I had the same problem with RH 7 - which is weird because earlier versions
found the mouse ok.

I used the "expert" install mode to install RH and told it the mouse was a 2
button on COM1, etc.

I had to use the keyboard during install, but after the initial reboot, the
mouse worked fine.

It seems a silly thing for RH to have missed.

Subject: PCI -> USB converter card
Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000 07:22:55 GMT

I have an old Pentium 133, and I want to get a couple of USB ports
installed on it. A PCI card with USB ports on it is quite appealing to
me, but I'm just wondering if it will work with Linux. I have downloaded
the 2.2.18 kernel source, but on running 'make xconfig', I have been
unable to determine whether this kernel supports the PCI convertor
because there doesn't appear to be any specific driver for such a
device.

So, my question is, will the convertor card work and, if so, which
options in the kernel setup should I enable? Thanks in advance.

Kernel 2.4 which should be arriving any day (week?) now, should have full
USB support.
It would be possible to go online with a lot of programming using Kernel
2.4.
RH7.0 has limited USB support such as an USB mouse, but should accept kernel
2.4 easily when it is released.

USB support is not currently well developed in the Linux kernel. Not many USB
devices are supported except for keyboards and mice and that's if you've got
the proper kernel version....

but you are in luck

check out www.linux-usb.org

goto device support and look for your Alcatel SpeedTouch DSL modem. I just
showed you where to get the stuff and I do not make any guarantees of any
sort.

I lost my Red Hat Linux CD, and I can't get into Linux.
My laptop just boots into Win98. No LILO boot prompt
appears. So I need to boot up with a boot/rescue disk.
Can I make such a disk free off the Web somehow, or
do I need to buy another book with a RedHat CD in it?

If I need to buy a new book, will using a boot/rescue
disk made from a newer version of RedHat Linux not
work with my older (5.X) Linux version on my laptop?

Thank you,

xinetd comes with a perl script (xconv.pl) that can convert your
hosts.allow/deny files into
xinetd.conf format. Run it in your /etc directory and redirect
the output to xinetd.conf

Mount your other disk as, say, /backup, cd to / and then run

tar cf - .|(cd /backup; tar xvf -)

Unmount it afterward to keep anything else from writing on it.

the USB floppy drive will still work to boot files from b/c the BIOS
still supports it. That's how I booted with my laptop using the floppy
drive and then i installed Suse over NFS using a cdrom from another
computer since my sony laptop didn't come with a cdrom.

nope. i compiled 2.4.0-test5 on my laptop:
unpacked source to /usr/src/linux-2.4.0-test5
removed the old linux link
recreated it so that it links to the new kernel directory, instead of
2.2.13 kernel
make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage
moved the bzImage in ./arch/i386/boot to /boot/vmlinuz-new
moved /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot/System.map
added lines in lilo.conf for new kernel
ran /sbin/lilo
and rebooted, worked fine.

edit your /etc/resolve.conf file
this is where your DNS servers go

i don't recall the way it should be setup Exactly however something
similar to this may work w/o being exact:

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

of cousre you fill in the IPs of your ISP's dns servers and then save
that file and then try reloading your webpage in Netscape

you do not need to set a proxy server up if u are using an ISP, only if
u are on a LAN do u need to do that

I just installed Red Hat 7 with GNOME and I've noticed my screen size
is pretty small (maybe 640x480).
Is there a way to increase the screen size?
Thanks.

Use Ctrl-Alt-(keypad +) to toggle through available resolutions in order to
make it workable.

Then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and if it is there /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
Near the end of these files will be sections marked "Screen". Swap the
numbers around so your prefered resolutions are ahead of the less prefered
ones.

You didn't indicate whether you copied System.map over as well. The
kernel needs that file to resolve internal symbols (at least I think
it does).

An easier way to do this would be to leave your working kernel in
the /boot/ directory and use "make bzlilo" instead of "make bzImage".
This will do all the stuff you need to do as far as copying the
finished kernel to its destination. "make bzlilo" will copy the
new kernel to the root directory as well as the System.map file,
then run lilo, so before you do this, edit lilo.conf to include
a kernel file called "/vmlinuz" (note the leading slash). That's
what I've been doing here for years and it works like a charm.
