Subject: HELP: Random lockups with loopback encryption...
Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 09:16:08 GMT

Hi,

I recently set up a 2GB loopback encrypted filesystem on my SuSE 7.1 installation
and everything went just fine following the HOWTO. I initialized the encrypted
file with /dev/urandom, used losetup to initialize the file (using XOR for now,
for testing/experimentation, probably twofish later), and set up /etc/fstab
to automount the encrypted partition on boot.

All in all everything works fine, except that when I try to do large file copies,
such as e.g. moving 1+GB of data over to the encrypted partition, I get random
lockups of my entire machine. No OOPS, no kernel panics, nothing. Just solid
lockup requiring a hard reboot. I've looked at all the log files that might
be relevant, but cannot see anything indicative of the problem.

My config is:

Sony Vaio PCG-C1VN (with Crusoe processor)
SuSE 7.1 with 2.4 stock kernel
175 MB RAM, no swap partition

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Patrick Stickler

I have made a copy of a windows 98 installation on hda1 with dd, in
order to change a previous installation of windows 98 on the same device
which had get a bad virus.

The result is that I can't boot windows with grub now.

I can mount /dev/hda1 with linux, as usual and I can see and operate in
the disk C: if I use a dos floppy disk.

I made a new installation of grub, but till now I am unable to boot
windows.

Is there a solution?

Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself correctly. The situation with other
UNIXes I know of is that you don't need to recompile the (ORACLE)
kernel when you change the SHMMAX. But you still need to
re-compile/re-link the UNIX kernel!

the switch end should tell you status lights will show the speed of the
link, and whether it is full or half duplex.
if it is a hub, of course it is half duplex. if it is a 100MB hub, the hub
end should show you the speed.

Subject: Win2k and Linux install on Sony Z600TEK - WITH LILO?
Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 11:45:35 +0100

Hi!

I have just purchased a nice, nifty Sony Z600TEK. Great little machine that
caem with 128MB and a 20GB drive with 2 FAT32 partitions of 12GB and 8GB
(haven't checked to see if there are other hidden partitions).
It came with Win2000Pro installed.

Now, *before* I got it, I had a nice little Dell laptop with Win98 and dual
booting to Linux RH7. I loved being able to dual boot despite the thing
weighing as much as an anchor.

Having read over the HOWTOs on installing Linux to Win2k (WinNT), I am
seriously sweating as I tend to use my laptops for a lot of experimental
kernal stuff (ie. change the LILO often) and wondering if there is a way to
actually install Linux which uses LILO in the MBR and *doesn't* mess up the
Win2k boot loader and such. It absolutely needs to have Win2k on it and I
really need it to dual boot.

Anyone got any ideas? The idea of recopying the boot.ini each time I change
the LILO for Linux (which I do quite often) is not appealing. I trust LILO,
I don't know if I trust the NT/Win2k boot loader. Anyone care to comment?

Any help appreciated!
Daryl.

Hi:

I am currently running Windows ME, Windows 2000 Advance Server and Red
hat Linux 7. Just wondering how can I make NT loder to boot Linux as well?

I have try to use dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
command and then copy the bootsect.lnx into C: (where boot.ini is) But
when I select Linux from the NT loder, it just give me a blank screen.

Have I miss something during the process? I am new to Linux.

The setup look like this, I fresh install Windows ME first, and then use
Partition Magic to divide the partition into NTFS , Linux Ext2 , and
Linux swap. After that I install Windows 2000, and then NT loder shows
both the ME and windows 2000. After that I insert Red Hat Linux 7, and
fresh install Linux into the Linux native (hda6). After I finish all
the OS, then I use boot disk created during linux setup, and login as
root. then I type dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 and
see 1+0 input, 1+0 output (something like that). and use mcopy
/bootsect.lnx A: to copy bootsect into a FAT disk. finally I copy the
bootsect.lnx into C:\ (where boot.ini is), and type c:\bootsect.lnx =
"Linux 7" into boot.ini, and then reboot, and I found nothing happend
when I select Linux 7. What's happening here? can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Well.. It is not absolutely neccessary on linux either, but if there
is a conflict, recompilation is only solution. :(

You MIGHT consider a 3rd party boot manager such a PowerQuests Boot Magic
(works for me) or System Commander (mooted to be good, but I haven't used
it) They both reside in the MBR (or at least, thats how I visualise them)

I use dual boot betwixt RH6.2 and Win98 using Boot Magic. After the boot
magic prompt, I get a lilo prompt set to a very low delay (so I can get at
it if ever I need it) but a delay of 0 also works.

As I understand it, lilo is always needed to get linux up, but it can be
installed in the same partition as linux itself. Which is what I've done.
Boot magic then points to the linux parttion is all hunky-dorey.

Only problem I've found when messign round with kernels is that lilo.conf
needs "repairing" - I get around this by using a bootable floppy.

I dunno if anyone has got a more aesthetic solution........

I've deleted the existing boot partition and moved the Windows partition
using a partition utility.

I now need to recreate the boot partition so upon booting into Linux using
my *emergency* boot disk I get an error saying that /dev/hda2 can't be
mounted as /boot which is correct as I've deleted it as mentioned before. I
can get to a shell prompt though and am able to create a new partition at
the *start* of the disk. I've given it an id of 83 (Linux) and toggled on
it's bootable flag.

What do I do now? I guess I need to put a filesystem on the disk together
with the kernel files. I've tried using 'mke2fs -t ext2 /dev/hda2' but this
complains of 'bad blocks count'.

Wayne.

Yeah, that's kind of the problem actually. I have an external floppy and
would prefer not to carr the sucker around to boot Linux.

Also, while your solution works with Win98 (the same thing worked for me,
but I let LILO have the MBR, it's a nicer solution)... I don't believe it'll
work with Win2K since it takes over the MBR for its bootloader and doesn't
like it when you don't use it.

I figure someone must have found a way to "nudge" Win2K out of the MBR and
still get it to boot, as well as getting Linux to work. I was just wondering
if anyone could tell me.

There is the WinNT way to do it, but involves changing the boot.ini each
time you boot up, which I can tell will cause lot sof problems for me as I
change the LILO frequently depending on wat I'm doing.

ciao, but thanks!
Daryl.
