If your DOS/Windows partition is /dev/hda1, you need to mount that
partition in order to access it. For example:
mount -tvfat /dev/hda1 /mnt
No guarantees that is going to work, it is just an example. But, if
the mount command doesn't complain (you need to do that as root, by
the way), then you should be able to get a listing of what you call
C:\ by doing 'ls /mnt/'.

Do you have gpm running as well? I recently brought up a
testing/unstable machine, and had some mouse problems. Gpm had
configured the mouse for use under text mode before any X stuff looked
at the mouse for GUI mode. Gpm had set things up such that it was
reading the "true" device (/dev/psaux), and then making a "repeater"
available on /dev/gpmdata. No matter what I did, I couldn't get X to
behave with the mouse set to /dev/mouse or /dev/gpmdata. However,
telling X that /dev/psaux was the mouse, did work. I don't know if
gpm works under text mode, I don't use it.

Hi,
I'm setting up a Slackware 7.1 box using an ATI Expert2000 video card.
Using the config programs for graphics cards I can't get a combination
that will run when I execute startx. Either I get a black screen or a
lot ot text followed by a broken x server connection. I'm using
(eventually) the KDE windowing system and the monitor is a Smasung
17GLsi. Can anyone give me a hand or config file for this graphics
card? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good news: Sony CRX140 works fine with cdrecord.

It's all described in cdwriting HOWTO, but anyway. You have to
reconfigure the kernel. You disable IDE/ATAPI cdrom and enable SCSI
emulation support. You can't enable both.

Subject: Solved - slow xinetd service connection
Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 10:33:03 -0600
History:
I installed RH7 and activated imap. Checking mail from work (behind a
firewall), imap connections took 45-60 seconds to establish, and then
after a few minutes, dropped. I had to re-establish the connection, and
it again took 45-60 seconds. I thought it was a DNS issue, but all
hosts could resolve each other forward and backwards.
A co-worker was working a similar issue with sendmail, and we discovered
the problem was that the server was trying to do an ident lookup. Since
I was behind a firewall, this took 45-60 seconds to timeout before I
could get to my mail.
The solution is to set up an ipchains rule on the server, blocking
outbound ident lookups:
Kernel 2.2.x with ipchains:
ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 113 -j REJECT
Kernel 2.4.x with iptables:
iptables -i OUTPUT -p tcp -d 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 113 -j REJECT
Hope this helps.

I've got that card on my home system. You don't mention which version
of XFree86 you have (not familiar with Slackware). In theory, the ATI
Rage128 cards (that's the chipset on your card) work on XFree86 3.3.6,
but in practice I found that I needed XFree86 4.0.1 for reasonable
success ... Email me privately if you want a config file for that.
Dave.
P.S. Apologies for the spam-trapped headers - they are added by my

The difference between running in cron and when you run from a login is
that the login has environment variables set. Depending on which shell
you use and I guess the getty used to log you in you pick from various
files. The /etc/profile can be run for all logins and if your are using
bash for your shell it runs .bashrc (don't forget the dot before the
name). Other shells such as sh and ksh use .profile (again a dot before
the name).
Another problem is that cron may be using a different shell than you have
as your default shell. The seventh field of /etc/passwd for your login
has the shell you will be loged into. Run your shell in the cron and use
webalizer as the command for the shell to run to be sure you are getting
the correct shell in the cron.

OK... I'm going to follow up my own post as noone else seems to have a
clue about it and see if this extra hint helps...
My application is fired up by scripts in rc.d using "open" so as it
opens in a new console window. I have just noticed that pressing the UK
Sterling symbol in this window results in the pound sign being correctly
displayed.
Also if I'm quick enough between typing exit and the next login prompt
appearing I can make a pound symbol appear there too.
BUT As soon as the login prompt appears, and from then on, I cannot get
pound symbols at all (sorry, in case this isn't clear, I can still get
them in the other console windows).
Anyone? Anywhere? Any ideas? What extra processing is performed by the
shell that could possibly be filtering out this single character from
the keymap? I have been using the ash shell and have also tried bash but
neither makes a difference.

OK, you named two partitions here, not drives. Drives would be
hda and hdb. Is that what you really mean?

Do you mean hda has a single Win98 partition on it (FAT32)
which is hda1?

Do you mean hdb has 4 to 5 partions? What are they and what
are their names (hdb1, hdb4, etc)? Do you mean something specific
by "odd" partitions? Which one has the FAT partition?
Is it FAT or FAT32?

How does Linus feel about this? Doesn't he get dizzy spinning

Once you get the nomenclature in order (what the partitions
are really called) this should be easy.
If you have a properly formatted FAT32 or FAT partition on your
slave drive (which I assume is your hdb), then Win98 should simply
see it when it boots up, probably as drive D:
Under Linux, if you have VFAT support compiled into the kernel,
you should be able to mount your Win98 partition as well as the
FAT or FAT32 partition on the slave drive (hdb) as a VFAT file
system.
If, for example, the VFAT partition is called /dev/hdb5, then the
command would be:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdb5 /mount_point
Or whatever your "mount_point" is.

Debian and Slackware both have small basic installations that
can be done from floppies. The CDROM distributions have floppy
images that you can copy to floppy from either linux or windows (using
rawrite). Once you get the basic installation, you can add the other
packages you need (off the net, by PPP or NFS from a machine with a
cdrom, by putting the files on floppies, whatever). Both of these are
very well supported distributions.
Other alternatives are to look for linux on a floppy
distributions (like mulinux or loaf) and adding the programs you want
by hand.

Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/proc.txt and look for the /proc/fs
stuff. This is part of the kernel source.
