Hi,.
Are you unable to start the nfs server and export the directory on your
redhat server?
Or are you unable to do an nfs mount of the directory from the remote
machine 192.168.1.20?
It sounds like you may need to change your exports file to:
/usr/netstation 192.168.1.20(rw,no_root_squash)
On my Redhat 7.0 system I configure the /etc/exports file, similar to the
above. Then as root I start portmap with command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap
start" and this is OK. Then I start nfs with command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs
start" and this is OK.
>From the remote machine I am then able to mount the filesystem.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Redhat 7.0 boot image not working on ThinkPad 1161-41M
Date: 12 Jan 2001 09:56:30 +1100
I'm trying to get Redhat 7.0 installed on a ThinkPad i1200 1161-41M
and it's refusing to boot from the CD.
The helpful message is BOOT FAILED.
Next attempt was to use RAWRITE to install boot.img on a floppy and use
this to boot. Again, BOOT FAILED. I tried copying a few other images onto
floppy (eg pcmcia.img and bootnet.img) but same result. The BOOT FAILED
message appears in less than a second, so it's finding something it
doesn't like fairly early on.
I checked a few other things;
- The same problem occurs with the Redhat 6.2 CD, so it's not uniquely
a 7.0 thing.
- The boot.img floppy happily boots on my desktop, so it's not a problem
with the disk itself.
- The ThinkPad boots fine from an MS-DOS floppy and from an old SlackWare
LILO boot disk, so it's something about the Redhat boot image itself.
So, how should I go about installing Redhat on this laptop (dual-boot
with Windows ME)? Is there any other way to kick off the installation
process apart from booting?
I need a fairly quick turnaround on this, so if anyone has any advice
could they please send it by e-mail as well, since that's a fair bit
faster than our news feed.
Thanks.

I've got the modem working now, but I seem to have fucked up the X
server or something, the graphics and keyboard mapping are all fucked.
Can't enter my root to change anything :(

To check to see if this could be the problem:
cat /etc/sysconfig/clock
This will show you the clock file. If this could be causing the problem
it will probably look like the one shown.
ZONE="US/Central"
UTC=true
ARC=false
It should look similar to this with the correct country and timezone in
the first line. The second line tells Linux to assume the BIOS clock is
set to the UTC or GMT timezone. If this is what yours looks like then
you should change the UTC line to correct it as shown below.
vi /etc/sysconfig/clock
UTC=false
Be sure to save the change when done then reset the correct time.

First, never EVER use sax. Freaking nightmare. Always does things behind
your back.
For the keyboard and resolution, everything is in the /etc/X11/XF86Config
file. There's a keyboard section
where you should be able to modify your key mapping back to "us", and a
video device section where you should be able to modify your default
resolution.
I have no idea how to restore the old desktop manager under Suse. Probably
in a script file under /etc/X11, but I have no idea which one(if it helps,
it's called prefdm under redhat).
Of course, you need to be able to log in to do that. Assuming lilo expects
you to type in 'linux' to boot, type
'linux single'. This will boot without loading X, among other things.
Hope it helps

Hi,
KDM requires xdm to function. However, xdm is now a separate rpm. Once
you install xdm, everything should work right. In case you already have xdm
set up, make sure that when you call the ?dm from prefdm (which is called
from init [/etc/inittab]) has the right path - your .login, etc are not run
prior to calling prefdm.
Hope that helps,

I don't mean to sound stupid, but maybe you should just edit your httpd.conf
by hand? It's really well commented, so you should be able to spot errors
easily. My guess is that your apache host name is in conflict with your DNS
settings. Too tired to try and guess what the exact problem is, but look
into that.

Any time you unpack a tar file it is always recommended to do it in an
empty directory. On occasion you may unpack one that will not include a
directory to unpack into and will scatter all of the files through the
directory it was unpacked into. If you have a bunch of files in the
directory then they will be mixed in with the ones packaged in the tar
file. It can cause a big headache.

Van you can use your boot floppy to get in and remap the keys, if no
floppy you can try passing a message to the kernal through LILO: type in
what you want to boot, then 2such as: "linux 2" at the lilo prompt.Might
do the trick.

egcs and kgcc is actually the same thing.

They didn't. They sent out a distribution with a C compiler, that could
not compile the kernel. The kgcc solution is what I would call a hack - I
would really have preferred 2.95.2; the latest stable gcc, which I
installed myself.

Well, the redhat kernel has some features, the vanilla kernel does not
(like raid). But on a new installation, the first thing I do, is to
install a stable gcc (if the installed one is not) and then cpmpile a
custom kernel downloaded from kernel.org.

If your using a modem connection it can be due to a wrong initialization
string for the modem.

Does the system BIOS have a virus protection in it? If it does then
disable it until you get done with the install.

Thanks. I did a quick scan of the Suse support site and sure enough Sax2
buggers up your keyboard map, a 'bug' no less. Great. Anyway I did the
'linux single' at boot and it worked. I followed the instructions on the
website to go to /etc/X11/XF86Config and edit the keyboard mapping. It
looked ok, but there was another file X86Config.saxsave - and guess
what. All the graphics settings were 640*480 and the keyboard was set to
german! Er, what??? I never touched any keyboard settings. Anyway I
tried to edit it but I got a 'read only file system' error. I was logged
in as root, I'm a bit rusty with the old chmod commands, what do I do to
edit this file?
Thanks muchly,
Van der Ivor

Thanks. The 'linux single' did the trick. Now I'm getting a 'read only
filesystem' error when I try to edit the file, how do I use chmod or
whatever to change this? Apologies for the lack of any knowledge
whatsoever ;)
Thanks,
Cheers,
