I want to install Linux on my Windows ME machine, preferably some kind of
UMSDOS distribution on the same partition, but if I can't do that, how
should I go about doing it? What distribution should I use? Microsoft has
totally perverted the boot process, and it's nothing like it used to be.

Hi Jorik,
Thanks for your reply. The HDD is indeed a new one, however I will try this
anyway...

Subject: SMC Ultra problems and network performance
Date: 21 Dec 2000 22:24:22 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello:
I have a very strange situation involving Linux
on three machines using SMC Ultra 10 Megabit
cards.
Machine A has RH 6.2 installed
Machine B has RH 5.1 installed
Machine C has RH 6.0 installed.
Machine A is very unpredictable when
it comes to replying via the ping command.
A and B are adjacent on thinnet. C is a router
away, on TP.
When A pings B, there are occasional delays of up to
8 seconds, with a time-to-live of 64.
When B pings A, the typical delay is about 1+
milliseconds, with a time-to-live of 255.
When C pings A, the delay is as much as 14 seconds,
with a time-to-live of 254.
When A pings C, the delay is as much as 8 seconds,
with a time-to-live of 254.
When B pings C, the delay is as about 2 ms,
with a time-to-live of 254.
So the RH 5.1 machine consistently has ping times
of about 2 ms, while the RH 6.0 and RH 6.2 machines
do very much more poorly.
All machines are similarly configured:
A: RH 6.2,AMD 266Mhz, 64 MB, SMC Ultra, Master=HD,CDROM,Slave=HD,Zip
B: RH 5.1,Cyrix 233 Mhz, 64 MB, SMC Ultra, Master=HD, Slave=CDROM,Zip
C: RH 6.0,Pentium 700+ Mhz, 64 MB, SMC Ultra, Master=HD,
Slave=CDROM,Zip
So what happened between 5.1 and 6.0? Is there anything
I can do to get good network performance, other than
switching back to RH 5.1?
Thanks in advance
john slimick

Hi,
I have had your problem too and found an idot-proof method (ideal for me).
I changed my /boot back to ext2 and mounted it read-only. If you make a
reset, there will be no fsck on ro-partitions.
/dev/hdb1 /boot ext2 ro 1 2
Hope it helps

Is WinME a windows or NT based OS?? I've seen some windows based programs
that will allow you to browse ext2 filesystems. You could then copy your
kernel over to your WinME partition and then use loadlin to boot off of it.
Pain in the butt, but would prevent a reinstall of Linux.

The recent release of XFree86 4.0.2 mentions that it has added for

You can find old computers a lot of the time on ebay. I bought two nice and
old IBM Value Point 166 systems which I use for firewall services and a as a
regular house file and print server. IT also does wireless for me quite
well. My total cost for the first one was 55.00 or so. The second one I
got for about 60. They work great with debian linux.

i'm still waiting for mingo to come up with a 2.2.19[pre] patch. i want
to use raid across all four ide channels of an abit vp6, which has the
hpt370 controller (and hedrick's ide patch *still* isn't included in the
mainline kernel!) in addition to the via 694 chipset.
the two patches tend to stomp on each other unless you are *very*
careful about which versions you start with. whoever at mandrake managed
to combine them in their 2.2.1[6-7] kernel for mdk7.2 deserves applause.
i'm hoping the next raid patch happens soon - i'm seeing weird behavior
that could be the 694 chipset, or the drive, or a mobile rack .. and i'm
real curious to see how the latest world works.
(or perhaps it's just time to go with the flow and jump to 2.4?)

I'm not that familiar with citrix and firewalls, but you could install
a linux VPN between the client and the firewall. Probably more
hassle than it's worth though if you have other options.

I use a SCSI card only for my scaner. It's a Linux supported ADAPTEC

had to change IRQ and some other values.
Does anybody know how to do this ?
I would alos thank any other help about these card. I found nothing in

Thank Tim,
I saw the warning for Loadlin in WinME, because WinME does not support real DOS
mode which is required by loadlin. Have you tested loadlin in WinME? Does it
work?
If it DOES work, it's a definely a better way.

Subject: Middle mouse button on Digital Research Tech's mouse
Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 19:01:17 -0500
I have just installed Red Hat Linux 6.1. So far everything looks good
except that the middle mouse button isn't working. I have a Digital
Research Technology Universal 3-Button Serial-PS/2 Mouse. It is
connected through com2. It is working OK except that I've had to resort
to middle mouse button emulation to do things that require middle mouse
clicks.
During the install, the mouse was detected as a generic 2-button mouse
and I overrode that to a generic 3-button mouse. I was using a graphical
install and the mouse worked fine during the install until it came to
the point where it created the LILO disk. At that point the mouse no
longer worked. I was able to navigate using the keyboard to get it to
complete that. When I first booted Linux after the install it detected
new hardware, the mouse. At that point I took what it offered as far as
settings.
These are the contents of the config files that I can find that seem
appropriate:
/etc/sysconfig:
FULLNAME="Generic - 3 Button Mouse (serial)"
MOUSETYPE="Microsoft"
XEMU3="no"
XMOUSETYPE="Microsoft"
and the pointer section of /etc/X11/XF86Config:
# **********************************************************************
# Pointer section
# **********************************************************************
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "Microsoft"
Device "/dev/mouse"
# When using XQUEUE, comment out the above two lines, and uncomment
# the following line.
# Protocol "Xqueue"
# Baudrate and SampleRate are only for some Logitech mice
# BaudRate 9600
# SampleRate 150
# Emulate3Buttons is an option for 2-button Microsoft mice
# Emulate3Timeout is the timeout in milliseconds (default is 50ms)
Emulate3Buttons
Emulate3Timeout 100
# Buttons 3 Tried this, didn't work
# ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice
# ChordMiddle
EndSection
How can I get the middle mouse button to act like a middle mouse button?
Thanks

Have a look at the driver's source, read .c, file as there are
all possible arguments which can be passed via lilo or at the
kernel's boot prompt if required (e.g. when booting from a kernel
floppy).
