Each line in /etc/fstab lists a filesystem and it's mount-point (aka
partition and directory). When you want to use your new partition type
'mount /usr' (or reboot your system), the stuff you previously had there
disappears and typing 'ls -l /usr' lists the contents of your new
partition. If you unmount it ('umount /usr') your old stuff reappears.
BTW, I wouldn't do 'rm -fR' as the final step, but more like 'mv /usr
/usr_old' and delete after I'm happy everything has worked. Destroying
/usr isn't to be taken lightly ;-)

I've had this happen to me when my dsl connection has gone down. It
didn't matter that I was accessing a local page. Try connecting and see
if getting that local page doesn't speed up. If that is the problem I'm

I have installed VMWare 2.0.3 on my Linux. I have installed NT 4.0 as a guest
on a partition. Now I am trying to add a partition and have a plain disk on it.
Each time, I am creating a plain disk on a partition device (mounted as a file
system) of 2.6 GB, I get the following error,
"Unable to write block at offset 0x750f00000 in file /nt-d/nt-4d1.dat: No space
left on device. Could not create plain disk "/nt-d/nt-4d.pln"
If I try to create a plain disk of smaller size on the same partition, I
continue to get the same error.
I am following the exact instructions from the VMware support document. Is
there a formula for creating a plain disk on a mounted partition?
Thank you in advance.

Subject: Bad sound with RH7/CS4237B
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 15:00:41 GMT
Hi, I have a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT, which has a Crystal Semiconductor
4237B sound card. I've been running various incarnations of RedHat on
it for a few years, but I recently got a bigger hard disk and installed
RedHat 7.0. Now I'm having some weird problems with sound. I frequently
play MP3s, and sometimes when I do certain things when I play MP3s --
such as scroll quickly in Netscape, or type in the editor of a Scheme
development environment that I'm using -- the playback gets distorted.
It sort of sounds like it's "underwater," if that makes any sense. This
occurs both when I play MP3s in XMMS and mpg123. My sound setup on
previous versions of RedHat was identical, and I never had this problem.
I tried installing ALSA, but the problem persists, and I've picked up a
new one: frequently I hear "static," particularly towards the end of MP3
files. Again, this happens with both XMMS and mpg123. The files
themselves are on a read-only NTFS partition, so I know they haven't
been corrupted.
FWIW, here's details on my setup:
RedHat 7.0 (dual-boot with Win2000... don't know if that could make a
difference -- I was dual-booting with Win95 before)
Kernel 2.2.16, CS4237B support compiled as a module (it's the CS4232
module)
ALSA 0.5.10a
I know this is a pretty weird problem, and I probably didn't explain it
very well, but if anyone had a problem at all similar, I'd love to hear
suggestions on what I could do to fix it. I need my MP3s sounding good!
:)
Thanks.

do a

Not sure about Redhat 7, but on Solaris machines,
there is a file named /etc/nsswitch.conf.
This file controls what type of naming services
are used to resolve different kinds of names.
naming services to choose from are:
NIS
NIS+
dns
files (/etc/hosts)
if you have this file, edit it and add "dns"
(without the quotes) to the line containing
hosts: files
the line should look like
hosts: files dns
save the file, and it should work immediately...
At least in Solaris world it does...

Most people I know have a permament internet connection without the
need to dial in and use ppp. Second there's such a thing as modules.
They don't need to compile ppp or whatever support in the kernel as
with modules you can load that support as needed. Now for that to work
with the 2.4 kernels you needed to upgrade (among others) the modutils
software.
Now if you downloaded a precompiled kernel package from your
distribution, and they forgot to add ppp-support, take it up with them.

This is NOT at all obvious. A lot of Linux boxen are connected to LANs
and broadband is coming much more into play. The ones I have at home all
have NIC cards and the dual-homed one has one NIC pointing to my home
LAN and one pointing to my SDSL "modem" (as 3Com insist on calling it).

where 2.4.0-1 is your modules directory under /lib/modules. You then put
a
line in /etc/lilo.conf (in linux24 section)
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.0-1.img
and run "lilo -v". Apparently the reason is that IDE is modular under
2.4!

Nothing probably. I have a MS 'Intellimouse' (with the wheel), and
sometimes when I log out the mouse cursor shoots into the upper right
hand corner and refuses to come out. The solution (found by accident)
is to move the mouse around a bit (very techinical description this ;-)
) whilst moving the mouse wheel up and down. This usually persudes it
to come out of hiding. If you don't have a mouse with a wheel, I
wouldn't even try to harzard a guess as to what the problem is. :-)
Cheers,
Dave. :-)
