Hi all Linux Gurus,
I've got a web server hosted by an ISP, this linux box runs Debian 2.2
r0 Potato.
This linux box must be a server for my Java/CORBA application, so I must
upgrade the JDK from 1.1.8 to 1.2.2 or 1.3. Using debian packages (.deb)
I would be obliged to upgrade my libc from glibc 2.1.13 to 2.2.1. I'm a
little bit afraid !!!!
So is it possible to install this library release keeping my old version
? Or have you done such process ? With which results ?

Thanks for all tricks
Take care
Jerome

I know in windows 2000, there is a command (recovery console) called fixMBR.
I think it should be similar to what you said fdisk /MBR. But I don't know
whether it will recover the harddrive based on current partition or some old
information. Any of you know which is the case?
Another question, Can I put saved MBR linux info (file) to other hard
drives? How can I do this?

thanks,
coolwonder

Hi,

You must edit the /etc/ftpaccess file and add your user to the
restricted-uid line. This sould prevent him from going UP his home dir with
ftp.

Why would you want to restore it?

I assume win2k on hda and linux on hdb, although is not really relevant
If you are unsure on what to do, post `fdisk -l /dev/hd[a-d]` and `cat
/etc/lilo.conf`

add to lilo.conf:

others=/dev/hda1
       label=win2k
       table=/dev/hda

and run /sbin/lilo -v

reboot and at the liloprompt choose win2k.

Or if you insist on having the NT loader as the main bootloader,
try /sbin/lilo -u (read the manpage)

No, not as good. Tar Handles File Acess|Modify times not good,
Tar has got problems with special Files (dev, proc, pipes, fifo, etc)

Better is to use find & cpio like this:
find / -not -ipath '/mnt/newsys' | cpio -pdmv /mnt/newsys

"-not -ipath '/mnt/newsys'" makes sure not to copy it's destination.

Subject: gnucash/g-wrap/guile problem

hello,

does anyone have a filed called require.scm that belongs to the
slib/guile 1.4 package?

I downloaded gnucash. I had to end up downloading g-wrap as well. Then I
got errors
during 'make' for g-wrap about a .scm file. I thought i had to get a new
version of guile as that's the package that has other scm files. I
downloaded guile 1.4 but I
still don't have the file I need to 'make' g-wrap which is needed by
gnucash.

Can someone send the file to my email or tell me where I can get it
since it wasn't included with guile? I got other scm files in the ice-9
directory, which is where slib is but not require.scm.

Thanks
Brandon

uh well first I don't think you are supposed to use DHCP with PPP. They
are 2 different protocols. When and if you connect with PPP you will
automatically get an IP from your ISP w/o needing to have DHCP handle
that for you and why would you place that IP in resolv.conf anyway? The
only things that need to go in that file are the IPs of your DNS
server(s).

As for the actual connection problem try using minicom from the console
to see what strings are sent from your ISP so that you can tell chat
what to expect/send in response.

It looks like u are sending your password at the wrong time and b/c of
that the remote server thinks it's the incorrect response based on the
prompt it provides you at that time...but i could be reading your output
incorrectly.

I've got 2x20giggers on an IWILL RAID Controller, usings RAID LEVEL 1. The
iwill has an hpt366 chipset.

Now linux detects each drive individually, on the hpt366 ide controller, but
its not meant to. I can seem to get it to detect on single 40gig drive...
any ideas?

OK.

Step 1) Edit /etc/lilo.conf
Look for the line like "boot=/dev/hda"
Change the "hda" part to the partiton where your linux
root partition is, somethinf like "boot=/dev/hda6" for example

     2) Rerun lilo to put the boot sector in place.

     3) Using some windows boot disks, run "fdisk /mbr" to put
         the MS boot sector back

     4) Boot into Win2000. Get on the net and hunt for a program
called "bootpart". This is the easy way to add an entry
for Linux to your Win2000 boot menu.

Try the "p" option to tar.

It does not. I promise you .. I do all my machine copies this way.

To be frank, this maybe will work but it is a bit of overkill, and the
cpio options as always are incomprehensible. Don't you need to take
them into, and the out of, cpio format somewhere in taht pipe!

Why would one? Oh, I see.

Anyway, the canonical incantation for tar is

   tar cpvlfC - / . | tar xpvlfC - /mnt

but there was noting wrong with "cp" or "rsync" either!

I've posted before on this topic. I am using GNOME, and I am setting my

I have tried xset and also adding DPMS in Monitor section of

The Red Hat installer is not the best there is. I use to do:

1. Boot Red Hat with 'text expert'
2. Select 'Custom' installation
3. Select fdisk as the partitioning tool
4. On an empty disk, create a small (8 - 16 MB) Linux partition for /boot
5. If needed, create a FAT primary partition for Windows C:
6. Create an extended partition
7. Create other Linux partitions as logical disks inside ext partition
(swap, /, maybe a separate for /var and another for /home)

There is a catch in the extended partition: if it is intended to place
Windows FAT32 logical disks in it, change the type to 0x0f (Extended FAT32).

After writing the partition table, abort the installation.

If Windows is to be installed, boot with a Windows boot diskette (you have
one?) and format the Windows C: partition (otherwise the Windows installer
tends to destroy the work just done). Install Windows.

Boot Red Hat installation and install the system you like. Remember to tell
the installer the proper partition configuration and mount points and
remember to format the new partitions. You should make a boot disk: if
something goes awry with LILO the boot disk is worth its weight in gold.
Include the Windows partition in the LILO configuration so you can select
whether to boot Linux or Windows.

Good luck!

If you have an access to another computer running Linux and which you can
set up a LAN connection with, you could use the network installation: set
the ISO image in the helper computer using the loop option in mount and give
it out as a NFS network disk share.

The only limitation is to have a friend with a running Linux and the network
connections.
