Thanks. I tried that procedure, though I burned DAO so the finalising
point was moot.

Seems to have worked fine except that my CD drive is too old to read the
disk well.

Does the RH installer retry failed reads from the CD ? If so I'll
probably get away with it.

Is this box connected to others in your home? Or does the network card
go out to your ISP?

Either way, you're probably going to need to know answers to the rest of
your questions ;-)

Probably. Even if this box is stand-alone, but it connects to the internet,
it's best to get it set up right.

> Info like the IP address,

Probably 192.168.1.1 would do... This is from the private class C block.

Other computers in your home would be 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, etc..

Your default gateway should be set up automagically each time you
connect, *when* you get pppd set up properly ;-)

This should come from your isp; you may need to set it up in the script that
fires-off pppd, or you may set it permanently in /etc/resolv.conf

You have a dynamic IP, just like I do at home, and just like many people do.

Maybe. In that case, try specifying IRQs for each in the BIOS. If they
already are, try having the BIOS set them up automatically. Try setting
your BIOS for PnP compatible OS and for PnP OS incompatible.

Try a bunch of stuff, but keep track of it so you can go back if something
doesn't fix the problem. If you don't figure it out, post the relevant
file in your /proc directory that lists what devices are on what IRQ.

A statement of absolutely frightening naivete..

The popular myth is that crackers are trying to steal your VISA card
numbers,
and your tax records.

Most often crackers are trying to steal your hardware to use in DoS
attacks on other, bigger fish.

If you don't care about yourself, at least try to break through your
unconcern and see that it may be wise to think about others.

Ok. I have a HPLaser Jet 8000 DN (with duplexer) And I want to know if there
are print commands in Linux (RedHat) that enable you to print plain text on
both sides of the paper (utillizing the duplexer).

The general idea with separate partitions is that something bad happening
on one cannot overflow onto another, very simply put...

If you where to get some bizarre situation going on in /tmp that could
fill up /tmp, but that's the end of it.

Well.. bad news.

You are going to *have* to get "..interested in the mechanics of Linux.."
if, as *you* say:

There's no way you're going to be able to do that without learning quite
a bit about Linux.

What's so bad about learning something, anyway?

At the very least, a root /, a /boot, a /usr, a /home, a /tmp, a /var, a swap..

I dunno: it becomes a religious issue..

Subject: Setting up Linux Firewall: Please help
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 16:39:37 -0500

Hello all,

I want to setup ipchains firewall using RedHat 7 on an x86 box. The
firewall will be tri-homed with 3 network interfaces:

1: Internal: eth0 (IP=192.168.1.1)
2. DMZ: eth1 (IP=n.n.n.3)
3. External: eth2 (IP=n.n.n.2)

The router connected to the Internet has an IP=n.n.n.1
Where n.n.n.0 is a class C network

Here is what I'm trying to setup:

                      Switch--------(Internal host)
                         |
                         |
                       eth0
 Router--- ----eth2 ( Firewall)
                       eth1
                         |
                         |
                      Switch--------(DMZ host)

---- means straight-through cable

Interface config files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts looks like:

DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
ONBOOT=yes

DEVICE=eth1
IPADDR=n.n.n.3
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes

DEVICE=eth2
IPADDR=n.n.n.2
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes

The file /etc/sysconfig/network looks like:

NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=fwhost
GATEWAY=n.n.n.1

I'm sure I have not setup these interfaces properly and I will
appreciate any help with this. Also once this is done, is there any good
script for setting up ipchains at boot? I've read FIREWALL and IPCHAINS
HOWTO but still can't figure how to do this. Also how do I identify
which interface is eth0, eth1, eth2 physically?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

NVIdia has posted new drivers on their site. Has anybody tried them out yet?
I had to turn off 3D accel. of my GeForce 2MX card, for my system to run
stabile. Otherwise I couldn't return to my console after a short while (i.e.
after loggin in and out again), because my screen freezes then or my system
crashes completely.
Does anybody know if this problem has been solved for the SuSE 7.1
distribution with kernel 2.2.18 or 2.4.

