(Note, I work on GCC and not Linux, so this is all IMHO, and not Red Hat's).

I've heard other people complain about the new aic7xxx driver, and the usual
problem seems to be the new Adaptec driver doesn't work on everybody's system.
I believe if you go into expert mode and select the other Adaptec driver (I
think you want aic7xxx.o instead of aic7xxx_mod.o), you can get past the
installation problem.

How do I configure my /etc/XFree86.config file so that it activates a
compose key that will modify letters and numerals? Generally, the
compose key is the ScrollLock key.

I haven't gone as far as you have, but run into a similar problem. Take
anything away from the kernel and recompile and works fine until the 'make
modules' part. Then I get errors. Trying to make a smaller kernel so can
make a bootable floppy, but not having any luck. If I figure it out I will
post it.

It usually does not matter who owns the main web directories or files, as
long as directories or CGI has 755 permission and other web accessible
files (html, images, etc.) have 644 permission. Whether you can restrict
it beyond that depends upon who apache runs as.

However, if you are running virtual hosts with CGI under suexec apache
option with specified user and group or /~username (public_html)
directories, then any CGI directories or files must be owned by the
username or specified user.

I've attempted to figure out how to get mutt to work so that I can just
snap off a quick mail--to beep myself in case somebody logs on, for
example--and while I already know how to trigger the command, the
command itself is proving to be a bit of a bitch.

I've tried doing xterm -e mutt -s 'subject' -i 'body' 'recipient' and
that doesn't work out, and from reading the manpage and looking at the
conf file for mutt, I'm fairly impressed by the non-user-friendlyness of
the thing... it's a little bit more complex than I would think it would
be.

Now, I'm not using sendmail to, well, send mail, I'm using a seperate
mailserver and Nutscrape to read my mail, typically, so I'll mention
that in case those make the mix a bit different. I don't need it to
note it in my sent mbox or anything, although that would be neat, I just
need a one-command (although I suppose multiple ones would work, just so
long as it doesn't require user input) way to chuck mail in the general
direction of one address.

Box is RH7.1, i386 architecture, but I sincerely doubt that'll make much
of a difference, but it's just FYI in case it actually does matter in
some arcane way.

OK, lets get this straight, SP2 for W2K does not really mess-up Samba, or
Linux, so much as restrict a few features for security control that Linux
and Samba need unless configured as applicable. The biggest issue is the
password as clear text issue. You should configure Linux (i.e Samba or
whatever) to not use such a unsecure method of interaction between W2K and
the network in general. Also, Linux and W2K support most of the same name
resolution methods with just a bit of configuration. The real exception is
NETBIOS, W2K still loves to use it, Linux does not have a clue unless you
know what you need to configure.

Apparently you both neglected to read the 2.4.x kernel config info for
SCSI emulation support:

In order to do this, say Y here and to "SCSI support" and "SCSI
generic support", below. You must then provide the kernel command
        line "hdx=scsi"

So it should be: append="hdc=scsi hdd=scsi"

However, it is also best to make sure that ATAPI cdrom support is NOT
built-in (it can be a module for alternate kernels). And the symlink
/dev/cdrom would need to be modified to point to the scd# device.

And in the future do 'su -' to become root with root's enviroment instead
of 'su'. You likely ran startx with the wrong environment and files in
/home/username ended up with root ownership.

You can buy a program that can run X in Windows, or get VNC for free,
which can run X from Windows, Windows from Linux, or either from any
Java capable web browser over tcp/ip network.

I have a duel booting system running Windows 98 and Red Hat 7 with two hard
disks, one solely for Windows (hda) and the other (hdc) has Linux and a
small Windows partition. Recently I have not been able to boot Linux
because of a kernel panic:

hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
hdc: read_intr: error=0x04 {DriveStatusError}

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 16:06

Also, Windows no longer recognizes the partition on hdc. I ran fdisk on hdc
and it showed the following:

I do not have much experience with this type of problem. Is it possible for
me to recover from this or at least retrieve some of my data from the

Linux? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My distribution is RedHat 7.1, and I used sendmail 8.9.3 that comes with

/usr/lib/sendmail -v [EMAIL PROTECTED] </dev/null

But I could't configure it to send mail using Outlook Express or Netscape as

the message somewhat similar to below:

Cannot send mail, SMTP server response: 550 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Relaying

I have add all entries in /etc/sendmail.cw all variations of my domains,

Could anyone tell me what configuration I have done was wrong?

I also use a 3Com Home Ethernet Gateway with a mixture of Linux, Windows 95
and Windows 98 in my home LAN. My printer is also an HP Laserjet 6L
connected to the printer port of the 3Com switch. All computers can print
with no problems. I used the CUPS web interface to setup the printer. It
must be set up as a remote Unix print queue. Queue name is lp. There is
no need to manually edit the printcap file.

I suggest you do the following (using the web cups interface.

1. Connect to CUPS at http://localhost:631.
2. Click on Printers at the top banner.
3. Select Add Printer.
4. Login as root and enter the root password.
5. Fill in the printer name, location and description (your own choices).
6. For device, select LPD/LPR Host or Printer.
7. For device URI enter: lpd://192.168.2.1/lp
8. For make select HP.
9. For model select HP LaserJet6L, Foomatic+ljet4(en).
10. That's it. Click on the printer name link and you can print a test
page. Good luck!

By the way, my Linux box runs on Linux-Mandrake 7.2. At work I have
Linux-Mandrake 8.0 and it prints to the LAN printer (HP LajserJet 4050N
running as a postscript printer) using Internet Printing Protocol also
setup using CUPS.

Thats probably because you dont start out with the default kernel
configuration
for your distro. Get the config file for your distro and start from
there.
