Hi,
I've just reinstalled the RH 6.2 distribution (again). I've repartitioned my
h/d so that the boot partition is the first on the disk which gets me round
the 1024 cylinder problem.
When I now boot into Linux I am presented with the graphical login screen.
The display seems to flicker more than it does under Windows and am not sure
what to do about it. The monitor I have is a Tatung (model C5BZR) which was
detected by the installation by 'auto probe'. I overrode the Hz settings
from 30 - 70 to 50 - 60Hz which is what it says on th eback of the monitor.
I am asking this question because a while ago a monitor I had stopped
working. It was under warranty so was replaced with no problem. I guess I'm
a bit paranoid....
Any help would be great.
Wayne.

It's a good way to avoid responses.
`cat /etc/fstab`
Will probably show that you're not allowed to mount floppy/cdrom etc.
Either that or the devices are not accesible for you (ls -l /dev/fd0 eg.)

that depends.
Tools like partition magic wil fail on that disk I suppose.
But if you never plan to do anything else with that disc,
you should be fine. Other OS's will not be able to understand
that disc, and may mess it up, so if you have ie. windows installed
things are a bit different.
If nothing is on that disc yet, I would start over, and partition it first.
Just make one big partition, essential nothing different from what
you've done now, but it is better practice.

Yeah all these numbers tend to get a bit confusing.
The 50-60 Hz most likely refers to the power net frequency, which is 50 Hz
in Europe, 60 Hz in the US. This monitor can handle both.
It has nothing to do with the scan frequencies.
Change them back

Hi all
Two points:
1. Has anyone managed to configure this modem with Redhat ?
2. The PC i am running linux on does not have a USB port. If I buy a
standard PCI-USB card, will Redhat linux support the USB ports ? Could
someone with same configuration let me know...

Thanks a bunch, I'm an idiot with limited time...two strikes against me.
Next stoopid question. My 'iconized' windows disappear...that is, they go
somewhere I can't retrieve. They are not on the panel at the bottom, and
there is no 'icon box' in the panel that holds them. I assume this is as easy
to fix as my last question, but once again I can't find it. The 'help' system
seems more useless that a typical Bill Gates app...scary.
Thanks,
Jeff

Because the fscking installer script on the cd is useless with a
non-corel box stock release of linux. Specificly, it checks the kernel
version, gets the wrong response from uname, and then goes nuts making
empty directories in '/' but failing to put anything in them because the
kernel version isn't to their liking.
Yeah, I bought it at list price, 2 weeks later it was down to 10 bucks.
Worthless POS, and several messages to corel have gone unanswered.
If I was a lisp programmer, I might try to re-write that script to make
it work, but lisp is one language I've never been able to fathom.
Corel, even in their linux enthusiast days, couldn't seem to get away
from the mentality of haveing the whole install under their control, and
if the system install wasn't to their liking, why it must be a pie-rat
copy or something. Frankly, I'm not amused.

I have no clue what the implications of this are, but I would expect that
running /sbin/lilo would change any differnces.
Did you have conflicting ID's ?
Did you perhaps not terminate the chain correctly?

Is that all?
then fake it.
make a small private uname script that gets executed instead, and let
it return what the installer expects. It may be dangerous though, if you
must run
this installation as root, I wouldn't try this.
I just downloaded WP8 a long time ago and installed it on my RH6 system
No problems found, but that was a while ago, CorelLinux didn't exist yet
then IIRC
I never really used it though.

While I do not consider myself an "all knowing computer god," I *have*
been professionally involved in computing for about 25 years now and have
in that time have worked with many, many different computer architectures
and operating systems from mainframes and minis to microcomputers and
embedded systems.
IBM-compatible PCs running Windows are by far the worst of the lot.
Linux does have a way to go before it is friendly enough for today's
typical (I'll say "non-technical" rather than "clueless") user, but from
the standpoint of efficiency, flexibility, and reliability vs. Windows,
it's no contest.

On my system there's a file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors
(Your monitor does not appear to be in there though)
Check www.xfree86.org and follow links until you find a database.
Check the website of your monitor's manufacturer.
go to www.google.com and try to find info about your monitor.
go to the shop where you bought it, and ask them for the information.
It's all up to you now.

IIRC, there was a bit of a driver mix-up in the boxed version, the
download version is always better.
either way, there are two 8139 drivers out there. One is written by

This is not NT. You don't need to do this. Just run fsck while it's up
and if it reports any problems, THEN do a reboot.
You can even have cron run it and email you the results if you like.
But *nix OS's don't need (and some would argue, shouldn't) be rebooted
that often. And the main reasons are 1) it doesn't need to be, and 2)
exactly the experience you're citing.
