Subject: Kppp woes continue! Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display ":0.0"
Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 23:18:45 +0200

I just don't understand sometimes...Mandrake 8.0 is becoming a real headache.

Last night, Kppp was working (after a *lot* of struggle).
Today, it won't. Each time I try to run it, I get:
extension "RENDER" missing on display ":0.0".

And yet I haven't changed my X configuration! Any ideas why?

To fix things (how could I send this message if kppp won't work?), I tried the
following:

rpm --erase kdenetwork-2.0-1mdk
rpm --erase kdelibs-2.0-5mdk

rpm -ivh kdelibs-2.0-5mdk.i586.rpm
rpm -ivh kdenetwork-2.0-1mdk.i586.rpm

But that didn't work...

Hold on a second,
kppp --version
Qt: 2.3.0
KDE: 2.0pre
KPPP: 2.0.0

Could it be that kppp uses Qt, and it's Qt that tries to use the non-existent
RENDER extension?

I took a radical approach, wiping out all XFree*, Mesa*, *qt*, xinitrc and kde*,
then reinstalling from the 7.2 CD:
XFree, Mesa, Qt, xinitrc and kdelibs and kdenetwork.

Now, it seems to work! But for how long?

KR.

Can anyone recommend me a good newsreader, to be used under KDE2 in SuSe
7.1. Currently I use the Netscape reader but would like to try an
alternative.

Marc

Hmm... no experience with those cards myself, but the xfree86 site
turns up something interesting at:

<http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.2/i8105.html#5>

"In order to use most resolutions, it is necessary to install the
'agpgart.o' module. You will probably have to compile the module
yourself (see the notes in the module)."

I also saw a discussion where someone said that the i810 driver
requires dri support... so, I'd check to make sure I had agp
and possibly dri support for the kernel, and if not, recompile
the kernel with them and try again.

Hope that helps.

Hi there,

I am having problem installing video card
ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 Mb under RedHat 7.1

I use ASUS P4T motherboard with P4 1.7 Ghz CPU and
ViewSonic PS775 17" monitor.

During istallation from CD ROM the video card is
recognised as generic one. After I pick from the
list "ATI Rage FuryPRO AGP" card and my monitor,
X-configuration test just brings black screen, then
returns back to configuration page. After installation
is complete, I am not able to fire up X; screen blinks.

I also tried to skip X-configuration and configure
the system using Xconfigurator. It doesn't help either.

   Please help.

      Thanks, Andrei

i've run into this problem before when i was running redhat, but i forgot
how it was fixed. i'm pretty sure it has something to do with the
"xauthority" security this and that, which iirc, i had just completely
disabled before. i'm running a single user machine running no services,
so i'm not concerned about this security business, especially when it's
keeping me from even compiling my kernel. i'm running under x, trying to
make xconfig (i want to use xconfig, not menuconfig, etc etc) as root.
this is kernel version 2.2.4 i'm trying to get configured. a little help?
how can i get rid of this MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 business?

I just installed the cable modem based Internet connection from Comcast.
The Ethernet card I got from Comcast is a USB connection Comcast@Home's
EN1046 10/100 network adapter.
Comcast only offers support with Win2000. Since my PC also has Linux 6.2,
can someone tell me how to drive this network adapter by Linux?

For your convenience, the settings are attached below.

Thanks!

/etc/fstab doesn't affect lilo; it affects "mount". Perhaps you meant to
say
/etc/lilo.conf?

You will have to edit /etc/fstab in the transferred stuff, though, as
your
root partition will no longer live on the same device.

Ask a hacker to see if he can get in. At www.netcop.com you can scan via
their quickscan webpage or download scanner 2.0 onto a windows computer and
type the IP of the Linux box.

Read the FAQ very carefully and check out some of the other references that
are in it. There is a little section in there which talks about the
nntp.access file. Inside this file you can tell the system what username and
password to use for each individual user, server or whether you wish to allow
anyone to connect to your NNTP host.

BTW, cut down on the number of groups that you are mailing to. Using INN has
no relevance in the linux.redhat.rpm group nor half the other groups.

See ya

Hi!

I have to partition a disk on a laptop for work and I haven't done
that in a

crash.

Can I use fdisk to resize my primary windows partition?
Could somebody show me a typical fdisk command sequence to partition a

Will the 7.1 setup program take care not to reformat my windows
partition?

Thanks.

This is Red Hat 6.2 so it has an old lilo. Then there is a question:
does your linux root partition reside within first 8GB on your HDD?
(I assume large hard drive in LBA mode and separate root partition here, which
IS the way to do things correctly)

Hrm.... I don't have an /etc/rc.config, or anything in /etc with the
word "CONSOLE_MAGIC" in it, but I'll give it a guess....

I'd rotate through the 5 values that CONSOLE_MAGIC can be: "(B", ")B",
"(K", ")K", "".... see if one of them works. You can never be sure when
the person who designed it calls it magic. <chuckle> If that doesn't
work, then comment out the CONSOLE_MAGIC line and try once more. if it
_still_ doesn't work then I'd bitch up a storm and go switch to a better
distro.

does that mean that it's always caused by the screensaver?

it may be a problem with the openGL screen-savers. I suggest that you
change your 'xlock' call to something more specific like
'xlock -mode hop' and see if that helps.

otherwise, it might be APM, your power saving stuff. Try re-compiling
the kernel without that crap.

There shoudl be a graphical partitioning program in redhat 7.1 (I assume
that's what you're talking about), use that.

Hi,

I have Redhat 7.0 and now 7.1 installed on a laptop Vaio F630, AMD-K6
550 MHz, 128 Mb ram, etc...everything seems to be fine, but once a day
approximately the system freezes, very annoyingly! Nothing happens
anymore, I have to reboot, with all the disk check, etc.
Has anyone similar problems with laptop or K6 ???
