Subject: Kernel Panic Error
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 01:18:06 +0100
Can anyone help with solving this problem please?
Hardware:
AMD K6/2 500
144MB RAM
Adaptec 2944UW (diff), 4 x HP C2490A hard drives (2GB each)
Adaptec 1542CP SCSI + Seagate 2.7GB drive (Card and drive now removed)
1 x 3Com EtherLink III 3C509 Combo card
1 x TNT2 video card.
IDE 40x CD-ROM
I finally installed Red Hat 6.2 last week after 4 failed attempts, all down
to having 2 SCSI adapters and the device order was being changed between
installation and boot. This meant the the device I thought was to be the
boot device, changed from sda to sde. Fixed that by re-partitioning and
removing the 1542CP card and attached hard drive.
Now after running OK for a few days, I put an extra 128MB memory module in
and it failed to boot, complaining that it could not open the swap
partition.
I've removed the extra module so back to where I was but no joy, but now get
the following at the end of the messages (there are various references to
RAID but I don't remember installing it as an option):
raid 5: measuring checksum speed
raid 5:MMX detected .....
.
.
scsi: 0 hosts
scsi: detected total
md.c:sizeof(mdp_super_t)=4096
Partition Check
RAMDISK:Compressed image found at block 0
autodetecting RAID Arrays
autorun...
...autorun DONE
VFS:Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
autodetecting RAID Arrays
autorun...
...autorun DONE
kmod:failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s-k block-major-8,errno=2
VFS:cannot open root device 08:21
Kernel Panic:VFS:unable to mount root fs on 08:21
I found some help suggesting a boot from the emergency floppy using "linux
rescue" but this seemed to boot from the floppy to start with then finished
from hard disk with the same errors.
Is there a way of trying to check out the partitions without going through
the install and removing/re-installing everything?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry about the binary and thanks for your response. The problem is
certainly more than just the generation of the core file. The menus and
toolbar do not start up and the poor fellow gets a blank screen. I will
look into the rcfiles and ask any further questions.

You can buy Mandrake, or any other linux for around $2 from most
vendors. The official linux distributions aren't really any better than
what you can get for near free.
The documention is included on the CD which you can then print out in
windows.

Hello,
I'm new to Apache and am stumped as to how to get the
http://my.compter.com/~user to refer to /home/user/www/index.html
I've set in srm.conf:
UserDir /home/*/www
In access.conf I've set
<Directory /home/*/www>
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from All
Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
order allow,deny
allow from all
</Directory>
Then I restarted the server with the command
apachectl restart
and received no warnings
Then I've written a short file for /home/user/index.html and changed the
permissions with
chmod 777 -R /home/user/www
When I try http://my.compter.com/~user
I'm given a page showing, "You are not authorized to view this page"
So what am I forgetting? I've read through the manual several times,
but can't seem to find the mistake in my work.
Thanks for your time,
Scott

Subject: configuring a pci modem....hmm?
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 00:30:10 GMT
hello.
I am one of the unlucky ones that is an owner of a pci modem.
i have read that it is now possible to set it up in Linux.
I have done the following in an attempt to configure it:
as root in the terminal I typed "setserial /dev/modem uart16550A port
0x1058 irq 9"
Went to file manager in the dir. /etc/rc.d in the file "local" I added
the following line at the bottom "setserial /dev/modem uart16550A port
0x1058 irq 9" then saved. Re-booted and the same old message the "sorry
the device is busy" came up when i went to querry the modem.
some more info:
modem is on com 2 (ttyS1...right?)
the modem shares the irq 9
the modem is a - Conexant
MDP 3880-w-modem (w for win I assume)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I assume you are sending your mail through your home system on a
portable or something while you are on the road. (or just playing around
from work <G>)
Add your email address to the /etc/mail/access file, and as the root
user in that directory do;
`make all` to build your .db files.
This will allow "you" to relay mail through your system from anywhere,
but nobody else can use it to relay spam to the rest of the world. The
format is;
name|host|domain|IP OK|RELAY|REJECT|"RFC821 error message"
example:
localhost RELAY
[EMAIL PROTECTED] RELAY
spammer REJECT
amspay.iglatin.pay 555: Death to spammers
[EMAIL PROTECTED] OK
There are more details and examples on sendmail.org and the sendmail
readme files.

Since you're talking 2.2.14-12, it sounds like you're using RedHat 6.2.
The agpgart code is indeed included in the kernel tree, but it's not
compiled in by default. As a matter of fact, there's a bug in the
kernel config stuff so you CAN'T configure it to compile without a
small fix. It has rolled off my drive by now, but since you're wanting
agpgart, you're using either utah-glx or dri. Go to the source.
Go to utah-glx.sourceforge.net, go to the message archives, and search
for "2.2.14-12" or "RedHat 6.2", or something like that. It's a rather
simple fix - (change a 'N' to 'M') I just forget exactly where it was.
Also on the utah-glx pages you can find out how to create /dev/agpgart
that you're asking about, below.

I just went thorugh something very similar, moving from an IDE drive that
was used for installation/configuration to a RAID array. You simply have to
enable the boot BIOS on the SCSI card, then put these lines in your
lilo.conf:
boot = /dev/sda # overwrite MBR of hdc
disk = /dev/sda # tell how hdc will look like:
bios = 0x80 # the bios will see it as first drive
Then, run "lilo", and you should be set.

When I use manual configuration, (i.e., without PnP) I use this
sequence:
insmod soundlow
insmod soundcore
insmod uart401
insmod sb
insmod mpu401
insmod opl3
and it seems to work. I am using a slightly different version of
SoundBlaster, the VibraX but I would guess that shouldn't make a lot
of difference in the sequence of the drivers.
Good luck.
