Yes, but have you edited $HOME/.ncftp/firewall for your firewall-host and
firewall-port, maybe with firewall-type=1? Can Netscape access ftp://
URL's when properly configured for your proxy.

Get a different ISP. Otherwise you may never be able to telnet or ssh to
an internet host (free shell acct, etc.), or use any other POP3 servers,
or do irc, or use time servers...

Yes, you can use --prefix also, It works slightly different from
--relocate. --relocate only changes the install location of the files in
the directory you specifiy, ie oldpath. --prefix changes the install
locations of all files in the rpm.

To display a list of files, this will list the full path where they are
installed, in an rpm that hasn't been installed yet use:

rpm -qpl foo.rpm

or to display information about an uninstalled rpm. This will tell you if
the rpm is relocateable also:

rpm -qpi foo.rpm

or you can combine them in the same command:

rpm -qpli foo.rpm

I'm trying to format a floppy and I use

fdformat /dev/fd0 and fdformat dev/fd0h1440 and both give me a "device
not configured" error.

So far, I'm totally lost about what causes the problem. I believe that
if there is only one floopy, it would be fd0.

Also, I'm formatting the floppy to use it as a boot disk for another
machine.
I have trouble attempting to use a vfat file system floppy as a system
boot disk for a new system.

Are you using the real sendmail, or postfix linked to sendmail? I never
could get the default postfix working in Mandrake 7.0. For sendmail the
above files are typically queued in /var/spool/mqueue. Did permission or
ownership change for that dir or sendmail:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root mail 4096 Jun 12 23:39 /var/spool/mqueue/
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 329800 Nov 9 1999 /usr/sbin/sendmail
(note the s's for suid, although, this is Mandrake 7.0)

Subject: crc error
Date: 13 Jun 2001 18:42:27 GMT

The power went out a few nights ago, and I'd left my computer on. When I
restarted my computer, I get:

Loading linux......
Uncompressing Kernel...
crc error --System halt"

It never finished uncompressing the kernel.
(Running RedHat 7.1 on a PIII)

I figured out from asking a few friends that my kernel was messed up for
some reason, so I recompiled it (after saving the old one, just in case).

When I tried restarted my computer after the rompile, I still got the crc
error (yes, I ran lilo before restarting). Then, I decided to just
reinstall RedHat 7.1. I reformatted my partition (I only have
one, for now) during reinstall, and finished the installation. After it
was done, it *still* didn't work. I couldn't figure it out. I tried
recompiling _again_, but that didn't work, either. I tried half-a-dozen
other things. The only thing I could get to work is boot from my
bootdisk and copy the image from the floppy into the /boot folder. This
is how I'm currently booting into Linux.

I also found a pattern in the response from uncompressing the original
kernel that RedHat put on my computer after the reinstall:

First boot: "crc error - System halt"
Second boot: "crc error - System halt"
Third boot: "invalid compressed format (err=1)"
Fourth boot: "crc error - System halt"
Fifth boot: it runs and loads, but something's messed up with the modules.
modprobe couldn't locate anything. I don' know why, though, since I hadn't
changed the location of the modules or anything else after the reinstall

I did this again, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It worked the same
way. My bootdisk that was made during installation worked, though! I have
no idea what's going on. As I mentioned earlier, I ended up copying the
vmlinuz kernel image on the floppy to the /boot folder, and then using
that one to boot.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why this might've happened? This is all
the same exact kernel that RedHat installed, so there're no utilities that I
need to upgrade.

In recompiling the kernel, I used:
make mrproper
make xconfig (and loaded one of the saved kernels from RedHat)
make dep
make install (for lilo)

I also tried:
make bzImage (instead of make install, and then manually did lilo and the
              copying of the image myself)

make modules
make modules_install (after backing up my old modules)

And yes, I always reran lilo to make sure everything was OK.

If anybody has an idea of what happened, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me
know. Thanks.

A true unix geek would roll their own with shell scripts using grep, awk,
sed, etc. For the newbie, Perl is good for parsing text (pattern search)
and lots of other things. You can even simulate a tail for log files so
you can monitor them on the fly (type: perldoc -q tail). Although, it
helps to have a book about Perl, because it may be easier to use an index
to look things up when you don't quite know what you are looking for,
until you get the hang of using perldoc. The O'Reilly books are good.

also dynamic.

Is there a configuration tool under Debian that I can use to write all these

While what you are saying is undoubtedly true, one of the reasons why
linux is not more popular is because when people ask for help,
politely or otherwise, someone always has the same answer---let's say
it altogether now--RTFM!!! Experience level and understanding vary
greatly and not everyone can figure out these howtos. I find most of
them extremely poorly written and very difficult to decipher without
help. This is mostly because they are often way out of date and the
instructions they give no longer work with newer versions of linux.
Someone with years if not decades of experience can fly right through
them. We might get more people to use linux if the first words out of
mouths are not "read this". Most of the time, helping that person to
get started and then referring him to documentation later is more
likely to be successful. If you do not wish to lend the time and
patience to help, then leave it alone.

Most coders and programmers I've know in my life time have a difficult
time writing in Human language. They have a hard time making the
transition from machine instructions to ordinary directions I or most
users can readily understand.

I think it's really awesome and commendable on the part of all of them
that what documentation for Linux that is out there even exists. It may
not be really always readily readable, but considering the source, and
open source, it really is a language of the heart.

There are Linux Documentation Projects that are crying for help. ;-)

If your Mandrake system, or for that matter any other system I've ever
used, works the way mine always have done, and your running KDE, etc,
after installing alsa and booting back up or starting alsa, just open up
Start, Multimedia, Sound, Sound Mixer, and click it up out of the

I have installed Slackware-7.1 several times and never did it get Lilo
right. During the installation you are offered the opportunity to make a
boot flopppy and you should do so, not only with Slack but with any other
distribution. You will have to manually edit /etc/lilo.conf then execute
/sbin/lilo.

Slackware install configures only the framebuffer. You have to configure
your Xserver yourself with xf86config or XF86Setup.

Look at /etc/X11/XF86Config for Section "Screen" Subsection "Display"
"Modes". I bet both resolutions are listed there. Delete the large one
that you do not want. Then restart the X server with ctrl-alt-backspace.

It appears that X allocates enough memory to hold the largest display
mode and treats the smaller modes as virtual screens.

BTW you can list several resolutions after "Modes" and switch between
them using ctrl-alt-keypad+/- without restarting X. Thanks to this group
for teaching me that trick.

Subject: Redhat 7.1 / Promise Ultra 66 install problem.

Hi,
I'm trying to install RH7.1 on my home machine

(Digital Venturis 6200 with a 333Mhz Pentium Overdrive processor it has 64MB
Ram and a Promise Ultra66 controller (latest bios) and a AC28400R WD disk
which detects correctly on the controller.)
Onboard IDE is used for the CD i boot from, nothing else in the machine, the
display is an onboard Matrox MGA 2MB.

The installation bombs everytime (in both text and gui modes) when the
"installing software" screens come on, (after the software selections &
partitioninings)
I have it dual booted with NT which works fine.
The error message is
pfd:<some number> Xlib: unexpected async reply

on the console

tried all sorts of combinations of partitioning and installation.
Doesn't help.

Would appreciate suggestions/help.
Thanks
Cyrus

I've had good results with logcheck - http://www.psionic.com. While you're
there, download portsentry too - it's a very effective IDS that can
automatically block attackers..

There's been a lot of complaints from Microsoft about the viral
nature of the GPL. Funny - they have no problem with allowing
any other virus into their systems.
