I have compiled and installed squid 2.3 and I get this error.

squid -z

FATAL: none: (2) No such file or directory
Terminated abnormally

I have read the faq and install manual, and I have checked the config
file for errors, nothing shows.
The syslog shows the same error.
Is there something I am missing?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do "ls / -al" and see what's filling the directory up.

Greeting,

Instead of using make zImage use make bzImage. This will create a
compressed version of the kernel since the uncompressed one is too big.

Peter,

This may not work but have you consider moving your /tmp directory
else where? 175M should be plenty in my opinion too.

If nobody here has identical hardware and
gives you their settings, try picking the
lowest reasonable settings during the X
install procedure - the smallest video
card and maybe SVGA for the monitor to start
with. Then don't do the autoprobe.

When you finish the install, you can run
Xconfigurator or XF86Setup again and inch
the settings higher until your screen
appears stable and shows the whole picture.
Alternately you can learn to edit the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file manually, there
are docs supplied with the distro.

read man XF86Config, expecially the Monitors
section, for help.

If you have endless trouble go to linuxdoc.org
and read the XFree86 HOWTO, which unfortunately
has been updated to the newest version of
XFree86 and may not fully apply to the one you
have with RH 6.0.

I seem to remember in one of my early Red
Hat installs there was a bug in the way
the X settings were written into my config
file that always caused the screen to be
black regardless of what I did. The fix was
to edit the configuration file manually and
put a pair of "" marks around the resolution.
I think this was in 5.2
but possibly the problem continued in some
6.0 versions. If you are using an old monitor
with a resolution of 640x480 this bug may
be affecting you. You will need to edit
line 350 of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config
to read: Modes "640x480" (the quotes will
be missing).

Dear All,

I am pretty new to Linux. I have trouble installing Red Hat 7.0 into my
PC. After I gone through all the config screens and start to copy the
package into my PC, the process just stops and with no response!

Was the problem caused by hardware conflict? I have am ASUS A7V mobo
with AMD TB 750. And the harddisk is 1.2G. It runs OK in Win98Se. Or is
the harddisk to small for Red Hat 7.0?

    Thanks a lot!!

Behold my friend, there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

I am sending this message from a windows machine MASQ'd behind a linux
box containing 2 dreadful 3c509b-tpo nics. after many, many hours of
work and frustration, i finally got everything to work. it's painfully
simple, here's how:

Linux HATES having two cards share the same module, ESPECIALLY the
3c509s. My first step was to DISABLE PnP OS in my BIOS. I then used
the 3C5x9CFG.EXE utility from 3com to alter the settings on my NICs to
io=0x300,0x310 and irq=10,11. Also in the bios, I set those IRQ to
LEGACY ISA. Once inside linux, I merely added a seperate instance of
the 3c509 module for each card. It's this simple:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 3c509
options -o 3c509-0 io=0x300 irq=10
options -o 3c509-1 io=0x310 irq=11

once i rebooted, everything worked fine! respond if you have any more
questions, by now I consider myself an tried and true expert on the
subject :)

I am running KDE 1.1.2 under SuSE 7.0. I have a PPP (piss poor product)

I changed the group to users for kppp. Only gave them read and execute

it under my own account that is part of group USERS. The log window says
that it is starting pppd and then disconnects from the ISP and repeats this
until it needs to be shot, stabbed, poisoned, run over, and drowned.

I have not clue what to do beyond these permission changes. Any help is
greatly appreciate, and welcomed by my linux system, it doesn't like me
being mad at it.

"eth0" refers to Ethernet. See the Ethernet How-To which should be on
your Linux CD-ROM and is also available at:

Can someone please tell me how I can change the resolution in X? I just
installed Red Hat 7 (I decided to beat my head against the wall AGAIN by
trying to use Linux).

I can not find how to set the resolution ANYWHERE in the documentation. Isn't
this kind of something common that people would probably want to do?
(Especially that it defaults to 640x480; what is this 1985?)

I am trying to give Linux a chance because I really hate MS Windows... but at
least in that you can just right click on the desktop and pick the
resolution. SIMPLICITY PEOPLE! LINUX HAS A L O N G WAY TO GO.

And if anyone has ANY clue about how to get my sound card to work, that would

In Linux it's even simpler, you don't even have reach for the mouse (in general
Linux people like to move their hands as little as possible, and do everything
from the keybord).

CtrlAlt +
CtrlAlt -

Note that the +/- are the ones on the notepad, at the very right end of your
kbd.
Of course, there must be some valid resolutions in your /etc/X11/XF86Config
file.

When you get to the point when you create/edit the partitions (in druid), do
not specify a mount point for the dos partition. It's a known bug in the RH7.0
installer.

The hard disk is pretty small too. If you already have Win98 on it, the Linux
partition is even smaller. Install fewer packages
(which you may not know how to select), or get a larger disk.

... since your configuration results in something too big for zImage's
(de)compression methods.

(The uncompressed one is called "vmlinux".)

What is Quantum[1-3] used for? What do you store on those 3
partitions.
        If you can move /tmp to quantum2, /var to /quantum1 and /root
can stay were it is "thats the sysadmins home, although it tends to
get filled (at least here) with development scraps, You can move it to
/quantum3 if you are always dloading to /root or compiling new
programs.

Boot windows and see what irq, i/o range your modem is on (device
manager). Then in linux

pnpdump /etc/isapnp.conf (back up your old isapnp.conf if you have
one)
edit /etc/isapnp.conf and uncomment the stanza with the settings you got
from windows
run isapnp or reboot.

You also need to tell the linux kernel what resources to use when trying
to talk to the modem, so for instance if your modem was assigned irq 11
and is on com3, say, then

setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 11

man setserial for more. From the symptoms you described it sounds that the
modem and the kernel can't talk to each other.
Often the reason is that they are using/expecting different resources.
If you get the right resources, put the setserial command in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local
