Oh yeah...
What about the drivers from the 3com page? Do I need those?

On a redhat 6.2 system you can allow user control by editing
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 and adding this line just
below the "PAPNAME=" or the "PEERDNS=" line.

  USERCTL=true

Well for 6.2 no you would use the 3c59x module which included withthe
kernel source. But for 7.0 ??? Who knows????

Some of the applications I use won't run on Solaris correctly (we have
tried). Or at least very stable. So, I need the power of a Sun box but the
flexibility of the Linux OS (at least until everything is ported).

The RedHat 7.0 installer requires 16Mb RAM. So you're out of luck here.

Btw. a minimal install uses a little above 200Mb disk space - so you
would fill up you HD too.

Try an older one. I think 6.2 requires 16Mb RAM too, so perhaps you will
need to go to 5.2 or non-RedHat.

Thanks for the input so far.

I have more information. I had removed this drive( so I could get into
the internet to post the original question). After I read the messages
I though I remembered that when I had booted into a win boot floppy, I
was not able to see the C: drive.

So I reinstalled the drive as a slave to this ome and it looks like
Windows does not see that partition(slave c:, which would now be d:).

the only place I had seen the contents of that partition was in a linux
command prompt

So, can I do Fdisk /MBR if I cant get to that partition? If I make it
the primary drive again and boot to the floppy, will it know there is a
C: partition even though I cant cd to it?

finally, would a better approach be to use something like partition
magic? I have not used that program but I was wondering if it had
repair tools?

Thanks again,
Noel

Is your lpd filter a member of the faxserv group?

The totally insecure solution of course is chmod a+w
/var/spoot/fax/outqueue, what holes this opens up depends on your fax stuff.

Subject: Weird problems with Nvidia drivers & kernel 2.4.0
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 23:53:06 +0100

Hi there,

I am experiencing very weird problems with Nvidia drivers & kernel 2.4.0
& I have tried everything I know of.

short description:
whether using, NVAGP, AGPGART or no AGP (thru the NvAgp option) I can
start an X session but when I quit it and start another one, the display
goes kind of blue and weird red lines appear @ the top of the screen.
The box is not pingable, keyboard doesn't respond. only solution is to
reboot. This doesn't happen with 2.2.18 !

long description:
I have tried this on two systems.

System 1:
ASUS A7Pro MoBo which has a VIA KT133 chipset,
TBird 1Ghz,

System 2:
MSI 6167 MoBo with AMD IronGate chipset,
Athlon 500Mhz

Both systems have 384M of SDRAM PC100 memory, a Diamond Viper 770 TNT2
Ultra video card, An Iiyama Vision Master Pro 450 (A901HT) screen, 3Com
NIC, SBLive!, Adaptec 29160 SCSI card, SCSI CDROM, SCSI CD-Burner, IBM
SCSI HD (18G). They are running Debian 2.2r2 & two different kernels
2.2.18 & 2.4.0. Each kernel patched with reiserfs patch. No reiserfs
partition yet. Nvidia driver is 0.9.6. Xfree is 4.0.1.

When using 2.2.18, everything goes rather well on both systems (rather
because sometimes I have 3D screensaver lockups) when using kernel 2.2.18.

Using 2.4.0, the first X session (whatever account in used) runs fine.
After exiting this session, I wait for a random period of time between 2
& 30 secs. then I start another X session. A Blue/Purple screen is
displayed with red lines on top of screen. keyboard doesn't answer.
Boxes not pingable. I even waited for about an hour. The only solution I
found is to reboot :-(

I have tried with different settings, different amount of RAM, AGP
Aperture size, AGPGART compiled in, AGPGART no compiled in, AGPGART as a
module, no framebuffer, with framebuffer, Fast writes, no fast writes
...etc but the problem remains the same.

Any clues ? this pb is kind of driving me crazy :-( Any help will be
greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance,

Saad.

And everything after here is irrelevant, too.

The problem is the error "time error 43198 over 1000 seconds; set clock manually".
NTP won't start
if the time error is greater than a certain threshold, in your version, 1000 seconds
or 16 min 40
sec. The reason why is that the NTP works by gently speeding up or slowing down your
system clock
until synchronization is acheived. NTP assumes that if the error is greater than 1000
second, then
it will take too long to synch.

There are a couple of things you can do. Probably the easiest is to populate the file
/etc/ntp/step-tickers with a list of time servers, all on one line and separated by a
space. If
that doesn't work, then you will have to put an invokation of ntpdate in your time
startup file.
ntpdate sets the date in one jump. This is considered A Bad Thing because it disrupts
everything
else that relies on time. On the other hand, it may be the best you can do.

Time, it turns out, is very complicated.

I hope this helps

Well at least you got a command prompt.

startx is the command to start your default gui. give it a try and see what
you get. Xconfigurator is the X setup tool for the 6.x series of mandrake,
I don't know if it is still there in the 7.x series. You should also have
XF86Setup and xf86config. They are less user friendly setup tools but may
work on hardware that others don't.

Remember that in most real OS's case matters.

If you get "locked up" you can probably switch to a different virtual
terminal with <alt> Fkey, and log in. Then run top, find the PID of the
process that is not responding, q will quit top, use kill -s9 PID to abort
it.

kdm and gdm are login/display manager, if they work you can select which
gui you run.
