Tom, thanks for the response. I've just tried a reinstallation and
everything works fine now - I've no idea why LILO failed the previous
times...

Hi,

I am looking for a fax program that can simply send/receive faxes.
I have looked at Hylafax, but it seems to be an overkill.
Could someone suggest other packages that is EASY to configure
and use ?
I am running Slackware if that matters.

Thanks a million.

Look for them. They're on your machine.

No, there aren't more than three gross, and I presume you will
feel much more inclined to read one called the Linux-FAQ than one called
the footscratching-howto!

So use your nonce, instead of asking people to tell you the obvious.
Go to www.linuxnewbie.org if you prefer to read stuff on the web aimed
at people who can't spin a metaphorical screwdriver yet.

Personally, I'd plump for the Linux-HOWTO.

Does this really mean that each packet with the IP address x.x.80.110,
for some arbitrary x, 0<=x<=255, must go through the PPP interface ppp1?
In the setup above only packets bound for 47.131.80.12 will go through
that interface.

Are you dialing just one machine or 64 different machines, each using
the remote IP 47.131.80.12?

We need to know what you really need to do and I, for one, am still
confused about that.

Well, seems the check of the return values fails here, in most case this
happens because the binary file "test" (man 1 test) is not installed on
the system (but in this case ./configure should have stopped with an
error) or is not the right one (i.e. a simply test script which does
something completly differant than comparing values). What does "whereis
test" say?

Second, did ./configure detected correctly NAI uvscan version 4.x?
./configure shows, which version has been detected or simply look in
/usr/sbin/scanmails for uvscan_version (is either "3" or "4").

I'm configuring my Toshiba 205CDS laptop for sound support. It apparently
has an ess688 sound card. It works just fine, but I can only play 8 bit
stereo 11 KHz sound files. Any higher bitrates and the CPU gets pegged and
the sound is broken.

My theory here is that there is a "native" bitrate that the sound chip
handles, and the files that I am playing need to be converted to the native
bitrate, and that is what the CPU is doing.

Any theories here? Here's my modules.conf file:

alias net-pf-4 ipx
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq

Hi,

I'm having trouble compiling RH 7 kernel 2.2.17-14.

It craps out saying:

I don't know. Nor did I try to imply that they did.
I was merely stating a fact.

If you want the latest lilo and use it, here are the steps you do:

1) Install your system to boot from a floppy or loadlin
2) Download the latest lilo, build it, install it
3) Run the latest lilo you just installed
4) Boot from the hard drive using the new lilo no matter where your
boot partion is on the drive.

Yes, I see what you mean. There are actually limitations in both places,
the LILO and the BIOS. You must have both up to date.

I'm using Mandrake 7.2.

When I use rpmdrake or mandrake update to do remote installs of RPMs, I'm
finding that it manages to find the package and then, as often as not, goes
into some sort of wild infinite loop (and takes up all resources so I can't
even shut it down easily).

So far the only "solution" is to hit the reset button ... I can't even get
the machine's attentionto to a proper shutdown.

I'm connecting over a DSL service using pppoe (Bell Canada DSL). That
seems to work fine.

Any hints greatly appreciated.

Now, while I boot Linux, the kernel is loaded and I see

Subject: CUPS - gnerating PDF
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 20:57:16 +0100

Can anybody help me to generate PDF files using CUPS?

I've been trying to set this up for about a month, and get to the point
where I think I almost get it working, but I can't find any output PDF
file when I print the test page. I find a PostScript file in
/var/spool/cups/ but that's all...

I've ploughed through the documentation, but I can't find any useful
information about setting up what might be called a "virtual printer"...
devices are always described as being attached to a hardware port
(usually the parrallel port). The distiller driver seems to be present,
when I choose it from the configuration interface I see a file
/etc/cups/ppd/distiller.ppd appear. So what do I need to specify as the
device? I've tried setting device to Disk file; it then asks me to
specify a Device URI. I've tried specifying /var/spool/cups (thinking it
wanted an output location for the PDF) and I've tried specifying
/etc/cups/ppd/distiller.ppd (thinking it wanted the driver location,
strange). Neither works.

The example given in the interface is "file:/path/to/filename.prn" Now,
this looks to me like the name of a printer output file for Windows
NT... but I can find files on my Linux box like
"/usr/share/doc/ghostscript-5.50/Lexmark7xxx_57xx_Z51/stairsc.prn" but
this looks like a red herring, too.

I've tried the command line, too... Here's how far I get in the config:

lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: distiller
device for distiller: /etc/cups/ppd/distiller.ppd
distiller accepting requests
printer distiller disabled -
Unable to open parallel port device file: No such file or directory
distiller-6 root 55296 Sun Feb 11 20:47:05

Any help greatly appreciated.
