Sound like you have a built in audio card conflicting with your Sound
Blaster Live.
Go into your BIOS and disable your audio card.

Hi!
When my System (SUSE 6.2) is running for some time (e.g. 1 day or longer :))
and i add a new user with yast, i can't immediatly login with that user.
instead i have to reboot first. now, i don't want to reboot every time i add
a new user.
Thanks

Strange that it does not autodetect; it usually does with PCI chips.

Perhaps you will need to start in expert mode and choose manually to use
the dmfe module. It can also be called dmfe_rh61 for RedHat 6.1.

OK Thanks I did that and that was the problem. No I find that Redhat
doesn't support the SB Live card.

Options that are unaccessable during configuration are so because they are
experimental (i.e. they are not considered stable). If you really want to
use an experimental option, then you need to change the code maturity
level during configuration. Check the 'help' under the 'Code Maturity
Level Options' menu in xconfig for more details.

Good luck!

try using the Xconfigurator command you can set you card and monitor from
there you may also be able to set your screen size and resolution. Also try
going into xwin and seeing if you can find a proporties box and see if that
does you any good. Good luck Matt Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm a (very) old hand at UNIX but new to Linux and I'm trying to add a
driver to the kernel following instructions from the manufacturer.

For my first 2 attempts things went wrong, so I reinstalled Linux from
scratch each time.

On the third attempt, I followed the instructions at
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-6.2-Manual/ref-guide/s1-sysadmin-build-kernel.html
but it still didn't work and now's the time to ask for help!

Forget the new driver for the moment, I'm just trying to build a kernel
that's identical to the distribution as a known and stable starting
point. I've followed the instructions very carefully, using the "make
oldconfig" option.

The kernel boots but reports the following error:

     Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.16-3rr1/misc/emu10k1.o

I don't care about this driver, but why can't I get a kernel that's the
same as the distribution?

What have I missed?

Thanks for any help!

Read the documentation, perhaps? You need to enable another couple of
options to get joystick support working. "Input core support" and
"Joystick Support" under that need to be Y or M, then the Character
Devices->ns558 gameports option needs to be selected. Make sure you
also enable support for the specific joystick model you have, and take
note of the name changes/module loading order differences. Funny, when
I ran "make menuconfig", there was a screen somewhere that told me what
I needed to do about that.

Some typos seem to have crept into the documentation as well. Joysticks
have major number 15, not 13 as several places in the docs say! (Info
from /usr/src/linux-2.4.0/include/linux/major.h )

Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 05:30:46 GMT

I just bought a second hard drive (SEAGATE X15, 18GB). I installed it
into computer, no problem. It is a SCSI drive. The adaptec BIOS sees
drive during boot up. But, when the linux OS is ready to boot, it just
stops after the kernel is loaded. It doesn't even start the boot up
process.

I know that Lilo is working at some level because I can startup windows
which is stored on a 2nd partition on the bootup hard drive. Furthermore
because windows can start and read/examine the drive, I know that the
problem must be on the linux side.

The boot drive is at SCSI 0, and the new 2nd drive is at SCSI 1. there
are not SCSI ID conflicts. I have checked all that.

Can anyone provide any assistance?

If you want a kernel that is the same as the distribution then go
download the kernel-2.2.16-XX.rpm and install it.

If you want to build a custom kernel then download the sources, read
the kernel-HOWTO at howto.tucows.com and then try to follow the HOWTO
step by step. I recommend using the make xconfig or menuconfig for
your configuration. you can copy the .config file from the other
kernel and use it as default values for the new config.

Subject: tape driver timeouts with scsi aha-1522a
Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 14:51:11 -0700

Hi All,

I've got an AHA-1522a SCSI card in my RH6.2 box. When the card is in there
by itself, I can successfully 'modprobe' the aha152x module and it loads
okay. But, when I added a QIC tape drive (scsi id#1), I get the following.

Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-21/scsi/aha152x.o
aha152x: detected 1 controller(s)
aha152x0: vital data: PORTBASE=0x140, IRQ=11, SCSI ID=7, reconnect=enabled,
parity=enabled, synchronous=disabled, delay=100, extende
d translation=disabled
aha152x: trying software interrupt, ok.
scsi0 : Adaptec 152x SCSI driver; $Revision: 1.7 $
scsi : 1 host.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun
0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun
0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 1, scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun
0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 1, scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun

scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 3, scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun
0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00

...

I got exactly the same symptoms when I used an old aha-1510a, that why I
thought I would try the 1522a.

If anyone get point me to where the problem is, that would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!
Corey.

Subject: manual start of aha152x scsi module?
Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 13:27:27 -0700

Hi All,

I installed an AHA-1510a ISA SCSI card in my RH6.2 box. When the system
boots, the kernel progress messages always say 'scsi hosts: 0'.

But, once the OS is up, I 'modprobe aha152x', and it sees the cards, and the
module loads successfully.

Shouldn't the kernel automatically see the card and load the module, or
should I add the modprobe to one of the rc.d startup scripts?

Thanks in Advance.
Corey.
