Hi all,

Trying to get kpilot working with rh 7.0. One- it didn't install with
a workstation install (anyone know what else I can look forward to,
xemacs didn't
either). two - I installed it by hand .. rpm -i kpilot... , but
/dev/pilot is
not created and kpilot will not start correctly. None of the pilot-link
software
is installed, but it is not on the second CD where kpilot is ..

Any ideas or suggestions ..

Thanks,

Jim

I sucessfully (I think) installed KDE 2.0.1 on Red Hat 7.0.  I have 2
problems:

1. Some of the icons in the K menu are bigger than others. How do I
force all icons in the menu to be the same size? (It just looks stupid
to have non-uniform sizes)

2. How do I get KPPP to run as a normal user? Everytime I want to
connect, I have to run it as root?

You can get Findpart at http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm do

findpart all fp.txt

and insert (not attach) the output into a follow-up to this message.
My offer to look at this is valid for 24 hours.

        In general, first thing to do is to install the java package(s)
then make sure that the (command) shell you are using finds the
essential
binaries, such as java and javac. At least RH7 comes with its own
version
of java tools (kaffe I think) which I needed to disable since they were
found from /usr/bin (?) and I installed the blackdown version in
/opt/java.

You can check what tools you have configured in the path by issuing
(e.g.)
"which java" or "which javac". If it replies with a path for either then
your shell finds the binaries and you can test what sort of java you
have
there by issuing "java -version". This is what I get with my blackdown
JDK2:

[timo@localhost timo]$ java -version
java version "1.3.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build
Blackdown-1.3.0-FCS)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build Blackdown-1.3.0-FCS, mixed mode)
[timo@localhost timo]$

If your shell does not find the java binaries then you should set your
PATH
variable so that it includes the directory for those binaries:
        1) first find out where you have the java binaries
                for example "find / -name java"
                mine replies with:
/opt/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/jre/bin/i386/native_threads/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/jre/bin/i386/green_threads/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/jre/bin/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin/i386/green_threads/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin/i386/native_threads/java
/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin/java
...

        2) test out with the shell by taking the directory component from
                the response of 1) and giving the following:
                "export PATH=$PATH:/opt/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin"
                where the java tool path is the last one (use yours, of course)

        3) test with "java -version" or "which java"

        4) modify the system settings to include this path, if you wish
                I did this by writing a couple of shell scripts into
                /etc/profile.d where bash automatically runs them for
                every shell (I think)...
/etc/profile.d/java.csh:
=========8<======
# java.csh

if ( "$?JAVA_INIT" == "" ) then
    JAVA_INIT="done"
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/java/jdk/bin
    export PATH
endif

export JAVA_INIT
=============8<=============
/etc/profile.d/java.sh:
===============8<=============
# java.sh

if [ -z "$JAVA_INIT" ] ; then
    JAVA_INIT="done"
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/java/jdk/bin
    export PATH
fi

export JAVA_INIT

I use xcdroast 0.98alpha8 as a user all the time. You have to configure

second (D:, 8 Go) is empty, and so is the third (E:, 8 Go). I choosed the

nothing happened after the warning dialog and a lot of minutes waiting !
Is there another way to fix the problem than using PartitionMagic ?
Is the DrakX expert mode so dangerous ?
Could anyone help me ?

try to make your cd drive bootable from your bios set-up and then run

Recently I installed Storm Linux. For configuration, it uses the
program "sas", which works on console and from X. When I try to run it
from X, I get the error message:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

This happens both when I started X as a mortal and as root, and from a
root shell and from an ordinary shell (sas itself requires you to login
as root anyway).

How can I get the X server to run this program?

Is it a file permissions problem from sas or a library?
        Note:
        tom@tompth:~$ ls -l `which sas`
        lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            3 Dec 24 11:45 /usr/bin/sas ->

        -rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       177532 Aug  8 12:23 /usr/bin/sal

Or do I have to wrestle with .Xauthority and xauth? (from the man page I
thought not, since it seems to deal with access from a remote host).

Yes you can. Install win98 on the first hard disk ( presumable
primary drive on the first IDE controller -- which will be known as hda
in linux ) then install your LINUX on your other hard disk. If using RH
7.0, select to install lilo in the nice installation GUI interface.
Select to install lilo on the hda MBR. Then when system comes up (for RH
7.0) you should see a nice little GUI RedHat interface.

