The way I like to do it is -if'n I want the next boot to be console only,
just edit /etc/inittab. The particular line that you want to change is
typically the first uncommented line and yours probably looks like this:
id:5:initdefault:
Simply change the 5 to a 3. On the next reboot, you won't go to run level
5, which is the "gui mode". Instead, you simply get the ever popular
console mode. After doing your thing, assuming that you want to start the
gui mode. You can type 'startx' or 'init 5'.
Running SuSE 7.1 myself....just bought it...pretty slick huh?

Just a follow-up. My own machine is configured to run only in text mode unless
I manually start xwindows (startx). This does not help Xconfigurator any.
Is there any process that runs in text mode once Xwindows and a windows manager is
are installed (but not started) that might interfere with Xconfigurator? Nothing
leaps
out when you list the processes (ps -ef) but maybe I'm missing it.

Hi Roger-
I think you have most of the pieces in place and you do not need the scsi
card to see an ide device to use it as a cd or a cdrw. The above output
shows that scsi emulation (ide-scsi) is working and finding the device
correctly to be used as a cdrw. If you could, show me the output of doing
an ls -l /dev/cdrom. I want to see what symlink cdrom is and what hardware
device it actually is using. Consider that you have basically turned off
ide cd support now and that the ide-scsi emulation layer that allows you to
use the cdrw stuff can also let you play audio cd's. If you link /dev/scd0
to /dev/cdrom symbolically you should be able to use a audio cd playing
program. I have an HP 9300 ide cdrw device and a adaptec 2940 u2w card
which allows me to use a zip drive and my tape backup. If I want to play
audio cd's on my HP ide/atapi cdrw, I keep things the way they are but I
ensure that the /dev/cdrom symbolink is actually linked to the device
/dev/scd0. Now if you start a cd playing utility it should play audio cd's.
You may need to change the permissions on /dev/scd0 to allow non-root users
to use the device.
Best regards! I like the name of that first operating system in your sig!
Been there, done that for many years.

Subject: Getting Kppp to work in Mandrake 8.0...
Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 02:02:20 +0200
I've spent two days trying to install Mandrake 8.0 off a magazine coverdisk (OK,
call me cheap!)...
The dosutils/autoboot/ directory was missing, and live update didn't work
correctly...
And I don't have a floppy drive and my cd-rom is not bootable!
Believe me, it was a lot of work.........
In the end, I've got most of what I want installed, but ran into problems with
Kppp.
[root@sheaf lib]# rpm -Uvh

See? Kppp still wont' work!
So, I erase these two packages, and go back to the Mandrake 7.2 versions:
[root@sheaf lib]# rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/kdelibs-2.0-5mdk.i586.rpm

And now, yippee!

Created link from "/home/klrhodes/.kde/socket-sheaf.sheffield" to

It Works!!
But why, oh why, is the version in Mandrake 8.0 (seemingly) broken?

The aha 1480 cardbus card is not compatiable to with the anatec datachute-pci.
Datachute-pci only supports 16 bit cards. The 1480 is a 32 bit card.
I will have to see if the Raytoc Systems CBS51U cardbus reader is compatable,
according their page it auto detects between cardbus and 16 bit cards. Looks
like it uses the RL5C478 chipset.

I don't think you're understanding my problem. Currently,
what I'm getting is:
----------------------------
LILO
GRAPHICAL
MENU
----------------------------
Welcome to my computer. This
is my lilo.message file.
I want to get rid of the big graphical menu that
lilo puts up, but I still want to keep the text that
is stored in my /etc/lilo.message file. If I comment
out the line you suggest, it doesn't display my
message at all, but it still displays the big graphical
menu.

What do you mean by "it"? Did you change the location? Re-untar the
sources? Are you talking about a different kernel? You need to be
precise.

I can't even build the alsa-drivers using their kernel as a base.
# cd /usr/bin
# mv gcc gcc-2.96
# ln -s kgcc gcc
Download the 2.4.4 kernel from ftp.kernel.org and configure and build it.
Copy System.map to /boot/System.map-2.4.4 and copy arch/i386/boot/bzImage
to /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.4. Edit /etc/lilo.conf, make RH's kernel label=old
add your new kernel as label=linux. Run lilo and reboot.
