I have a US Robotics /3Com Modem 5610 (compatable with Linux). And I am
having trouble configuring it. When I do lspci -v it finds it at IRQ-5, IO
ports at ec00. I don't know how to set the com ports for it.

My linux box is RH7.1, root is default to start using
KDE. I had a power outage recently and so my disk is
corrupted and I encountered the 'Run fsck Manually'
message. And so after some searching on the web I
tried running 'e2fsck -f /dev/hdaX' to the affected
partition. All is well I thought but after I boot up,
when I tried to login using root it does nothing, no
error message, no nothing, it just wouldn't start KDE
for some reason. I tried using Gnome with success,
but I don't want to use gnome I want KDE. Please
help!
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I have an ISDN external modem on serial port. It's a Zyxel Omninet D.
I've tried to set it up under RedHat 7.1.
I could connect to my ISP, but after, nothing happens. I don't have any web
access. No pages shown.
Is there any configuration I missed?
Thank you for some light.

Right, sorry, it is a DHCP server. So how, if possible, do I set things up
such that the LinkSys can give out ip addresses and the linux box act as
DNS to resolve the names. I have 2 W2K machines, an iMac, and the linux
box. I edit the /etc/hosts files by hand for all the machines and the iMac
is an island - the oddball...

You might want to pull the modem and set the jumpers to the IRQ
and Com port you need.

Just a follow-up question before I blab off to the Pan group.
The way Pan seems to work is that one can 'flag' headers for articles or
threads offline, go on line and then have the flagged articles downloaded,
right? This is on a group by group basis.
What one cannot do is, flag headers in diverse groups, go online and have
all of the flagged bits downloaded automatically and at once (instead of
going group by group and issuing a command manually). Is this correct?
On a different note (I should post this separately): sometimes I want to
halt sending a command to the server but invoking the 'taskmanager' is
sometimes ineffective or worse, crashes the application. I'm using Pan
0.9.6 in KDE-2.1.1. Maybe I'm not waiting long enough. Is this a known bug
or an artifact of not using gnome or something?
My regards,
F.

Subject: LILO and FAT32
Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 18:48:31 +0200
hi,
following situation : Debian Linux 2.2 on a 4GB SCSI drive, Win2k
Professional on a 20GB IDE drive.
The Linux drive is divided into /dev/sda1 (/boot) and /dev/sda2 (root); the
Win2k drive consists of two FAT32 partitions, /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2
Now I've set up LILO to boot either Linux (working) or Win2k (not working).
In /etc/lilo.conf I've created a label named 'win' with boot=/dev/hda1.
Now, when I try to boot 'win', the thing says : "NTLDR missing! Press any
key to restart". Might it be possible that
LILO can just boot FAT16 partitions?
I also tried the other way - boot Linux from the Win2k start menu. I copied
the /dev/sda1 bootsector into a file ("boot.lin"), put this one onto the C:
partition and appended ("C:\BOOT.LIN="Debian Linux") in BOOT.INI. Ok, now I
tried to boot with this
configuration and...LILO has nothing more to say than "LIL-"...
Ehm...anyone got an idea to fix this?
Thanks for any help!
Max

FWIW, Canadians can now legally copy copyrighted music, for their own
use. The copyright owners get reimbersed through a levy the government
slapped on blank CDs, audio cassettes etc.

You may also have a bad ISO or CDROM that doesn't like your ISO. I've

Make that three of us, cept I'm in a government enviroment and we get
PC's suplusd all the time... Cluster heaven....
We're looking at using Mosix, an alternative to beowulf. I believe it
has to be compiled into the kernel. We haven't had the time to sit down
and try this yet, though it is very high on our list of things to do ;)
In any case you'll likely have to install the linux first, then install
the cluster package and compile it into the kernel.
I know the newer distros have beowulf built in but I haven't taken the
time to read the docs... From what I understand, Beowulf requires your
applications to be SMP aware. Mosix doesn't....
You can see more about mosix here...
http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/mosix/
As well as a nice pic of their 72 processor cluster...

See if you can get the source rpm and re-compile.... otherwise, you have
just run into the problem with proprietary hardware drivers.... you will
have to downgrade your kernel to something far shittier and buggier.
I'd see if you can get a more secure 2.2.x kernel before I dropped all
the way to 2.4.0.... see if they have a 2.2.x driver out there.

This is what I would suggest as well. do a minimal install in a high
security mode on the linux distro you are most familiar with. make sure
you close all your ports, try nmaping it from an external location.

<chuckle> you've probably mis-configured something in there. I'd
suggest looking back over the config (make xconfig or make

you forgot to change the processor type off of pentium3 (the default) to

Booting with UMSDOS as root apparently isn't working yet with 2.4.

have you looked at line 561 of /etc/XF86Config?

Hello,
I'm not sure, if this works with ppp, it works with ippp.
You could change the script that setups your ppp like:
ifconfig ppp0 txqueuelen <number> ....
However, you can change it with ifconfig on the fly...:-)

it can boot fat16 just fine, as well as fat32.
Where is ur LILO installed? Its possible you overwrote ntldr with LILO
in that case the "ntldr missing' error is appropriate.
NTLDR is put into the MBR of ur booting drive and if u put LILO there
then NTLDR is no longer there.

After a painful upgrade to 8.0, I find that there's no mugshot for root on the
XMD screen...
How can I change the mughsot for a user, and add one for root?
