Try putting "0x340,11,1,1" on the first line. The "1,1" represents
parity and re-connection. Hope this will help.

That usually means that the inittab is wrong (wrong parameters for
mingetty) or something in missing (mingetty can't start and abort).
This look correct (to me).

Check if some library is missing in /lib.

I don't really thing there's a HOW-TO on this, as it's a fundamental
part of File & Directory permissions that'll be covered in most Unix
manuals.
On your unix box, try looking at the manual pages on the following
commands: chmod, chgrp, useradd, groupadd, passwd.
If you're still stuck, mail me for more info.

Apparently either my sound module is odd because it can do that, or it
is yours because it can't.
Can you now play an audio cd, or adjust the volume with mixer
controls?
My knowledge goes only as far as what I mentioned before, load the sound
module with the command "modprobe cmpci" and there shall be sound
support.
To prevent having to load a module manually every single time you
reboot, add it to /etc/modules.conf (for the quite up-to-date RedHat
machine I have acces to) in the form of
alias sound cmpci
On my Debian machine that is done by simply adding a line with "cmpci"
to /etc/modules.

Hi Robert,
I've just experienced the same problem as you, and I'm using the LM8.0
PowerPack original CDs.
Have you had any luck solving the problem? I'm reinstalling 7.2 at the
moment because without a Linux installation on my second hard disc GRUB
won't run and I can't get into Windows!

The normal order is "depmod -a" which updates all module dependancies
and is generally run during boot by the system, followed by loading all
relevant sound modules by running "modprobe es1371". IIRC that only
loads soundcore, but other sounddrivers would load more.

between GNOME and KDE, no need to re-install.

First comment, really you should be splitting your packet filter into 2
sections, an initial one which changes policy to deny for example and locks
down the machine before initial networking starts, and a second stage which
is run after networking is started to open up what you want.
Do this by going into /etc/init.d, and having a look at the scripts. Copy
the file called skeleton. The comments in the beginning are hints for
checkconfig, which you should use to install your scripts into the rc?.d
hierarchy.
Try 'checkconfig --list' to get a feel for what's going on, then RTFM
checkconfig(8).
On a start, the initial and final scripts should install firewall rules, on
a stop they should remove them. This will allow you to alter rules, and
easily have them enabled by /etc/init.d/myfirewall.final restart.
1) probably something to do with smbmount
2) I should right 2 scripts, one called pppon, the other pppoff. They
would start pppd and have wvdial do it's stuff, to connect to your ISP.
Then you can add a user to the dialup group, so it does not have to be
root.
In /etc/hosts.allow allow telnet in from your _internal_ network only,
deny it from anywhere else.
Create a user who when logged in, automagically runs pppon, a second one
for pppoff. This lets you build and tear down connections from your ISP,
without using commands.
3) I think you need to enable the Samba server, smbd see smb.conf.
Good luck
Rob

Subject: keyboard repeat rate
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 11:22:24 +0100
Hi. Can anyone explain the fact that my keyboard repeat delay
frequently resets to "ultra-slow" and refuses to be set back
again?
I use "xset r rate 10 100" in my xinitrc file, but often I find
that it changes to at least a second delay-before-repeat, and
re-issuing this command does apparently nothing. I haven't
spotted a pattern of what causes it, although this time I was using
the NumLock key immediately prior to it (see [1]).
I use XFree86 on Red Hat Linux release 6.2 (Zoot), and twm as
my window manager.
% xdpyinfo | grep "vendor string"
vendor string: Linux Mandrake (XFree86 4.0.1, patch level 25mdk)
Any help gratefully appreciated,
cheers,
al
[1] NumLock is a whole other story: I find the NumLock modifier
interferes with the Meta modifier as far as TWM is concerned, so
I can't alt-drag windows to move them when numlock is enabled. I
can't figure out why this should be either.

I don't know what is your Linux version, CPU, motherboard.
I have recently tried to install RH6.2 on AMD duron and KT133
motherboard, on boot up I had "general protection error" one
generating CPUID.
Apparently AMD chips do not have a cpuid as intel chips do.
Search from google.com there are some ideas if you have the same
problem.
