I've gotten the same error, but only when I try to edit a page using
Composer. It will run , but as soon as I try to edit
something such as say, the background image, it will core dump and give a
Bus Error. I looked in /tmp but found
no ndebug file. This crash also occurs will logged in as root. Anybody know
what's going on? Thanks

It's not a bug. You have your systems setup to use xfs font server from
a different version of X. What you are doing is not just a workaround,
but the right approach. Move all fontpaths from /etc/X11/fs/config. Or
at least try them one at a time. That is where the xfs fontpath is (or
was). Turn off xfs while you are at it.

Yeah, w/out knowing which distribution you're using, it's kind of hard
to help out.

In Slackware, you'll see errors, but nothing that looks like that.

If you don't have a NIC, comment that part of the startup scripts out.
If you do, configure it properly and those errors should go away.

My observations exactly. SO is way too big and slow compared to either WP

This is because you have removed the console code when you rebuilt the
kernel. It's only a warning, but not very helpful if you are trying it out.
check you config. I'm guessing the virtual console stuff.

> Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel"

This is the showstopper. init is the first process in UNIX terms usually
located in /sbin. either something is overriding it (odd but possible, check
the parameters you are passing to the kernel eg lilo.conf), or you maybe
mounting the wrong partition on /. It still maybe a valid filesystem (eg ext2)
just not one with an init program where it's expecting it. You can use rdev
for this.

Fact of the matter is, there are howto's out there about parallel zip
drives, and most include recompiling the kernel.

Customizing the kernel to your machine is the surest way to get the
best performance out of it. Just be sure to read the kernel-howto and
make copies of your original kernel just in case.

Let me say that again.

MAKE COPIES OF YOUR ORIGINAL KERNEL JUST IN CASE.

I have a parellel zip, and it worked the first time I tried it, of
course I had read the howto, compiled the kernel appropriately, etc,
and it "just works"

Good luck to you.

Recently I upgraded my laptop from Slackware 3.5 (2.0.34) to 7 (2.2.13).
The full installation on 3.5 took about 400 megabytes. Imagine my
surprise when the 7 installation took nearly a gig! Especially when
my laptop has a 1.3-gig hard drive! Did Slackware really grow that
much?

I've tried deleting some packages, but I still have to really keep
an eye on disk space - between Wine (about 250MB) and a few other
things I'm down to 60 megabytes free.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep things a bit more
compact? It's nice to have a newer kernel, but things are getting
pretty tight.

Hello all,

After an attempt to upgrade my mandrake 7.0 system failed badly, I
ended up wiping the partition table and starting from scratch.

I d/led and burned two sets of mandrake 7.1 CDs, since the first set
didn't quite seem to work. I checked the md5 sums on the files after
download, and ran rpm -qpl on the cd images to check that the rpms
were ok.

Despite all this, when i try to install mandrake 7.1, i get as far as
the install of the Bdflush package, and I get an error installing the
package, regardless of which set of cds I use.

Even older mandrake or redhat install CDs that worked fine previously,
will now fail.

Windows reinstalled, and runs fine.

I also swapped drives, and tried to install on my second HDD, but I
got exactly the same problem.

Could the fouled up install have caused a hardware failure, preventing
bdflush from installing but not affecting Windows noticeably?

Has anyone else run into anything even remotely like this?

Hello,

I deloused 2.4.0-test6 and it does run fine. I had some
problems with re-installing the PCI driver for the Actiontec
modem but all is well. I just learned about using make with
the -j 4 switch and haven't had a chance to try it. I did
install gcc-2.95 with make bootstrap MAKE="make -j 4" -j 4
and all four cpu's were utilized up to 98% simultaneously
concurrently, something I had never seen before. I'll have
to try doing the kernel sometime.

I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.0 on a computer that doesn't have a floppy

"second stage installation" it throws up an error:

        _X11TransUnixSocketConnect: Can't Create: errorno = 111

(or something to that effect, it scrolls too fast)

then it continues on and then suddenly hangs at the line:

        <7> ISO 9660 Extension: RRIP_19911A

I never ever get to the initial installation screen...

Is the X11 error significant, or the fact that I don't have a floppy drive?

Any suggestions?

Mike,

I use MI/X a win32 freeware program for win9x/NT, has shipped on three
of the last four SuSE releases. Find it here:

http://www.rahul.net/kenton/xsites.html#XMicrosoft

I've exported my environment sucessfully several times (KDE) but get
much better performance by just using indivudual apps remotely, instead
of using the whole environment.

My fastest machine is a 200mHz box, and it's sufficiently fast to make
using it this way feasible. Every computer has no less than 96mb ram,
and that may make a substantial difference.

I got a note last week from some of the developers (they're trying
to figure what Cool Stuff to do with the spreadsheet side of things,
and I've got some interesting "possible design notes") and heard
essentially the same.

The intent seems to be to decompose the system into "engines" for
the respective areas (WP, spreadsheet, DB, ...), and have those each
be "servers" that "client front ends" will interact with.

That being said, I remain a tad skeptical. I figure that this sort
of "decomposition" is likely to amount essentially to starting the
design process from scratch. In effect, this means that they throw
away StarOffice as it exists now, and design something Completely
New.

There might be _some_ usable code fragments in the existing code base,
but if the "decomposition" discussion is to be taken seriously, it amounts
essentially to the next "version" really being rebuilt from scratch,
and having minimal relationship with the existing code.

The net impact of this would amount to being rather like the Mozilla
project. The most recent "M17" version is getting somewhat usable,
but it has been two and a half years since the initial code release
was done.

A from-scratch redesign of SO _could_ go faster than that, but not by
2 years :-).
