Subject: Installation failure on SCSI disk
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 11:48:25 +0200
Some help on the following will be greatly appreciated.
I attempted an install of Red Hat Linux 6.1 from a CD included in a book -
"Red Hat Linux Secrets, 3rd Edition" by Naba Barkakati. (1999) but the
installation stopped with the following error message after selecting the
"install type" form a graphical interface screen:
"An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new
filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."
The install was done from a MS-DOS prompt after re-starting the system from
Win95 in MS-DOS mode and executing AUTOBOOT.BAT from the CD.
The computer is a 486 DX4-100 with 32MB ram and a 2.1GB SCSI disk.
Under Win95 the SCSI controller used is Adaptec AHA-154x/AHA-164x/AHA1535
SCSI Host Adaptor which works fine. According to the book the Adaptec
AHA-154x controller is supported by the release of RedHat Linux on the CD
from which I am doing the installation but no mention is made of the other
controllers in the Win95 string. Also the installation program did not ask
me to select a SCSI controller.
The kernel message screen displayed the following messages:
(floppy etc)
.
.
<4> SCSI: 0 hosts
<4> SCSI: detected total.
<4> md, c: size of (mdp=super_t) = 4096.
<4> patition check:
<5> RAMDISK: compressed image found at block 0
<4> EXT2 = fs warning : checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended.
<4> VFS: Mounted root (ext 2 filesystem)

<4> hda: irq timeout : status = 0xd0 (busy)

<4> ATAPI device hda
<4> Error: Unit attention -- (Sense key=0x06)
<4> Power on, reset or bus device reset occurred -- (asc = 0x29, ascq =

Now the questions
1) Is this a SCSI problem or what? The CD-ROM drive is an ATAPI device
under Win95 (see last kernel messages) but the installation program neverthe
less used the CD-Rom.
2) Any solutions?
Thank You,
Hentie

Thanx! I did that (for root and my main username) and it works great!
I only have three users on my Mandrake 7.0 installation:
root created by installation program
mine created by installation program (@ my request)
schmoe created by linuxconf
None of these users have a mail box under /var/spool/mail/ (or anywhere
else for that matter). I followed your advice above and it works
beautifully. I knew it had to be simple. Thanks again!
Now I'll try to figure out why it's not created with each new user. =)

try the -t switch. The following worked on my system (mdk7.0, hp
deskjet 812) not 2 minutes ago:
bash$ man -t kill | lpr
For a postscript file:
bash$ man -t kill > killdoc.ps
I actually can't find how to get man to output a plain text file. If I
do the following:
bash$ man kill > killdoc.txt
I get an almost ASCII file, except for the occasional ^H; ok for viewing
`less`, but... Any suggestions?

I have W98 installed on a 6.4Gb FAT32 primary partition.
I'd like to dual boot it with Debian 2.1 installed on a 3Gb partition made
by using partition magic to shrink the 6.4Gb partiton to 3.4Gb and creating
a New 3Gb one. (I apologise for my drive/partition naming but its the only
way I know at the moment)
I'd like to use linux's Lilo as the boot manager.
If my motherboard will look past the 1024th cylinder for the boot image or
OS loader, does Lilo have to be below the 1024th cylinder?
If I create three primary partitions, one 400Mb, one 3Gb and another 3Gb and
put Lilo on the 400Mb one, W98 on one 3 and Debian on the other will the
win98 partition move to D:? Can I make it C: and hide the Lilo partition?
If none of this is possible and I nuke my hard-drive and create three fresh
partitons of 0.4, 3 and 3Gb as above and install W98 on D: (set as a primary
partition) Can I then install Debian on E: with Lilo on C: to choose between
98 and Debian at Startup. How do I do this please?
My other 'problem' regards software. I haven't got a clue about whats on
offer in linux but I know what I want to do. What would you reccommend for:
An Office Suite (WP, Spreadsheet, DB, Presentations, I'm told Staroffice so
that I can read my old MS stuff)
Bitmap, JPEG and GIF viewing, conversion, editing (Like Paint Shop Pro)
Web Browsing (Like IE/Netscape)
Email, Newsgroups (Like Sharkmail!)
PDF Viewing (Like Acrobat)
TWAIN capture (UMAX Astra 600P, Parallel Port)
2D/3D CAD (Preferably AutoCAD *.DXF compatible)
3D rendering proggie
CD Burning Software (Preferably as Idiot-Resistant as Adaptec Easy CD)
WAV, MP3, Realaudio Player/Converter (Similar to Realjukebox if possible)
Any Good Games (Transport Tycoon/ Railroad Tycoon/ Civilistaion/
Colonization/ Simcity style)
The Machine is a PII 266 w/64Mb Ram, U-33 6.4G HD, S3 Virge GX 4Mb and CDRW
which I cannot afford to upgrade so any software must run on this please!

