Hi all,

I've download the RH 7.0 and wanna make my own CDs. However the files in
i386/en/RedHat/RPMS are more than 700MB in size, I coundn't get them all
burned into one CD, so I put them in two different CDs, just like the README
said, but it truned out that the installation program complain about can't
find the setup-2.3.4-1.noarch.rpm, and abort the installation. Can anyone
give me a listing of the file of both CDs?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of testing a new server for my company that is based on
an Intel L440GX+ motherboard. It came installed with Windows 2000, and when
we tell Windows to shut down it would power down the server. When I
installed RedHat Linux 6.2 & the 2.4.1 kernel and tried to use either
/sbin/poweroff or /sbin/shutdown -p it would shut down linux but it never
powers down the server. I've gone through all the BIOS settings I can think
of and ensured that APM is compiled into the kernel. What am I missing?
What do I need to do to get linux to power the machine down on shutdown? We
need this because we have a few dozen linux systems in our server room and
need to have them power down automatically in the event of a power failure
so our UPS can keep critical systems up as long as possible.

Two people I work with who run linux at home say they had no problem getting
linux to power their machines down and can't think of why it's not working
for our company servers...

Thanks,

-Bruce

You can get both of the RedHat 7.0 iso images and then burn them to CD.

and it worked.

On one of our office machines (running Linux) we have 6 nfs
mounted file servers. the /var/log/messages file (and the system
console) is full of the following errors:

Mar 14 05:46:37 linux64 kernel: lockd: failed to monitor 10.3.11.10
Mar 14 05:46:37 linux64 kernel: lockd: cannot monitor 10.3.11.10

Any clue as to what that error is? Why only the server "10.3.11.10"
and not the rest on the mounted servers? We can get/use/put files
to that server w/o any problems. The /var/log/messages file is MB's in
size.

BTW... What is "lockd"? Can it be removed?

Subject: cdrdao and cd-reading
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 19:27:11 +0100

Well, has anyone some experience with using cdrdao for cd-duplication?
Basically, I want to use that program (V 1.1.3) to make a copy of an audio
CD. It seems as if by design cdrdao is able to both read the original CD
and write the destination CD. That works so far, with the small problem
that cdrdao doesn't seem to be able to use my CD-ROM drive for reading -
I've already tried cdrdao with explictly specifying all of the
driver-options that it supports, but without success. cdrdao is able,
however, to read an original CD that I place in my CD-Recorder.

Of course, it's not really a problem reading the original CD in the
recorder, then putting a blank CD in there and start the write process. It
does, however, make it impossible th simply put the original CD in the
CD-ROM drive and the blank CD in the recorder and then simply start a
shell script that does the rest.

For background information, I'm using both an ATAPI CD-ROM drive and
writer. I have, as required for CD-writing, SCSI Emulation enabled in the
kernel. My drive and recorder should be rather standard-models, here's the
type info for them:

<6>scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
<4> Vendor: E-IDE Model: CD-ROM 52X/AKH Rev: A60
<4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
<4> Vendor: LITE-ON Model: LTR-12101B Rev: LS15
<4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
<4>Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
<4>Detected scsi CD-ROM sr1 at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
<4>sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 8x/52x cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
<6>Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
<4>sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

Note that the CD-ROM drive works fine when trying to read out data using
(for example) directly via dd or when reading out audio with cdda2wav or
cdparanioa.

Any information on success stories or similar problems when using cdrdao
for reading discs in a normal ATAPI CD-ROM drive are welcome.

Nils

Please install the imap-x.xx-xx-xxxx-rpm package attached to your
distribution CD and modify the /etc/inetd.conf to unconment the entry

pop3,map4.etc as per your requirement. Then restart the inetd daemon,
see

If you dloaded it file by file, you've wasted a gigabyte+ of bandwidth.
You should have gotten the iso's, each of which is a ready to burn image
of the cd it goes on.

I installed, to my surprise, Slackware 7.1 on a 486DX with 8meg RAM and 2
HDs of 200 meg each.

I installed on a partition the hda that has only 150 mgs or so. The
partition is quite full.

Now I have partitioned hdb to have another 150 megs available for Slackware.
Only I tried to copy /usr to hdb and I ran out of space. How can this be?
The second partition has the same size and /usr exists with all the rest on
hda!
(type ext2, native Linux)

Next, I'll want to change fstab.conf to account for the new location of the
directory on hbd2, in fact. Do I copy /usr before or after changing fstab?
Do I copy before or after rebooting?

Tks for any help given,

Denis

First you mount the second disk to /mnt, then you copy the content of
/usr to
/mnt umount the second hd, now you move (mv) /usr to /usr-old.
Create /usr and mount the second hd to /usr. Now you can change fstab,
that
your second disk will be mount proper in case of reboot. Case
everything is fine,
you can delete now /usr-old...;-)

Don't forget to use the -p switch cp has...

Good luck

Try checking the kernel configuration by using cd to get into the
/usr/src/linux directory. If it doesn't exist, get the kernel header & source
files. Then, do a make menuconfig. Look around in the menu system for a
poweroff command. If that item is not checked, check it, and recompile the
kernel. If you prefer X, do make xconfig insrad of make menuconfig. N.B. You
must have a command prompt in the /usr/src/linux directory otherwise the make
commands will fail.

Subject: CUPS confusion
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 21:21:45 -0000

I have an HP Deskjet 690C, which was working okay before, but graphics
were coming out pixelated, so I decided to install CUPS and see if I
could get an improvement.

Unfortunately, Linux printing is completely foreign to me, and I'm
having problems getting CUPS to work for me. I have gone into
http://localhost:631/printers on my web browser and installed a
printer. Last night, I selected "print test page" and the printer
spitted out loads of garbage and then started feeding sheets
continuously until it ran out of paper. This morning, I have done
the same thing and the test page will not even appear in the list
of queued jobs.

I have several drivers to choose from, including:
HP DeskJet 690C, Foomatic + pcl3
HP DeskJet 690C, Foomatic + cdj670
HP DeskJet 690 series, CUPS+GIMP-print v4.1.5
HP DeskJet 690C, Foomatic + stp-4.0 (GIMP-Print)
I'm confused as to what these all do. Is 'Foomatic' a seperate
script that I need to install? If so, where would I find it?

I had it suggested to me that I could set up a printer by
typing 'lpadmin -p foo1 -m DeskJet_690C-cdj670.ppd
-v parallel:/dev/lp0'. However, on doing so, I am told that
'lpadmin: add-printer failed: The requested resource was not
found on this server'. I have a directory on my system at
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/ which contains a whole lot of gzipped
drivers. Should these be decompressed before I attempt to set
up a printer?

Any help would be much appreciated.

How many times are you going to post this (with fake e-mail address) and
NOT read the answers? A ppp connection needs 2 IP addresses, one for each
end of ppp. You only specify 1 (the remote), so is it any surprise that
pppd cannot determine what to use for the local end of ppp?

Is "optins.srv" really spelled that way? The 'proxyarp' option is
meaningless without an ethernet connection. See below.

Try specifying an IP for both ends of the connection:

192.168.0.1:192.168.0.25

Or if a remote IP is specified in 4th field of pap-secrets:

192.168.0.1:

You either need a different name for your modem connection, or just use
'localhost' instead of 'gtech' for your hostname (since you are not on a
network anyway).

Well, when I couldn't get my fa311 (or 312 - can't remember) to work
properly, I dropped back to the 310TX (Netgear) for $20 and it works 100%
flawlessly just by using the tulip drivers that are already part of the
standard kernel distribution.
