Paul, this may have something to do with Linux, the boot loader or
the format type on C:. I haven't used Linux. Suggest you change the
subject line a little and post a new message for more replies and a
faster resolution. If I come up with something I'll reply.

If you are using Kppp from KDE 1, try ignoring the error.

You have to assign a useful meaning to the NUM LOCK key in your x
configuration. If you use xmodemap, then an .Xmodmap file should
contain the lines:

keycode 77 = KP_F1
keycode 112 = KP_F2
keycode 63 = KP_F3
keycode 82 = KP_F4

The List of keysyms is in /usr/X11R6/include/X11/keysymdef.h
Use xev to find keycodes for keys on your keyboard.

I have linux serving as the gateway to dsl. In the same box I installed
dhcp to dynamically assign ip address to my other machines. I configured
another machine using Solaris8/Intel. Then I found during system start up,
the hostname was replaced by "unknown" although it was given an ip number.
I believe linux dhcp did this. However, I don't know how to keep the
solaris8 hostname. I tried to change /etc/dhcpd.conf in linux by adding
host lyra {hardware ethernet ...} Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to install a Linksys network card according to the
instructions at http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25

I'm running RH6.2, so I decided to install it as a module. I
downloaded the latest files, compiled tulip.c, and did the moving and
copying. Then I ran depmod -a

I got the following error:
unresolved symbols in ..../tulip.o
   pci_drv_unregister
   pci_drv_register

I'm guessing that I need to compile the pci-scan.c file somehow. I'm
not sure how to do this though. Could anyone give me a hand?

I'm a linux newbie, but familiar with programming.

Thanks,

Okay, forgive me for wasting bandwidth... a slight case of RTFM
here. I neglected to create /dev/ppp like the Changes file said
I had to do. Once I did that, it worked like a charm.

When netscape can't save the bookmark, then it is re-install time because
netscape messed-up somewhere; however, when the re-install is being done
one hasn't lost the old bookmarks.

For some totally unknown to me reason, I had to link my
/etc/ppp/*-secret files to /etc/sysconf/network-scripts before I could
make it work. I found that by setting up a seperate debugging log for
the ppp daemon. Several have said I shouldn't have to, so YMMV.

So it should be a working box.
In such situation the slowest component is fleshware, no new products

This is THE most important part, you have it before your eyes constantly.
Then RAM, investment in RAM gives better speed improvement than CPU internal
clock.
If the CPU works 1.7% or 4.2% of the time, who cares.
Bleeding edge M/B will let you know that they need few more years to be 99%
reliable, usually at the wrong moment.
On different note, Linux performs on antiquated hardware with supprising
speed, that the OS not hardware that makes big diff.
So invest smartly, and no matter what you buy today in half a year it is
nothing to brag about.

How do you reconfigure a serial port in Mandrake. I want to set ttyS3

kdm doesn't start kde. kdm starts the kde display manager. only root

If so all should be well after you type startx (after login)

I assume you installed X windows. If not there is no server so no GUI