We have the same printer at work. While I didn't fully implement
full duplexing under Linux (if I full duplex print then I want booklets
which is not that easy), but here is a solution which I got from usenet.

We are using a QMS printer capable of printing duplex, booklet and other
modes. To switch the printer into any of these modes I use a little script
as filter to prepend the postscript file with the appropriate command.

This is from the /etc/printcap:
===============================================
qmsdup|dup:\
        :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/dup:\
        :if=/usr/local/bin/duplex
# the 'duplex' script sends the printjob to qms
===============================================
qms|lp:\
        :lp=:rm=min012:\
        :rp=min012:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd:\
        :mx#0
===============================================

and this is the filter script from /usr/local/bin:

===============================================
#!/bin/sh
# filter to switch printer to duplex mode
sed -e '
1i\
%!\
%%IncludeFeature: duplex \(on\)\
%%End Comments' | lpr -Pqms
===============================================

The 'sed' command inserts the line 'IncludeFeature: duplex(on)\' after the
first line in the printfile. The ( and ) have to be escaped by \.
Then the file is sent to the printer.

We're trying to do a network install of Redhat7 on a dell 5000e with a
Xircom RealPort Combo Card, which uses the tulip driver for its network
side. The problem is, the bootnet.img supplied by Redhat doesn't include
the right driver for the card, and we can't use the network. I know
where the right driver is - I can get it from a running system - but how
do I get it into a bootnet.img? Is there any way to create these images
with the drivers needed?

It seems as the ext2 file systems are made with the "sparse
superblock" option, that current Findext2 does not support. It can be
seen that the partition location is only correctly calculated for
Block 0.

By comparing the numbers for the first and the second partition, it
however can be seen that the damaged partition (superblock 0 is
missing) began cylinder 203, head 1, sector 1.

This is before the end of the current FAT32 partition, since the
information in the FAT32 boot sector is used.

A procedure can be this:

All files in the FAT32 partition that are located cylinder 203, head
0, sector 1 or later are backed up, and then deleted.

The FAT32 partition is truncated so it ends cylinder 202, head 239,
sector 63.

The extended partition table in cylinder 203, head 0, sector 1 is
recreated.

A file system check is made for the first ext2 partition, using the
correct parameters for superblock to use. Currently I cannot say what
these parameters are. Also I am no expert in ext2 internals, so I do
not know if there would be a more safe procedure.

In stead of editing the FAT32 partition, it is an option to backup the
data, delete the partition, and then recreate it with the correct
size. For the case that you want this solution, I will post a batch
file to edit the partition tables tomorrow.

Editing the FAT32 partition is to complicated to do in news, but I can
do it in mail. Do it yourself tools may exist, but I do not know them
well enough to recommend them.

What problems are you having exactly when making the partitions? I might have
had to same problems you had. See an earlier post with a similar name for the
details. I just used fips to do the partitioning. Neither version of fdisk
worked well for me (and neither did fips, but I manipulated it a little).

Yes the export file has read and write on all systems. I installed two
Redhat 7.0 machines to day the same way and they work fine. So
I guess the Redhat 6.2 version of nfs is broken....

Subject: rebuilt kernel: modprobe fails
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 22:37:42 -0000

hi,

I recently rebuilt my kernel as I added an ISDN card that I needed module
support for. Having run 'make modules' and 'make modules_install' after
creating the kernel image, the driver for my card is located at
/lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel/drivers/isdn/hisax/hisax.o

After booting the box, I try to load the module and get the following
response:

# modprobe hisax
modprobe: Can't locate module hisax

# modprobe hisax.o
modprobe: Can't locate module hisax.o

An old kernel (2.2.14-3) still has a directory under /lib/modules too, and
a sym link file called '/lib/modules/current' was pointing at this folder.
I changed the sym link to point at 2.4.1 but that didn't help.

There are also several apps that consistently complain that
"/boot/System.map contains incorrect kernel version" although nothing else
seems to be failing. I found nothing in the kernel how-to that explains how
to update System.map or why modules would fail to be found by modprobe.
Don't even know if the two are related.

Can anyone help??

Many thanks,
