I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 (not 5000e) running Linux
Mandrake 7.1 with a 1400x1050 pixel 15" screen. The
video card is an
ATI 3D Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2X
with 8MB memory. I'm running XFree86-3.3.6 Mach64
server patched with Steve Hsieh's patches according to
the various Linux on Laptop HOWTOs for the I-5000. I'm
using vga=2 in the lilo.conf file as required.
For the life of me, I can't get 1280x1024 to run on
this thing---which I need for presentations. I always
get a distored wrapped-around image. 1400x1050,
1024x768, and 800x600 work fine.
Have tried `xvidtune', read ESR's video HOWTO, &c.,
used `kvideogen' from KDE, all with no good results.
I've also tried 1280x960 thinking that I must stay with
a 3x4 aspect ratio, this being an LCD display.
Would someone point me straight (or give me a known
working modeline for 1280x1024 or 1280x960) please?

Well, it certainly is possible. It works best under the tty console,
terminal emulators tend to use awkward fonts. You might like to have a
look at the program dialog, and the library ncurses (both of which you
probably have)

I know that a firewall can be set up to deny certain hosts, can you set it
up to block people on a network from going to certain domains and sites?
Any help is welcomed.

I'm currently using an etower 600is. I've been able to load SuSe 6.1
and Mandrake 7.0. The problem is getting it to recognize the video
and sound "card." Also, I'm having trouble getting it to recognize
the PCI 10/100 card.
I made the necessary directory and copied files and even compiled the
driver tulip.c and got errors. I spoke to a few people and may be
near fixing that problem.
If anyone has any constructive advice on the hardware problem, please
let me know.
Thanks and all the best,
Phil

"ls -f" will list "." dot files also.

Subject: iptables & 2.4.0
Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 23:24:20 -0600
Greetings,
I've run into a problem with firewalling under the 2.4.0 kernel on Red
Hat 6.2 .
My build of the kernel went smoothly. I compiled in the option for
NetFilter so that I could use iptables. Under the NetFilter
configuration options, I selected everything as modules except ipchains
and ipfwdm(?) support. After kernel installation I downloaded the
iptables package and installed it.
>From what I understand, that is all I need to do. However, when I try
to test iptables with a rule specified towards the loopback device
(iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p icmp -j DROP...test as seen in the
iptables HOWTO), I get the following error message:
"iptables v1.2: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who?
(do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded."
Now, I have checked and double checked my kernel configuration to make
sure it is correct--I've recompliled the kernel at least twice since
encountering this problem. And like I said, all the proper options for
NetFilter support seem to be in place. The 'support for NetFilter'
option under "networking" in xconfig is set to 'Y' and all NetFilter
config options (expcept the 2 specified above) were selected as
modules. Of course, all modules were built and installed after 'make
bzImage' at kernel compilation.
One interesting thing to note is that when I run the 'lsmod' command, I
see no modules loaded that seem to relate to packet filtering. Are
there modules that I need to manually install in order to get iptables
to work? If so, what are they? The error message seems to indicate that
some modules need to be loaded, but I thought the modules made for the
kernel were "loaded on demand" and that I didn't need to do anything.
I've searched newsgroups, read the iptables HOWTO, etc. but I've had no
luck figuring this problem out. I would very much appreciate any advice
on this issue.
Thanks in advance to all who reply

Yes of course. Normally you would do that by simply using your own
addresses as the source and the destination as the one you block or just
denying the destination:
ipchains -A input -i eth0 -d 199.95.206.201 -j DENY
which blocks www.doubleclick.com. Now the problem with this is that it
blocks only ip-adresses effectively, and most organisations that you would
want to block, will have more then one ip-adress. Most of those will also be
from different blocks of the ip-address space, so they can't be covered
easily by blocking larger chuncks of adresses by use of netmasks and
such. AFAIK all filtering/firewalling done by the kernel is ip-based,
not address based, so that might be a problem. Unless you have a veru
short list of domains that need to be blocked and are willing to add
them all by hand.
Now in the question you imply that you would want to restrict
webbrowsing to certain sites. The best thing to do is to use a
transparent proxy, which can filter all requests and can then deny acces
to sites on predetermined filtering rules; certain domains, certain
paths in the URL (/xxx-pictures/, /banner-ads/ ) etc. By setting up an
transparent proxy all web request can be filtered by the firewall
without the clients having to set a proxy server in their browser
settings, which also conveniantly prevents your users from disabling
that avenue. As a proxy two come to mind, squid which also functions as
a caching proxy, but can filter quite effectively as well. Download and
instructions to be had at http://squid.nlanr.net/
http://squid.nlanr.net/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-17.html#ss17.2 Gives instructions on
how to configure squid as a transparent proxy. To filtering of URLs is
done by adding a squidguard. http://www.squidguard.org/intro/
The second would be junkbuster, which more or less has the same features
as the above combination, without the cache. You can also use it to
block cookies and rewrite http headers, but that only works well in
your own network, not really well for multiple users. It was designed
to block banner ads and web tracking cookies. best place to get is:
http://www.waldherr.org/junkbuster/ which changes the banner ads into
transparent gif images.

Pete, thanks for the reply, but I do not see anything about peers. I
just figured out how to copy the ppp-logfile. It is as follows:

Subject: [Mandrake 7.2] "Mount Failed: Invalid Argument"
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 05:33:09 GMT
When trying to install Mandrake 7.2, with the boot disk I had created
in my floppy, and the Installation ISO disk I had burned from Linux-
Mandrake.Com's site in my CD-Rom, when it seems to be setting up the
next installation screen after "Initializing CD-Rom":
"Mount Failed: Invalid Argument"
So the message says that this should not happen, so it is stopping the
install, and you have to reboot.
*sigh* It sucks being a newbie again. :}
This system is a Pentium 166 MMX w/ 80 MB RAM:
C:\ 2 GB Drive (Win95)
D:\ 3.5 GB Drive (Currently Win95, but I wanted to put Mandrake here,
for a dual boot system... if I get it to ever install. ;})
E:\ Sony ATAPI CDU-511 16x (I -think- it is 16x) CD-Rom
A hint for diagnosing the problem, I found on the newbie@linux-
mandrake.com archive was to hit CTRL-ALT-(F3 thru F5) after the error,
and this resulted in finding, relating to the CD, when Mandrake was
trying to set up it was:
* Running the ide_probe.o, ide_probe.mod (Failed)
* Ran the cd_rom.o and ide_cd.o (Ran OK)
* Said that hdc: ATAPI 8x CD-Rom Drive, 128 kb cache
* At the very end of the process, it did tons of "Attempt to access
beyond the end of this device" errors.
* "VFS: Can't find an ext2 file system on dev ramdisk"
Uh, why would the ide_probe fail? Should it have been trying to mound
hdd as the CD-Rom? How can this be fixed? What is the average air-speed
velocity of an unladen swallow? ;}
Thank you for listening to me babble. ;}

I run an I7K and originally had 3.36 configured. Probably have the file
somewhere and will look it you need it. Easier solution upgrade to 4.01
using the Mandrake rpms. You'll have much better performance and if
you're using VMware, it now reads it very nicely - full screen resolution
w/o any problems. Email me if you want me to look for my old config
files.
