs to user !
Does anyone has got an idea of how this is possible and how to prevent it ?
(my linux is a RH 6.1)
Thank you for helping

Hello
I have a dual Xeon 550 machine that hangs often, somewhat randomly when
I'm doing some CPU intensive stuff. In the most recent crash, I was
heavily using only one CPU, It doesn't seem to be CPU temp related,
becuase just before it crashed, the temp was 45.5 deg. C. I'm running
RH 6.1, kernel 2.2.14 - configured pretty much the same way as another
dual 650 Pentium III which has no trouble. /var/log/messages contains
little helpful info. I am running all the same daemons as the 650.
Anyone know what's going on? In the meantime, I'm going to put 2.2.16
on there to see if that helps.

Why not just use APT? It is less picky than dselect (doesn't force suggests).
You were initially using tasksel to select the package groups before dselect.

Subject: What's System.map ?
Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 16:36:27 GMT
Hi,
I got a mandrake 7.0 v2 installed (kernel 2.2.14) and I uprgade to
kernel 2.4. There were no problems during make bzImage nor during make
modules.
as to make modules_install, i had to upgrade to a new modutils.rpm
version, because of an error saying : depmod -F : bad argument. When
upgraded, no more errors
appeared , but I had a big surprise after rebooting:
modules didn't work anymore. During boot , I got an very long list
saying for each module:
xxxxx.O: can't locate module xxxxxx
I tried a depmod -av as root, and i got the same list.
some shells commands (as top) also said : /boot/System.map has an
incorrect version
I also noticed something strange, but I'm sure it has something to do
with my problem:
here 's the begining of /var/log/message after reboot:
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslog: syslogd startup succeeded
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslog: klogd startup succeeded
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Symbol table has incorrect version
number. Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Cannot find map file.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: No module symbols loaded.
So what does that mean ?????
A new directory called 2.4.0-test10 has been created in /lib/module,
but it's empty... although I chose to build some stuff as modules (in
make menuconfig) . Well, I
forgot one thing: i used make menuconfig instead of make xconfig coz
xconfig reported some errors (Let's say it because kernel2.4.0 is a beta
release) .
So here 's my questions:
What's that file System.map, what is it used for ?
How does the kernel know that is has to look for modules in that or
that directory ?
How to update System.map file after compilation ?
Lastly, what is there to do after make modules_install in order to make
them work properly after reboot ?
ThanX for your help

OK, I have both Win2000 and Linux running on the same computer, and I am using
the 2000's boot loader for starting them. My "C:" drive (the one the system
boots) is NTFS. Suppose you have the Linux bootsector in a file called
bootsect.lin in C:\ . From within Linux (supposing that that partition is
mounted on /nt) you can rewrite the file without modifying any of the NTFS'
structures (which is the really dangerous thing when writing) like this:
dd if=/dev/myLinuxPartition of=/nt/bsect.lin bs=512 conv=notrunc count=1
If you don't like having rw access to NTFS, mount it readonly, but let ntfs.o
with read/write support, and remount it rw only when you update the file. It is
somehow tricky, but it works!

Those messages solved the problem. When i did what you told me to do, i
found that the -bpp option is no longer supported on RH7 and it has
been changed to -depth. That's it..
BTW what does 2>&1 mean ??

Subject: Winframe 1.7 through IPChains Masq Firewall
Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 17:30:52 GMT
I'm installing a Redhat 6.2 (16-3 kernel) IPChains firewall for a client with
Winframe 1.7. With the firewall in-between my WInframe client can't
communicate with the server: the client works fine with the firewall removed.
Server inside NIC FW outside NIC client
[192.168.1.6 ]--[192.168.1.7 192.168.0.2]---[192.168.0.69]
[255.255.255.0] [255.255.255.0 255.255.0.0] [255.255.0.0 ]
ipmasqadm portfw for 1494 server addr:
1495, 1604, 3389 TCP&UDP <==192.168.1.6
There are two problems:
1) When the firewall is in the way, the client begins by sending an ARP
request for the server address. When the ARP request fails no session is
initiated.
2) When the firewal is not in the way and everything works ,but communications
take place on port 3389, not the ports 1494 and 1604 as I've seen documented.
However, the ARP problem (problem 1) renders this concern moot as my client
never even tries to talk to the server.
I've got ports 1494, 1495 and 1604 open for TCP and UDP, but that's not doing
it. In fact what is happening is that my client never even starts trying to
communicate on those ports. Instead, it begins by broadcasting an ARP request
to the server address. If that gets no response (if the firewall is in place)
then I never connect.
If I remove the firewall and sniff the line everything works, but I see
communications to port 3389 on the Winframe server, not 1494 or 1604.
Opening up 3389 on the firewall doesn't work -- nothing works in fact --
because with the firewall in place the initial ARP request is never answered.
Can I get this to work without having to put static routes on all clients?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

There are two other drives with FAT32 and a bootable CDrom.
I can install and run linux up until I reboot and then LILO fails with LO on

I would be happy to boot with a floppy or be able to do the Linux equivalent

I'm not much of a unix person. I previously succeeded in getting RH6.1
installed with text mode and manual partitioning on a heap of drives and boards
salvaged off the dumpster dock. Then my boss told me to try 7.0 on a
previously fully functional NT40 box. After half a dozen reloads from orginal
Red Hat install CD's I finally get a clean boot...with mouse and video
functioning properly. I can ping anywhere in my domain. 'startx' runs and

Should I use fdisk to make a new dos partition then use partition magic to

would this work ? or do I need to fdisk all the hard drive and reinstall

It isn't. Just make a boot disk. Start the cd again, and choose setup,
