Hello!
Excuse my poor english. I hope you can understand me.
I have an ASUS A7V motherboard with an AMD Athlon.
The suspend function doesn't work, when I push the power button (less than
4 seconds) or type (as root) apm -s then I hear three shorts beeps and the
monitor go DPMS-OFF, but the CPU doesn't enter the suspend mode and after that
I can't wake up the computer (I move the mouse and I also press some keys, but
the monitor continues in DPMS OFF) and I have to restart it.
I have the apmd daemon running, but I see nothing in the systems logs when I
enter in suspend mode. When apmd starts I see the following lines in
/var/log/messages:
Jan 21 22:55:41 sol apmd[180]: Version 2.4 (APM BIOS 1.2, Linux driver 1.13)
Jan 21 22:55:41 sol apmd[180]: Battery: * * * (-1% 0:01)
In /proc/apm:
% cat /proc/apm
1.13 1.2 0x03 0x01 0xff 0x80 -1% -1 ?
I have a 2.2.18 kernel with the following options:
CONFIG_APM=y
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
# CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT is not set
# CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS is not set
# CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set
# CONFIG_TOSHIBA is not set
In the BIOS Setup I have:
Power Management: Min. Saving
Video Off OPtion: Suspend -> Off
Video Off Method: DPMS OFF
HDD Power Down: 15 min.
Suspend-to-RAM Capabyility: DISABLED
Suspend Mode: 40 min.
PWR Button < 4 secs: Suspend
Do you know what's wrong?
Thank you very much for your attention!

I put it there because the kernel said to add it before it died. I
didn't notice at first (until I sent the message out) that it was
already there

Matt,
OK, I see... your original note shows that.
My lilo.conf does not have that append line (since the line above
already performs that function). So, I thought it might be suspect.
Can you boot from a Linux boot floppy?

Did you follow this?
[root@linus /root]# dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
[root@linus /root]# mv /bootsect.lnx /dos/bootsect.lnx
Add this to your boot.ini:

It's very easy, but it seems you have previously installed StarOffice, if
not completely, at least partly. That's the reason why you only get the
option to deinstall, modify or repair an _existing_ installation.
First, you should uninstall StarOffice before going any further. Launch
the installation program and choose to uninstall. Then, start the
downloaded executable with the /net option, and the installation program
will guide you through the rest of the process.
When the installation ends, you will still unable to run StarOffice: you
must perform a user installation for each person you want to use it. Go to
the directory where StarOffice was installed (maybe under a bin/
subdirectory), and launch "setup" as the user you want to run StarOffice.

Other's have pointed to the uninstall procedure, but I'm going to
question the larger issue of using this machine for your purposes.
Doesn't a Quakeworld server take a fair bit of processing power? I would
wonder if a 486/66 is up to the task, especially if you put X on the
thing and have it eat up all your CPU and memory.
Just about any machine can handle DHCP service though.

Generally there are two places you need to look for documentation.
The first would be the documentation provided by the distribution you
use. That is mostly an installation guide, and an introduction to their
administration tools. Those differ quite a lot from distribution to
distribution, and are what you need to know to get started, or rather
what you'll first be confronted with. Look at the website of your
distribution of choice.
Second would be the HOWTO's collected by the linux documentation
project. Those are a collection of manuals which cover nearly every
subject under the open-source sun. A good start would be their website
at http://www.linuxdoc.org/

* http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO.html From

when I erased those lines.. it booted just fine to both linux and
windoze.. but i've trashed the partition and reainstalled slackware
from scratch and each time THAT shows up in lilo.conf.. maybe it's
just the way i install LILO i dunno..
the keyboard miracleulously works.. i dunno what was its problem
either..
now as far as the XF86Setup goes.. I did not see my video card geForce
Ultra 2 and the display was all garbage.. i'll have to look more into
that (refresh rates and all the other components)
thx for all the help,

Ps. which out of the groups that i've posted to would things like this
be most appropriate for? They all seem to have something to do with
linux and it's setup.. I'd like to get the majority of the audience

There is no error when system boots up, ypbind step just times out.
Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I just finished installing RedHat 7.0. Now, I'm trying to upgrade
Netscape to version 6. I downloaded the install program and it runs,
but it only gets partway through before it starts giving me grief. The
netscape-installer-bin program seems to end right after I choose which
components to install and click the "install" button, because the
program closes and in my term window it says:
"./netscape-installer: line 48: 17453 Broken pipe
./netscape-installer-bin --sync"
Anybody else have this trouble or know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Read the manual. A cron job is a .... SHELL script. So open the manpage
of sh and search for the cryptic 2>&1. Look and behold
man sh
/2>&1
...
REDIRECTION
Before a command is executed, its input and output may be
redirected using a special notation interpreted by the
shell. Redirection may also be used to open and close
files for the current shell execution environment. The
following redirection operators may precede or appear any-
where within a simple command or may follow a command.
Redirections are processed in the order they appear, from
left to right.
In the following descriptions, if the file descriptor num-
ber is omitted, and the first character of the redirection
operator is <, the redirection refers to the standard
input (file descriptor 0). If the first character of the
redirection operator is >, the redirection refers to the
standard output (file descriptor 1).
The word following the redirection operator in the follow-
ing descriptions, unless otherwise noted, is subjected to
brace expansion, tilde expansion, parameter expansion,
command substitution, arithmetic expansion, quote removal,
pathname expansion, and word splitting. If it expands to
more than one word, bash reports an error.
Note that the order of redirections is significant. For
example, the command
ls > dirlist 2>&1
directs both standard output and standard error to the
file dirlist, while the command
ls 2>&1 > dirlist
directs only the standard output to file dirlist, because
the standard error was duplicated as standard output
before the standard output was redirected to dirlist.
...
In other words it redirects the normal output, but also error messages
(most likely to /dev/null, as any output of o cronjob is mailed to it's
owner, and sysadmin don't really fancy mail from their cronjobs.)
