you're booting from floppy, right? why not boot from disk?
If you have to boot from floppy, try adding the 'compact' parameter to the
lilo record on the boot disk:
create a boot disk (mkbootdisk or whatever)
insert it
mount it:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy -t ext2
look at this file
/mnt/floppy/etc/lilo.conf
or otherwise create one similar to
boot=/dev/fd0
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
compact
image=vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
label = linux
root = /dev/hda8
read-only
and write out the new lilo.conf to the floppy:
lilo -r /dev/fd0 -C /mnt/floppy/etc/lilo/conf
finally umount
umount /dev/fd0
and reboot
This will speed up the loading of floppy-based boots.
Apart from that, get a better floppy drive for the server, $20,000 won't mean
you've got a fast floppy drive...

Thanks for the input. Y'all've talked me into 6.2.
My current 6.1 was my intro to Linux and I'm relieved to hear 6.2 is better
than 6.1.
I can't seem to find a list of differences or enhancements between 6.1 : 6.2
Or, for that matter 6.x : 7.x.
I assume a point release indicates minor enhancements and not just bug
fixes?

I am able to type LILO to reinstall LILO in Linux console, but I am
unable to reinstall LILO by typing LILO in Linux console emulator under
X-Windows. Error message says, "#Bash Command Not Found". Why didn't it
work in X-Windows, but it does in Linux console? Please advise.

Wouldn't think so. However, the GNU sort changed behaviour some releases
ago and tries to do the sort based on the specification locale and
collating sequence. This, however, makes sort less usefull for some
purposes, as the sort result becomes different from what we are used
to and espect from having used the sort command for many years. Thus,
redhat has tried to fix the problem by adding the new flag, but as far
as I remember there was some bugs in the fix, and a fix to the fix has
been posted on the update site. Also, redhat's bugzilla has some
entries on this matter as far as I remember.
Unsetting all locale related environment variable seems to bring back
the good behaviour.
IMHO, we still need strict ASCII sort for the sort command regardless
of the locale.

Don't know what's missing.
However, don't count on /dev/sndstat; some drivers (such as the es1371

Subject: ISA modem setup
Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 14:52:49 GMT
Greetings folks.
I just started playing with Linux again recently. I had a copy of
Mandrake 6.something that I tried to get functioning on a PC alond with
Windows 98, which had been running there for a while. I had to buy a
new modem, as the original was a Winmodem. I bought a Zoom 56k ISA
modem. I first tried hard-jumpering the IRQ and I/O address, but I
couldn't get it to work properly in Windows, so I jumpered it to Plug
'n Play. After a little tinkering, I also got it working in Linux.
Now I decided to upgrade to Mandrake 7.2, which is great because it
easily recognized several devices that I thought I was going to have a
hell of a time with. Unfortunately it didn't properly recognize the
modem. When I run kppp, I get a "modem busy" message. After I used
HardDrake to set the IRQ and address for the modem, I instead got a
"modem not responding" message. If I tried a couple of times, it would
sometimes start running through the modem commands very slowly. In such
cases it would even dial, but would never make a connection.
I briefly tried using isapnp, but couldn't make any sense of the man
pages or error messages I got when I tried to use it.
Am I missing something totally obvious? I don't remember having to go
through this much trouble last time. Any ideas?
Thanks...

For starters, don't multipost to so many groups
Especially when they are irrelevant or do not exist
****************************************************
1) it's `lilo` ,not LILO
2) always use the full path `/sbin/lilo`
3) Use the verbose switch `/sbin/lilo -v`
I assume your path settings changed.
The /sbin isn't supposed to be in your path, it's in root's path though.
You don't work as root all the time, do you?

Trying to make a judgement call without enough experience -
I just upgraded from 512 RAM to 1 GB. My swap space is 768. Should
I increase the swap? We do often use all of the RAM available on a
machine, but we of course try to avoid using the swap.
In the same way, I also downgraded a 1 GB RAM machine to 512 (bad RAM).
Do I need to lower the swap space?
In both situations disk space is not a concern.
I assume the best way to adjust the swap is to use Partition Magic?
I don't want to go through a whole reinstall of either machine.

