Subject: Ipchains/subnet problem??
Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 05:49:30 GMT
I just subnetted my network with a Cisco 1605R sitting between my
192.168.1 and 192.168.2 networks. I can hit the machines on each
network themselves fine. However, I am having a problem pinging
computers on the "Other" network (either direction). Could this be a
problem with my firewall?? I am running ipchains. When I try to ping
across the router from windows it just times out, but from Linux I get
"ping: Sendto: Operation not permitted"
"ping: wrote 192.168.2.2 64 chars, ret=-1"
Where should I look to correct this?? My routing tables on the linux
box (internet connection/firewall/masq) and the router look ok, but
I'm willing to look again.
Any ideas...please??

I'm trying to use Debian's apt-get through a WinGate proxy. It seems to be
connecting fine when I run 'apt-get update', but once it's downloaded the
index file it tries to spawn gzip, which bombs out with the error "stdin: not
in gzip format". I've tried downloading the index files by hand through the
same proxy (with lynx) and they come through as gzip files just fine.
My first and only thought was that WinGate was doing some sort of CR/LF
mangling on the files before it passed them on, but this doesn't seem to be
the case since lynx can get them fine. Does anybody have a suggestion of
what apt-get's http method might be doing that would make it fail here?

Hello,
IMHO not, the kernel will perfectly take care of unloading modules
himself, if your memory gets to low,
otherwise they will stay in memory with state (autoclean).

Heh. A closer look shows that it's not all the index files which are doing
this: just the ones from http://http.ca.debian.org. And a closer look at the
mirror list shows that it's supposed to be, bizarrely, http://ftp.ca.debian.org.
This is just a bad error message. Ignore me.

I've installed Mandrake 7.2 with CUPS 1.4. (security level=3Dmedium)
During installation all seems working fine: test page are printed, etc...
When Mandrake ask me if I whish LPD or CUPS I set CUPS
Once rebooted Linux... nothing!
- Kups displays the message "can't connect to cups server. Check your options!"
- /etc/printcap & cupsd.conf seem good.
- status of cupsd is "running"
- The error_log shows some errors like :
Listening from 0000000:631
E [blah] ... network unreachble... browsing stopped ...
and so on...
- Some intuitive manipulations to cupsd.conf does not reach any result.
- Web admin tool at port 631 works, but it doesn't display "no printers" installed
- If I try url http://localhost:631/printers/okipage, it shows my "okipage" info such
as it is correctly installed and it correctly prints the test page.
- XPP doesn't show any printer on the combo above.
- A W98 workstation on my small network area (2 pc) can view (by Samba) the printer
and can send a test page to it. But spooling file rests archived in /var/spool/samba
and non sent to printer.
Is this a puzzle with any solution? It seems it doesn't recognize printers installed,
but when I "force" the name on address row in its web admin tool, it works.
Can you help me?
Thanks.

How would this solve anything?
/boot will still be above cyl. 1024, and DiskDruid will stilll complain.
fdisk /mbr just reinstalls the DOS bootcode, which means as much as:
boot from the active partition.
The best thing to do: shrink C: and make a /boot at the start of the HDD.

Appearantly your Xserver cannot find a modeline for the 24 bits colordepth

Hi,
I downloaded the updates for rh7 - gcc, glibc,
etc. & replaced the old ones with the new ones on
the ftp server. Now when I do a network install
through ftp, the installer goes upto the stage of
installing the rpms. Then it fails because it
tries to look for the old glibc-2.1.92 rpm
Which files do I have to modify for the installer
to look for the new glibc(and other packages) ? I
looked through the netstg1.img & netstg2.img. But
none of the files inside these had a reference to
the particular version of glibc.
Please help.

On UNIX you should type:
for bash/sh "TOMCAT_HOME=foo/tomcat ; export TOMCAT_HOME"
for tcsh "setenv TOMCAT_HOME foo/tomcat"
But it return an error msg said "bash: syntax error near unexpected token

That's what dependencies are for (and you can have multiple versions of a
given library installed at the same time).

Yes, well, to nitpick, he didn't say "need" and he appears to know what
he is talking about in general :-). I daresay he just wants to reduce
clutter in the case that these installs are really not necessary for
the system, thus simplifying whatever problem the OP is facing and
aiding diagnosis.

I also have an ad1816, so here the way how I got it working.
The sndconfig program doesn't show the io=0x500, so you need to
manually configure the soundcard.
In the /etc/conf.modules:
alias sound ad1816
pre-install sound /sbin/insmod sound dmabuf=1
options ad1816 io=0x500 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=3 ad1816_clockfreq=33000

I'm not sure if a reboot is required, however if doing so, you will

It sounds like you are hearing the drive doing 'thermal recalibrations'
a euphamism for the random seeks you hear them do from time to time as
they warm up, they are updating the cylinder position tables so they can
hit the center of a track more accurately when seeking. I have 5 WD
drives here all told, and they'll do it incessantly every few seconds
until the temperatures have stabilized. As they run 24/7/365, that was
months ago, and things are fairly quiet now.
Cheers, Gene
