Subject: Error message at boot time.
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 14:16:03 +0800
Hi everyone!
I have RedHat 6.2 installed at my office computer which is also connected to
an ethernet network. At boot time, when starting the identd daemon, the
following error message appears:
Starting identd: eth0: link is unconnected, is down or incompatible. eth0 is
TP. [OK]
Can anyone pls tell me what this message means and how to remove it? And
does it has anything to do with the hostname on my RH machine? (I recently
set a new hostname for the machine. But it is not a FQDN (fully qualified
domain name.)
Another thing to mention is that there is certainly a ethernet connection up
and running. B'cos even though this message appears, I can still access the
Net and ping other machines in the network.
Yet another discovery I have made is that if I prevent identd daemon from
starting up at boot time by removing the identd startup script from
/etc/rc.d/init.d, the exact same error message now appears when the at
daemon is starting up.
Thanks.

Eureka!!
I finally managed to boot to Linux from the windows2000 boot menu. The problem
was solved when I downloaded a new version of LILO, installed it and run it.
RedHat 6.2 comes with version 21, which does not support a /boot partition above
sector 1024. I downloaded version 21-6.1 which does support it. I installed LILO
to my /dev/hdb6. It did say something about this not being my first drive, but
still continued. I copied the LILO boot sector (?) to a file (dd if=/dev/hdb6
bs=512 count=1 of=/linux.bin) and copied this file to my windows2000 partition,
booted it and it works!!
I'm so happy!!
Eric, thanks for all your advise.
Regards,
Dennis.

Subject: 2.4.0 & modules "not found"
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 07:02:26 GMT
I was able to compile and get 2.4.0 "running" BUT it is unable to find
and load the modules like the tulip, vfat, fat, msdos and some other
modules. Now, I did notice that when I did "make modules", I did notice
some "nothing to do for modules" and the "make modules_install" did not
return errors.
Looking at the /lib/modules/ I only see the pcima and I think the usb
directories and a "build" directory as a link to the /usr/src/linux-2.4.0.
Something went wrong somewhere....
Any hints on how to get the modules made and installed? The kernel is
working but no etho, no network and no "dos, vfat filesystems"..no
nothing...

o.k. to fix things do:
boot linux
switch from Gnome desktop to the console with CTRL+ALT+F1
log in as root with the root password and username
reconfigure X with either one of:
Xconfigurator (graphical X configurationtool)
xf86config (text based X configurationtool)
when that's done switch back to the gnome desktop with
ALT+F7
and then restart the Xserver and Gnome by using the key combo
CTRL+ALT+Backspace

You did do the required upgrades as mentioned in
../src/linux-2.4.0/Changes file? Notably
o binutils 2.9.1.0.25 # ld -v
o util-linux 2.10o # fdformat --version
o modutils 2.4.0 # insmod -V
You did select stuff as modules, did you not? Simply do a
"grep \=m ../src/linux-2.4.0/.config" to make sure. And you selected
support for modules? CONFIG_MODULES=y?

NT recognises FAT16 and NTFS partitions. All others might be
problematic.
But perhaps NT is smarter and doesn't look at the partition ID only,
like win9x.
show me your `fdisk -l /dev/hd[a-d]` listing. Then I might be able to
say more.

Then your booting an old LILO.
when you run lilo, it rewrites the bootcode.
This bootcode can be on anyplace you like.
the boot= option describes where.
If you now boot from the MBR, and try to put the new bootcode in a
partition,
you wouldn't see the changes.
Either put it in the MBR again, or clear the MBR first.

noauth Do not require the peer to authenticate itself.
This option is privileged if the auth option is specified in
/etc/ppp/options.
Mind you, I'm not a pppd habitueee, so I'd need to SEE your config file
and commandline options before commenting definitively. Take the above
as a suggestion for further investigation.
Oh ... and you "forgot" to turn on debugging in pppd, so the log is
not too useful at present. But thanks! I appreciate it.
What did you have to "figure out", btw? Surely it's just a grab with the

Subject: Linux on a Concerto with a Kingston PCMCIA card
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 08:45:24 GMT
Some relatives of mine were going to throw away an old Compaq Concerto
laptop. It has 20 megs of memory and a 250 meg HD. I ripped Windows
3.1 off of it and wanted to get Linux installed on it - hoping that
maybe I could use it as a remote telnet device. Anyways, I'm
attempting to install RedHat 6.1 on it (the 6.1 CDs happened to be
handy :) but so far I haven't had any luck. The main problem is that
it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive which means I would like to/need to
install via the net. Being a laptop it uses PCMCIA cards - so I booted
using the pcmcia.img boot image. The boot seems to go fine - when it
tries to configure the pcmcia cards the link light on the kingston's
dongle flickers and then stays on which leads me to believe that the
pcmcia system on the machine isn't totally foreign to linux. However,
when I plug it into my local lan and try to configure the net settings
via DHCP it doesn't work. I tried entering in values and it still
didn't work. The funny thing is, at no time during the installation
did it ask me to guess at a driver for the kingston (KNE PC2) card.
When I boot with bootnet.img it asks me for a driver to try - but this
time (using pcmcia.img) it didn't.
Does anybody have any ideas on what might be wrong or what I should try?
Thanks,
-Aaron

The error message is 'unable to read partition table'......maybe it
can't read one b/c there isn't one in the first place? (ie. there is no