This error means that the Bash shell (which is generally what you are
talking to when you type commands in either the console or a
console-emulator under X) was unable to find the lilo executable file in
any of the directories in its PATH environment variable. You can check
the contents of this variable by typing "echo $PATH" at the command
prompt. As to why the contents of PATH would vary from one console to
another, this generally indicates that you are not logged in as the same
user in both places. On most Linux systems, the "whoami" command will
show you your current effective user id.
Hope this helps,

Seems like lilo is not contained in the PATH or the PATH variable is not
set altogether in your Xterm.
Eigther, you were running your Xterm as normal user whereas lilo is
normally not in the PATH or you
started your terminal emulation without parsing your login files (e.g.
-ls switch for xterm) so that the PATH
was not set.
Try typing 'which lilo' at the console where lilo works, which gives you
the full path to lilo. Then you can
use the full path in your console emulation under X to invoke lilo.

Not concerning mail but your above 'situation', if you just need to find your
computer on the net when the IP address changed you should check into a dynamic
DNS host, such as http://www.dyndns.org. That way you can use a name such as
'ftp://myhost.dyndns.org'. There are also clients available to update your IP
automatically.

It was also possible to configure sama from (linuxconf) that is not

Recently upgraded from KDE 1.x to 2.0.1 - latest stable version

still - but had a few weird problems:
1. 'doubling up' of icons/apps in the KDE menu (and kmenuedit doesn't
'see' these or allow me to get rid of them),
2. major problems trying to get kpackage to still work,
3. some apps no longer function because of lib files/other bits that are

a no install response using 'rpm -q whatever.rpm':-(
4. Despite the fact that doing kpackage/rpm type upgrading is *supposed*
to sort out all the dependency problems/etc. I now know I've got bits of

Anyway - any/all help I can get on tidying things up/sorting things out

As I said, we often use all of the RAM on the machine. We don't like to use
the swap for obvious reasons - it bogs down the machine. If the process is
to big for one machine, we move it to another machine with more RAM.
Although, I don't claim to be an expert on how the machine uses swap, that's
why I'm asking for a judgement call!

I don't need to increase it. It is already set to 1024 MB. I said, the
machine had bad RAM, and this is just a temporary downgrade until I can get
another 512 module. Again, I'm not claiming to be an expert on swap.

What is this? The first line of my message stated that I don't have enough
experience!!! I don't think asking for a judgement call on potentially
corrupting the partition table on a machine with crucial data on it is
'measly'.

Hi,
I just tried to update my kernel to 2.4.0, from RH7. I have followed all the
instructions in Kernel-HOWTO, and also all the instructions from:
My steps to building and installing the 2.4 kernel in Redhat 7
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernel2.4upgrade.html
I downloaded the kernel source, the unzip it.
Then I upgraded all the other library as written in Documention/Changes
Then run make mrproper.
Then make menuconfig, and set the config for the kernel.
Then make dep, make clean, make bzImage.
Then copied the bzImage to /boot
Then add another pointer in lilo to point to the new bzImage
Then /sbin/lilo
Then reboot
There was no error message. My computer just hanged after displaying this
message:
Loading linux...........
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel
I have tried 3 times, with different configuration on the make menuconfig,
but all failed. But if I boot using the old kernel, it runs smoothly. What
happened? Please help me. Thank you very much.

I have 256 MB RAM and 128 MB swap on my box. It hardly ever uses any of
the swap at all except for programs like Netscape, and then it uses very
little swap. I don't think that you need more than 128 MB of swap when
you have a lot of ram.

1.5x for 512 - 1024, and 1x for above 1024 MB. I'm not terribly sure why he
thought so much swap was required, but I think he arrived at those ratios
through experience dealing with many different machines and RAM amounts.
The machines he set up are stable and rarely get bogged down, as long as the
users don't push them over the RAM!
Thank you kindly,
Ken
