a patch against 2.4.0-test13-pre1 kernel has recently been made
available to add support for the G450 in matroxfb. thus it may be
present in the last 2.4.0 prerelease (I hope because I've also got
problems with that card, but I've not yet downloaded a recent kernel).
if this works you will be able to run XFree on top of matroxfb (with the
FBDev X server).

DNS shouldn't be the problem, it is probably a DHCP client configuration
problem.
DNS, Domain Name Service, is the means that computers use to make sense
of domain names. People use names, machines use numbers and DNS does the
translation. Most machines don't need to run DNS, it is a centralized
service, ie one machine can do DNS for a horde of other machines. DNS is
an integral part of the Internet, so your machine will need to point to
a DNS server, at least if you ever hope to reach www.yahoo.com rather
then always typing in 111.222.333.444.
DHCP is a means to dynamically assign and manage IP address and other
network connection information. Under DHCP a DNS server should be
assigned as well as an IP address and netmask.
You might want to look at your DHCP client software and make sure it's
configured properly.
If you are running DNS (look to see if named is running, or Bind is
installed) you can turn it off with:
chkconfig --level 12345 named off
This will prevent the service from starting when you boot the system.

I just installed RedHat 7, and used GNOME to do a 'programs -
system -
network configurator' to set up a new IP address and host name.
But when I 'ping' the address, I get 'network not reachable'.
Do I have to do something to add 'eth0' to the '/dev' directory
or something? How do I tell the system that the card is a 3c509
adapter? I've tried 'ifconfig' but it doesn't like my parm list.
I am completely new to linux setup and networking, I have no idea
where to start, and the manuals I have on hand are not helpful.
Any constructive comments would help.
Many thanks....Vic

No. eth0-3 are not normal devices.

(1) boot into DOS and run the 3c509 config utility to
- turn off PnP
- set the card's interrupt and address information.
The defaults should be OK
- select the network connection (BNC or RJ45)
(2) do a hard reset of the PC to lock the settyings into the card.
(3) reboot into Linux
(4) use linuxconf to specify host details (including IP address &
subnet) and eth0 settings. The driver is 3c509.o
(5) use vi to edit /etc/conf.modules. Combine the two lines that alias
eth0, removing all text in front of 'options' from the second line. In
other words, you should end up with one line that contains the whole
of the first line and the part of the second line starting with
' option'
(6) reboot Linux.
(7) eth0 should now initialise correctly
(8) set your /etc/hosts file or DNS to identify all computers on your
network, blah, blah...

Subject: intallation error when loading data into ramdisk
Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 18:15:06 +0100
Hello,
I am trying to get SuSE Linux 7.0 running on my ThinkPad 390E where
previously has been SuSE Linux 6,4 running without any problems.
The installations hangs while "Loading data into ramdisk" which comes
straight after the "Choose the source media", I am installing from CD.
Computer stops responding or doing anything.
The problem is actually described as "to be yet solved" on page 32 of SuSE
handbook that come with the installation.
Quote:
"For reasons which have yet to be clarified, problems can occur when loading
data to the RAM disk, and YaST then cannot be loaded. In such cases the
following remedy usually leads to a positive result:
In the linuxrc main menu select Settings -> Debug ( Expert ), there you
should set 'Force root image' to no. Return to the main menu and start the
installation again."
I have tried that but it didnt help. Neither I could find any news in the
SuSE support knowledge base.
Any hints?
Thank you very much

kgcc should be in /usr/bin/kgcc, and should be installed as part of the
RH7.0 installation process.
If not, install package kgcc-1.1.2-40, but it should already be in
place.

PMFJI on this thread, but I was thinking that if you are having a problem with
CD's burned with X-CD-Roast, then the problem is cdrecord, not that program
since it uses cdrecord.
Have you successfully burned CDs (same CD brand/manufacturer and capacity) by

Hi,
I have a strange problem: when I boot the system (Pentium 200 MHz, 64 MB
RAM, 9 GB Harddisk, RH 6.2, XFree 3.3.6) from floppy (I always do it
like this) it hangs after 'Entering run lever 5', then it says 'Kernel
panic'. When I warm boot the system using the reset button, 'kernel
panic' happens much sooner than that. When I use the reset-button again,
it checks the disks (they were uncleanly unmounted) and all goed fine.
The last time it happened, just 2 days ago, I had to run 'fsck
/dev/sda1' in single user mode. After reboot all was fine again. And now
this. Can somebody please tell what's happening and why?
Thanks.

JK - I am a total newbie myself, so take what I say with a grain of salt;
don't expect the modem to work, Linux is extremely poorly supported on
winmodems - which is what you have.
As to whether or not the video and audio will work, I have hopes myself
because I just got one of the PC Chips boards for Xmas. I expect it will -
at least with Caldera eDesktop 2.4 (which I also got), since the Sis 530
chipset is specifically listed on a screenshot in the install chapter.
Look around for an external modem; and if you go that route, you'll have to
get another serial port if yo uuse the PC Chips mobo, becaues it only has
one, and you have to plug your mouse in somewhere.
And if you disable the on-board sound to use your own soundcard, you also
disable the modem, whether you want to or not. - I can't speak for what
happens if you try to use another video card - I'm not there yet.
Best of luck,
Rob

The sound card and video card will require changes to configuration files.
You will (probably) also run into problems with newer IDE controllers at some
point.

Unless you built your own Kernel, there is no optimization done by
installation.

You would need to boot to the console and run one of the setup utilities to
change the X configuration.
Then when you wanted your sound card to work you would need to reconfigure it
with what ever method you used before.
More detailed answers depend on which distro you are using.

Yes, there is!
I did it with Windows NT4 and I assume its the same for Windows 2000.
Basically the NTLDR or 2000LDR will and can boot Linux
Anyway, first of all
1) Boot into Linux, Go to Yast and configure Lilo to boot from Root, select
OK and a script should run, wait til it has stopped.
2) Now look in your Linux Root directory for a file called 'linboot.img' or
something like that (Lilo image file).
assuming your Linux distro can read your windows partition, copy that file
over to your Windows partition, anywhere will do for now.
3)Shutdown Linux and Boot into Windows 2000. Insert the Lilo image file into
the WINNT directory, whatever it is in Windows 2000.
4) Next open up the Boot.ini file found in WINNT folder. (you will have to
change its attributes to enable you to save to it. In MSDOS type attrib
C:\boot.ini -s -r, or just right click on the icon and make sure read only
isn't selected.
5) Once you are in Boot.ini you will see a list of all the operating systems
that are installed.
Enter this information on the top line. Note that below is an example of my
Linux distro, you can change the label to your own liking.
C:\Linboot.img="SuSE Linux 6.4 / SuSE 7.0????"
6) Save Boot.ini.
7) If you want you can set Linux as the default OS to start, by going to
'Control Panel', 'System, 'Startup/Shutdown'.
As I said I have done this with Windows NT and Windows 2000 should be the
same principle.
I hope it helps

In /etc/inittab/ I believe the line is:

correctly)...that I changed. When the screen pops up saying:

it then pauses for a second and then says:

Hi Hung,
/etc/fstab entry for /dev/fd0 usually has the filesystem option
set to ext2.
Change the option to auto which will cause the mount command
to work with both ext2 and msdos or create another /dev/fd0
entry with the filesystem option msdos.
See man fstab for details.
