Simplest thing to do is make a boot disk for linux FIRST. What you will do
next will lose grub, lilo, whatever.
Boot from a windoze boot disk. Make sure it has FDISK on it. At the prompt
type fdisk /MBR. The caps are important. You'll hear the floppy spin a bit
then stop. At that point you *should* be able to reboot and have windoze
come up. Get rid of that goback crap when possible. Next boot from your
linux floppy after you're sure windoze is ok and type /sbin/lilo from a root
prompt. If it says it's not installed, mount your install cd and install
lilo. Use it instead, grub is a real bitch to make changes to.

I use 6.2 and due to previous experiences with x.0 versions 5.0 & 6.0
and all the bugs, I won't be downgrading to 7.0 since I don't want a
system that isn't as stable as what I have now. I don't know what they
have done to create all the problems with 7.0 that so many people are
having. My previous post works for 6.2 but I guess 7.0 is setup
different, not counting the bugs, so I will have to let someone else
that has 7.0 try to help.
A couple of things to check would be, that the network is configured
properly, to see that the module exists, to see if there is a
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 script that exists something
like this.
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
Or maybe like this:
DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
USERCTL=no
If they included "netcfg" in 7.0 and you are running X it gives a GUI to
help. If not running X then "ifconfig" can be used if they included it
in 7.0.
Best of luck.

Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 04:27:19 GMT
OK this was probably asked here a lot of times... And before
someone says RTFM, i already did... I couldn't find anything.
Couldn't figure anything out for the whole day so I guess
it's time to ask for help now :)
When trying to run make, i get a command not found or a similar
error (i only installed linux yesterday, don't have the error messages
memorized just yet :P).. Oh, right, I installed Mandrake 7.0 lnx4win
(i don't want to partition yet, just trying it out..). I downloaded the
GNU make and once untarred, I have to run ./configure.. but when
I do, I get an error saying something about $PATH and cc (OK,
I know, I should of written down the error message). So, I'm guessing
that make isn't installed on my system and there's something wrong with
my $PATH.
I can't make anything without this. Please help me...

Is it installed?
rpm -q make
If it is did you "cd" into the directory of what you are trying to make?

Subject: Can't RE-install software RAID on Red Hat + Proliant 2500R after CPUs
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 05:06:28 GMT
Howdy all -
I have a customer who had a Compaq Proliant 2500R with dual Pentium Pro
200's and 1GB Compaq RAM running Red Hat 6.2 set up with software level
RAID across seven 9GB drives in an external drive enclosure.
The CPU fan's grimed up and seized, and the server wound up corrupting
the entire RAID array. We blew the machine away, and started to
re-install Red Hat 6.2. The install failed (the RAID array came up at
the first boot missing a drive), and I figured maybe I'd cooked the
CPUs. So, I replaced the CPUs and resintalled. Same problem. After
several re-install attempts, I keep getting NCR SCSI controller errors
(error is similar to: "SIR 17, CCB done queue overflow"), from various
drives at various times.
I have run the latest Compaq diagnostics against the server twice, and
they come back fine. So does anyone have any idea why all of a sudden I
can't install Red Hat on this box? I am stretching here, but is it
possible that when the CPUs were overheated, they could have sent
instructions to the drives that actually damaged the drives? I can't
see how this would be possible, but the system itself (including the
SCSI controller) tests fine.
If convenient, please cc: me directly with any responses.

Subject: No IRQs for /proc/pci
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 06:40:37 GMT
I've got an older pentium abit motherboard and I
got the bios flashed recently. And I'm wondering
if this isn't contributing to the following
problem:
Whenever I install RedHat 6.2, 7.0 or Linux
Mandrake 7.1 or 7.2 I get the following errors:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource Temporarily unavailable
SIOCADDRT: Network is down
So far I've tried to install the following nics:
Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100 NC100 vs. 2.1
Linksys Ethernet Fast 1/100 LNE100tx vs. 4.1
3Com 3c905b-tx
All with the same errors. I've checked
the /proc/pci and there are no irq's assigned
there which seems a bit odd because my other
pentium III does show irqs in it's /proc/pci.
I've also tried to adjust the settings in the
bios to force it to assign irqs, but to no avail.
I've also d/l the latest drivers and got them to
compile and I've moved into the proper locations.
My questions are:
A. Is this normal?
B. Is there a work around?
C. If there is a work around what is it?
Thanks In advance.

If you have windows.
Start->Settings->Control Panel->System
Find the io and irq of your network card
(Click off auto configuration: because when windows reconfigure the NIC,
linux might not know the changes!!!
That happened to me!! It took me three days to figure it out.)
Add this line to your /etc/modules.conf
#-----start of my modules.conf for ne2k
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x280 irq=9 # my io and irq maybe different than yours.
#-----end of my modules.conf

Thanks for the answer. I figured some things wouldn't (specific to Sun)
work. I will have to do some more exploring to see if there is anything I
can do about it. :) I was happy to see that so many things did work
without much trouble, RAID array for instance and the nics couldn't have
been easier to setup.
Thanks again.

About the best you could do would be to create the master image, then
when you are done, shrink all partitions with Partition Magic, then do
your dd | gzip, then dump it to CD, which you might want to make
bootable.
To restore you would just have to zcat | dd, and then use Partition Magic
to resize the partitions. This is not too different from what you would
do with a winbox, except Drive Image does the last two steps as one,
which
is a good thing, since doing batched jobs with Partition Magic on large
partitions takes __**AGES**__
However, you might try parted (The GNU? Partition Editor) instead of
Partition Magic, or even ext2resize, although I would shy away from that
last one (you can't move partitions).
Typically, the Unix way would be to install it the same way you would
from tape drive (tar), then perhape a make install for the kernel, and
lilo, you're there, hopefully.
Hope This Helps
--Cameron Kerr
PS. I should be doing this in the not-so-distant future, so I'll let you
know of any updates (may even write a howto)
