It sounds as though something may not be quite right with the
SMP/Mono-Processor settings.
Do you have an SMP system or just a single processor ? If you compiled the
kernel yourself,
check for SMP option. Maybe this helps ?

I ran into the same problem and after much searching have come to the
conclusion that you should either use another software other than MS Proxy
if your Linux need to get out or do what I did and scrap proxy altogether
and set up linux as the 'internet gateway'. It really is a lot easier than
it sounds.

When I was using MS Proxy my windows computers could get on the net fine
but no linux could. With linux as the internet provider for my network
everyone can get out! And not only that but it seems faster and even more
things work.

Even AOL's browser works behind Linux internet.

Ever heard of a book called Linux for Windows NT / 2000 Administrators:
The secret decoder ring?

Absolutely. Log into X as a standard user. Use "su" to become root.
Run "printtool". Add the printer using the filter "HP LaserJet 4/5/6
series, non-PostScript". Tweak the options and print test pages until
it prints correctly.

Managed to get it to work thanks to various ideas I got from the
group. Must have been some extra process hanging around when the
machine rebooted into DOS mode to apply changes. I got it to work
using PMagic created floppies to boot and run Pmagic without using
windows version ....worked without a hitch .....all installed now.

Thanks a lot to all who replied for the help.....

hi listers,
Why does bash change the operation of the mouse buttons when its in an
xterm? If it matters I am using a Motif xterm with RH v7. Before
starting X the left button copies by dragging button down and the right
button pastes.
It seems to me that previous version of Linux kept the same behavior in
xterms, and Sun systems definitely did. I've prowled around the startup
files until I'm cross-eyed and not found where this change happens.
Sorry about the rant. Can someone point out how to change this back?

I don't know how much this will help, but... I use the Exceed X server
everyday to run X apps on my Win 98 box. I however do not actually
connect to the Linux box WITH Exceed itself. I use Secure CRT to SSH
over (port forwarding is enabled). Then launch my X app from the
command line.

I would recommend trying to just launch the X app from the Linux box
first. Start Exceed on the Win box. Tell Linux where to display the
app:

export DISPLAY="my.workstation.ip:0.0"

Then launch the X app. If that works, then it's something in the
Exceed config that's not allowing you to connect to the Linux box in
the first place. If it doesn't work, I'd bet that Win NT/2000 has some
sort of security that is blocking the port by default. I am running
Win '98, so I cannot help much with the 2000 configuration.

If you have a cd-rw and a fast connection, you can download the iso
image
from many ftp servers around the world.

If you're not up to snuff on makind the CDs, perhaps you might
visit cheapbytes.com and order a CD from them (cheap and prompt).

However, I'd wait a few weeks and get a distro with the new 2.4.0
kernel.

I find that I have RPM's and Tarballs spread over several directories.
Is there a commonly accepted location for keeping all your downloaded
files or do you just download to /tmp and rm everything when you are
done?

Also, if you download an RPM and install it to your system, is there a
way to include it in Gnome RPM or Mandrake update , so the system will
check for it?

Thanks

Tom,

Try the following web site

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/LINUX/TrinityOS/cHTML/TrinityOS-101500c.html#toc8

They supply firewall 'rules' for about every situation (and also explain
how it all works) I have implemented their firewall with only a few mods
(port fowarding) and it allows netmeeting no probs.

Good luck

I have a 2 comp network with linux and win98. The network works fine even

anyone experience this? Any thoughts on correction? I have the number of
services allowed set to 25 so I am not exceeding that. Otherwise I haven't a

My set up is as follows...

I have an 18 gig hard drive with Windows 2000 and Windows 98 dual booting,
this drive is C:\, and is connected to my Ultra ATA66 controller.

I have a 4 gig drive with Corel Linux that is connected to the IDE
connector on the mother board. The Linux controls the MBR, as Corel's OS
loader pops up on start up, and I can select either Linux or Windows. If I
select Windows, it goes to Windows 2000 OS Loader to select between 2000 and
98.

I want to add a new 45 Gig drive as D: to the Ultra ATA66 controller.
However, all drives connected to this controller are assigned drive letters
before the IDE connectors on the mother board are. So, if I have them all
connected, all I see are the letters 'LI' when I start up. Is there a way
to tell the MBR that the Corel's Linux OS Loader is on drive E: now?

Thanks,
James Ayton, Jr.
