Either change the Makefile so CC=kgcc, or better yet, get from the
rawhide branch on redhat, the whole gcc-2.96-84 (or higher -number) koit
and kaboodle, this includes ANYTHING there with that same revision
number in its name.
It will make slightly bigger, faster code than kgcc. And spit out fewer
errors, but more important ones if there are any. Later code, like
2.4.4-ac11, and later versions of gcc are remarkably silent warnings
wise. The code is getting better, and so is the compiler, I've built 6
kernels with it in the last 18 hours checking for option effects.
Cheers, Gene

I was given advice to also add RESOLV_MODS="no" to the script noted above (as
well as the PEERDNS you mentioned). Didn't have to add the PAPNAME line, and
didn't have to do the chattr command, and it works no problem.

On the contrary, it has been my experience that changing the BIOS
settings from CHS to LBA has in fact resulted in a non-readable
hard disk until I repartitioned and re-formatted. YMMV.
Beware.
If one really wanted to try this, I'd suggest doing it on a
non-production machine first, or else back up *everything*
before you start.

I am in agreement with you about the non-suitability of 2.96, and have
posted info from the gcc site about how it wasn't supposed to be used
in any software distros; I got flamed over it, so I don't fight that
fight any more. Yes, Red Hat IMHO made a blunder bundling it with
its 7.0-and-above distros. One of the main reasons I'm still running
6.2, with suitable individual upgrades.

You might also want to check your routing tables to see if you
in fact have a route set up to your 192.168.1 network from the
Linux box... if it thinks it can't reach that network, it'll
give an error message. BTW, you didn't indicate if there are
any error messages listed on either machine.

Greets!
Trying to get friendly with Pan as a newsreader but I confused.
I can set some threads to being 'watched' but it doesn't seem like their
'bodies' are being downloaded.
What's the point of 'watch' if it doesn't fetch the 'watched' articles?
More importantly, how can I configure Pan so that it will suck in threads
I've marked without my having to do it manually?
The 'manual' doesn't yet seem to be on-line.
Thanks!

configurazione risulta abbastanza semplice. Il tutto si risolve nello
scaricare l'rp-pppoe e seguire i file README e HOW-TO CONNECT. Per comodit
riporto i passi fondamentali:
Supponendo di avere almeno una scheda di rete (eth0) riconosciuta dal
kernel, si dovr attivarla con il comando
# ifconfig eth0 up.
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:67:62:31:D4 ...
scompatta il sorgete tar.gz e digita
# ./go
all'interno della dir rp-pppoe/.
# adsl-setup
personalmente preferisco farlo a mano. Eseguita la configurazione si pu gi
provare la connessione:
# adsl-start

I beleive that now there is a new version of lilo available that supports
LBA mode, so you can boot partitions beyond the 1024 cylinder limit.

As others have pointed out, try using something other than disk druid. I
have seen disk druid create partitions that Linux could not boot off of and
cheerfully write them. Best thing to observe the hard disk and what linux
sees is a simple console tool like fdisk or cfdisk. Remember the 4 primary
partition rule per disk.

The script has found some problems with your installation!
Please read the FAQ and the README file and check the following:
- Did you change the gcc specs file (necessary after upgrading from
Linux libc5)?
- Are there any symbolic links of the form libXXX.so to old libraries?
Links like libm.so -> libm.so.5 (where libm.so.5 is an old library) are wrong,
libm.so should point to the newly installed glibc file - and there should be
only one such link (check e.g. /lib and /usr/lib)
You should restart this script from your build directory after you've
fixed all problems!
Btw. the script doesn't work if you're installing GNU libc not as your
primary library!

To aktually help you we need to know exactly what the
error are that you got and also what you use to configure
the kernel ie make config|xconfig|oldconfig|menuconfig.
Please disregard what the other posters have said about
changing gcc to kgcc. This is not necessary. I have compiled
and used many 2.4.x kernels with gcc-2.96 and have had
zero problems with this. As a matter of fact, I now have a
machine with XFS from CVS compiled with gcc-2.96 and it
works fine.

Only with fat modern distros. Something a few years old ought to work
OK. I have SuSE 5.2 on a similar spec machine for instance. Do a minimal
install, without X to start with. You can always add things later.

Corel can be a bit fussy about hardware. It's designed to be easy to
install but it achieves this by refraining from asking "difficult"
questions and making assumptions.
I suggest trying other distros e.g. Red Hat, Debian, SuSE or Mandrake.

I've found the best method on old machines is to use an old hard disk (it
doesn't have to be more than a few meg's) plugged in as a slave and set up
as a /boot partition. The advantages of this is that you can use ReiserFS,
non-bios SCSI cards and software RAID. You can also leave a few meg's free
for a swap partition, it cuts down on head thrashing when you run low on
memory.

Well - I've got the linksys lne100tx as well - not sure which version. It
uses the 'tulip' driver. Try "modprobe tulip" - I'm remoted into my
machine and the connection is slow, so can't really step through the entire
network setup process. As long as the tulip driver is either compiled into
the kernel or loaded as a module, the your card will work - network setup
is an entirely different thing - and a thing that should be posted to
comp.os.linux.networking?
Let me know how it turns out or if you need more help.
