It indicates hda7
This should be hda6 according to your partition table.

Forgot to update lilo.conf?
try "linux root=/dev/hda6" when the lilo prompt appears.

Subject: SB16 and kernel 2.4.0
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 10:19:04 GMT
Hi,
I've successfully compiled and installed kernel 2.4.0 except for one
thing: sound support.
I have compiled it several time with either sound modules or with sound
built into the kernel, but I get no sound. Trying to start the mixer
brings the message that there is no mixer.
I've never had to do this before. I had RH 6.1 which came with a huge
precompiled kernel (2.2.12-20) and preconfigured modules.
Compiling your own kernel is great. The new kernel is half the size of
the old one, and my old P120 now seems to run like a bat out of hell.
In my last try, I compiled the sound drivers into the kernel. At boot
up, I get the message
localhost kernel: Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu
Savolainen 1993-1996
localhost kernel: sb: No ISAPnP cards found, trying standard ones...
localhost lpd: lpd startup succeeded
localhost kernel: sb: I/O, IRQ, and DMA are mandatory
localhost kernel: YM3812 and OPL-3 driver Copyright (C) by Hannu
Savolainen, Rob Hooft 1993-1996
Does this mean that I have to specify io, irq, and dma when I compile?
If so how do I do it?
Or does it mean I should add a boot parameter to lilo.conf? If so,
what is the parameter and syntax? The HOW-TOs I've looked at say
little more than that it is more trouble than it's worth to add sound
to lilo.
Also, I get the following message when shutting down
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0
This is perplexing because I presently have no sound modules. Is my
problem simply that I'm inadvertently accessing modules used by the
previous kernel? If so, what is accessing them, and how do I stop it?
Besides upgrading modutils and all of the other stuff you're supposed
to upgrade, all I've changed is the kernel and the System-map.
As a newbie, I don't feel like tinkering too much more without expert
advice. If you look in the book, _Recipes for Disaster_ under
"Tinkering with Linux," you'll see my picture.
Lastly, the sound card is a Soundblaster 16 PnP (no, it doesn't work
with isapnp installed either). The old modules.conf options were
sb dma16=5 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330 dma=1 irq=5
op13 io=0x330
They used to work, but not anymore, even when I boot the old kernel.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
John Morris

try `lilo -v`

easiest: connect hdb as hda
otherwise add to lilo.conf:

Use the bootdisc you made during the installation.
But then again, you probably didn't make one.
Not so clever.
Try the installation disc. There's probably a bootdisc image.
Use rawrite to write the image to a floppy.
rawrite is probably also on the CD.

Hi
Is there a way of exporting the sound to a different machine in a
network like exporting the display. I mean you can export the display by:
export machine_op:0.0
Is there a similar mechanism for exporting the sound as well??

It is true, but only for the partition windows is aware of.
As windows doesn't detect a linux partition, it still is on the first
partition as far as windows is concerned.
Try to give hda1/2 a windows partition ID. Windows will no longer boot.
(Linux will still boot though)

if it's linux extended it wouldn't matter, if windows extended, you can
forget about it..

type 0x0F if the extended partition (partially) crosses the 1024th
cylinder,
otherwise it should be 0x05

Bonjour,
On my newly installed redhat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.16-3), by default "sort"
seems to be the same as "sort -l", so upper-case characters are sorted
with lower-case ones and all my scripts using sort are to be rewritted!
Is this behaviour "normal"?
"alias sort" returns nothing.
Thank you.

esd supports listening to tcp network sockets, but I have never tried to
use it over a network. Then play the audio files on the remote server
with esd-aware programmes which transmit the audio signal to your
location. Be aware though that uncompressed sound is quite large.

The best bet by far. Cheapbytes has a three-CD set (install, source, and

Thank you for correcting me on this. You're right; I don't know

I know this is an old question. No doubt I am making a simple mistake
but I have done my best with web search results.
Basic situation same as for old postings - BIOS correctly reports 128M
RAM, free reports only ~64M under the word "total". However,
(a) I am using kernel 2.2.16-22 (RH7) which ? is not supposed to require
editing of lilo.conf
(b) I have edited lilo.conf with
append="mem=128M"
under the label=linux line with no effect.
Have I mucked up the syntax?
Am I looking at the right number with free?
If this is an often-answered question I apologise but the only remedy I
could find was the above, and only with older kernels.

Silently updating a software release is simply going to cause more
confusion, because then people don't really know what they have. If
you have a CD or an ISO image called "Red Hat 7.0", in that case, you
have no idea what, if any, bugs have been fixed, what new bugs may
have been introduced, what patches will work and what ones won't, and
so on. Much better to keep the release (bugs and all) stable, and
then immediately install patches.

If you want to setup a desktop.. Caldera is much better organised and

clumsy to to master. Mandrake and Caldere have much better accessible
options for that.
Also the load of Rh is bigger then the other...It fires up more
deamons which makes it slow on a less then stellar system...
For example on my laptop toshiba protege 3010CT...RH is out of the box
to much for this one...I cannot use Gnome because lack of memory..
Fiddling with the settings makes is more manageable.
My experience is that I like Caldera and Mandrake the most...mainly
because of it's easy access to options.

Lee,
I've seen a few answers to your question. One of the things that people
forget to mention about StarOffice from Sun is that it is FREE! All you
have to do is point your browser to www.sun.com/staroffice and download
it free from their web site. Or, if you want the CD, all you pay is
$9.95 to cover the cost of the media and shipping. I've used it myself
and find it very flexible and easy to use.
Good luck!

Carlos,
Try checking the connections for your hard disk to make sure they're snug. If
the RH install isn't finding your hard disk, it may be because the connection is
lose.
Good Luck!

I'm surprised if the kernel isn't in boot already - mine appears in /,
but it's a symlink into /boot - but /dev/hda5 appears to be under 1024
anyway, so it shouldn't matter.
Windows, OTOH, appears to be entirely above 1024. I thought it didn't
like that?
The other thing is, there appears to be a chunk of unused space from
1022 to 1249.
Personally, I also much prefer if possible to have partitions numbered
in ascending order - probably makes no difference, but it's easier to
see what's happening.

Subject: Recompiling problem
Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 17:26:33 +0400
Hi
This is the first time I tried re-compiling the kernel. I used RedHat 7.0
.After a lot of work I was finally able to re-compile without any error
messages.
However when I tried to boot, the machine just locks as if it can't see the
SCSI hard disk (but I am not sure)
I can boot on the old kernel without problem.
It gives me the following error :
Request_module[block-major-8] : Root fs not mounted
VFS : Cannot open root device 08:05
Kernel panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 08.05
The SCSI disk is recognized while installing and works fine. I even tried
recompiling without changing anything and still I get the same error
messages
Can anyone help
Thanks
Dennis