BUT.... before you proceed, make a bootable win98 floppy disk. copy
fdisk.exe program into the bootable disk. In case something goes wrong,
you can always do the following command on a prompt.

a> fdisk /MBR

to get ride of lilo.

RedHat 7.0 's lilo do recognize FAT32 partition and is able to install
lilo with win98 installed in a FAT32 partition.

If you need to get ride of lilo, you will also need a bootdisk in the
floppy disk for linux to get back to linux. If not, bye bye linux... In
RedHat 7.0 you will use mkbootdisk command to create the boot disk.
Specific argument to the command depends on the kernel version that you
installed on your system. Do a man on the command and follow the
example.

Good luck....... you should get win98 and linux to dual boot. I even got
window 2000 profesional version, win98 and linux to boot on the same
machine using lilo.

[note crosspost; followups set]

Okay, it's been about four years since I had to install Linux. I would
desperately like this to work.

Brand spanking new Dell computer with an 80-GB drive. For some reason the
drive is on the secondary IDE controller. (Don't ask me, it just showed
up that way. I hate hardware and don't fsck with it unless I have to.)
The CD-ROM is also on the secondary IDE controller (as slave). There is
nothing on the first controller. That's all I've been able to figure out
from the BIOS.

The drive is in two partitions. Lose2000 is happily living on the first
8 gigs. The rest of the drive is empty, just begging for Linux.

The only Linux we're allowed to use here at work is Red Hat. So I pop the
RH7 CD in and boot. Something about a drive being correctly detected on
/dev/hdc flashes by at the speed of light, which is promising, but then that
screen goes away and gets replaced by either the GUI or the text installer,
depending on expert mode or not. Switching to the other consoles doesn't
help because they don't scroll backwards.

I can walk right through the choices until the "what kind of installation
do you want" screen, and then no matter what I choose (workstation, server,
custom), it prints "no valid devices were found on which to create new
filesystems," and reboots.

If somebody can offer hints as to what it's blowing its little brains out
on, I'd appreciate it.

Complication: in the /etc/ppp/options file it is demanded to keep the
"auth" option, which requires the peer to authorize itself with me.
That is silly since I call him myself; but anyway, the proper procedure
now is, to start pppd with (in my case) the option "call xs4all), where
"xs4all" refers to the options file /etc/ppp/peers/xs4all that is
allowed to contain the "noauth" option. There is also a chat script
(secret info remains SeCret):

/etc/chatscript/xs4all :
=========================================================================================
# This file was generated by dialupmod 1.0.
# Edit this file at your own risk.
# ispauth PAP
#
ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'NO
DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER'
'' 'ATZ '
OK-AT-OK ATM1L1
OK-AT-OK ATDT4229700
CONNECT \d\c
#'' ''
#'ogin:--ogin:' 'SeCret'
#'ssword:' SeCret
#'' ''
=========================================================================================

BTW, these file are created by the utilities "pppconfig" or the Storm
utility "sas".
It works, as is demonstrated by the fact that I can send you this;
however, I am required to start pppd by hand: `pppd call xs4all`.

1) What do I need to do to go on-line using kppp?

Another dirty issue: I now have continuous line activity:

/var/log/syslog :
=========================================================================================
...
Dec 26 23:25:09 tompth pppd[1760]: rcvd [CCP ConfNak id=0x69 < 11 05 00

Dec 26 23:25:09 tompth pppd[1760]: rcvd [CCP ConfNak id=0x6a < 11 05 00

Dec 26 23:25:09 tompth pppd[1760]: sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x6b]
Dec 26 23:25:09 tompth pppd[1760]: rcvd [CCP ConfNak id=0x6b < 11 05 00
01 03>]
Dec 26 23:25:09 tompth pppd[1760]: sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x6c]
... (etc., etc., ...)
=========================================================================================

2) How do I get pppd to shut up?

You will have to re-boot using a rescue system (rescue floppy; or a
bootable business card like Linuxcare has been handing out, and
something like that comes with RedHat 7.0 Server too). You can then
mount your / partition elsewhere.

I thought fsck does so by default.