Greetings,
I have a third computer I was going to partition into many hard drives
and run it as a server. I'm probably gonna run Win2k for now, but I wanted
to install a couple different flavors of Linux. I was told that Linux can
actually mess up one's hardware for windows, but I'm willing to risk it.
Which brings us to my question...
Anyone know where I can find good resources on running Windows AND
Linux on a machine? I could do a dual boot, with the other flavor(s) on
other logical drives. I installed the Linux that came with my machine when
I first set it up, and it sucked ass. I have RedHat, Caldera, and
Slackware handy, but I want to make sure I install them without messing up
my networks ability to access the net.
I'm really looking for Linux for dummies sort of resources. I missed
out on the whole DOS command line thing, and I need info on Linux that can
help me with that. I guess What I'm asking for in a nutshell is where do I
get beginner info for Linux? Except for the dual boot part, which I'm
willing to slog though any amount of jargon to get it right.
Thanks for any help,
J

See, I'm pissed because when we install an distro, any distro, we

course we go SLOW, so...
... I got a question. Wouldn't be better to install the desktop
environment after the distro (and install the distro without a desktop

My kickass 486/133 finally died on my, and I moved my hard into a new
system. The 486 was using an old aha1740, and the new one is using an
aha2940uw.
The disk contains my RH6.2 installation, and my thinking this should be
simple. I booted with a disk, chrooted, modified /etc/conf.modules and
lilo.conf, . Then I mounted my /boot fs and reran lilo. Did this work, of
course not. The system is still trying to load the 1740 module and directly
from /lib which is not where it is/was.
On this system / is on /dev/sda6 and /boot is on /dev/sda1 and my lilo.conf
looks like this:
boot = /dev/sda
timeout = 50
prompt
default = linux
vga = normal
read-only
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label = linux
initrd = /boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
root = /dev/sda6
I got a feeling that this is fine and that it's the initrd itself that is
invalid, but how do I go about regenerating it and getting it into place?
Thanks.

As I recall Red Hat 6.1 has an IRC deamon included in the server
install. Personally, I use Bahamut from http://bahamut.org
It is the same server used by Dalnet. You will have to follow the
readme files quite close, build the config files, and compile it on
your own machine. Only one or two small configuration changes are
necessary to run it on a small network.

intel pentium chipsets only cached 64meg because
intel knew that everyone would want 128meg next year;
ie buy a new motherboard.. planned obsolenscence.
And just last week I hit a problem where
intel boot agent wont boot a flash drive
where it will boot a regular hard disk;
the flash drive works in any computer which doesnt have
intel boot agent . of course this might be msi's fault and not intel's...
I just dont like having socket 7 turn into slot 1 then slot 2
then socket 370 .. just because they expect to make a larger profit that
way.

hi,
i have suse6.4 and my voodo3 2000 works fine with UT & Quake3. Yast however
always complains about failed dependencies. i assume the suse configuration is messed
up somewhat.
here's a few things you may want to check:
1- don't use "export MESA_GLX_FX="window"" with a voodoo board, they only support
fullscreen.
2- make sure your x-server runs a 16 bit color depth
3- the "mesasoft" package must not be installed.

This is not really true. You should be able to do a bare bones install
in almost any distro.

If you want a minimal, lean install, which is what you seem to want, then
possibly yes. Or better, if you really want "lean", don't even install
a desktop environment in the first place. Install fvwm2 possibly with
XFCE, or icewm or blackbox or something. KDE and GNOME both carry around
a lot of baggage. That's kind of the whole point of "desktop environments".
Most distributions will let you actually choose the packages individually,
or ( for example in Redhat's case ) choose clusters of dependency-complete
packages. And most of them will cover for you if you choose individual
packages but miss dependencies.

Lilo installs its boot loader in sector 0. The partitions that it boots
have to be contained below cylinder 1024, but this is usually 8.4 Gb, so
you should have no problem there.
> If I create three primary partitions, one 400Mb, one 3Gb and another 3Gb and

Lilo doesn't need 400Mb! It only needs sector 0! You may still want 2
linux partitions, however. Read the Debian installation documentation
about partitioning schemes, and see also the partition mini-howto,
http://www.ssc.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Partition.html.
Windows assigns drive letters according to the partitions it recognizes,
which doesn't include ext2 (linux) partitions. So your first Windows
partition will still be C:.
When you're partitioning, I recommend setting up exactly one primary and
one extended partition. Then put as many logical partitions as you want in
the extended partition. The reason is that Windows in principle can only
understand one primary and one extended partition per drive, and may act
bizarrely if you use another scheme. Make the primary partition VFAT, so
it will be C:. Some people also recommend that any other Windows
partitions come first in the extended partition. So for example, your
partition scheme might be:
partition type mount
1 primary/VFAT C:
2 extended
5 logical/VFAT D:
6 logical/ext2 /
7 logical/ext2 /usr
