Well either ignore the international languages, or stick to US/UK only

kernel bootparameter apm=power-off
append = "apm=power-off"
this is importand in multiprocessorsystems

I'm trying to get an ethernet card working. Maybe it already is. I don't
know. The card is a TRENDnet TE100-PCIWN. I built support into my 2.2.16
kernel. On bootup I get
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.00 entry at 0xf38b0
PCI: Probing PCI hardware
PCI: Assigning I/O space 5800-58ff to device 00:70
PCI: Enabling I/O for device 00:70
...
The PCI BIOS has not enabled the device at 0/112! Updating PCI command
0101->0105.

eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0x5800, IRQ 10, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff.
so at this point it seems (as I understand things) to be working, or at
least found by linux. But then when I try to create an interface with
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
I get a message
eth0: RTL8139 Interrupt line blocked, status ffff.

Hi All-
I am wanting to intall Linux from scratch (meaning from the point of having
a clean hard drive no OS installed). But here is the kicker, I am tired of
distributions. I want to do this the hard way. If anyone has information
(sites that offer documentation is the best) on how I can learn to install
linux this way or a book to recommend I would be most appreciative.
As I said, I am able to successfully install linux from distribution CDs and
can compile new kernals, but what I want to do is recreate what an
installation CD would do (tweaking it of course HEHEHE).

I just installed Debian Linux on my pc which is sharing space
with Windows95, FreeBSD, and Plan9.
I would like to mount my FreeBSD partition/slice from
linux, but it doesn't seem to want to work entirely.
I can mount root but nothing beyond that. I use the
following to mount it:
mount -t ufs -o ufstype=44bsd /dev/hda7 /mnt
I presume something is corrupted. What is wrong and can
it be repaired so that I can grab some files off it?
Below is some info... I don't know how to interpret it.

$ man lilo # RTFM on lilo :)
This is the option you want
-C config-file
lilo reads its instructions about what files to map from
its config
file, by default /etc/lilo.conf. This option can be used
to specify
a non-default config file.
# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy # mount that linux boot floppy
# lilo -C /mnt/floppy/etc/lilo.conf # update lilo on the boot floppy
# umount /mnt/floppy # unmount that linux boot floppy

What doesn't work (hang, error message)? What happens when you do the
following (or sg1 if that is your cdrom):
cdrdao read-cd --device /dev/sg0 --driver generic-mmc -v 1 test.toc
I can read-cd from my ATAPI dvd-cdrom in scsi emulation with the above
command. My problem is figuring out my usb cd writer, which barely reads
much before hanging when mounted as a cdrom. cdrdao can read disk-info,
but hangs on read-toc from the usb writer. Write similation hangs with
cdrdao or cdrecord.

Hi,
I recently got a copy of linux mandrake from PC world. I decided to try it
on my old hard drive first so I didn't risk losing data. I had windows 98 on
there and I booted from my CD-ROM drive then I followed the installation
process no worries installing it (I chose to delete win98 because I didn't
need it), then after all the files were installed my monitor,
videocard, modem etc. were done it re-booted then it came up with the GRUB
selector I chose linux then all I get is alot of dos like text saying OK
then after all that I get to another dos like screen with a picture of TUX
and LINUX in big writing it says login & password that works ok but then
nothing happens. I have never used linux before but trying to make this work
was frustrating can someone please help me ASAP!

well your right about hsi "doh" atitude..but in the linux world one
really must be willing to do their own work... Theere are so many
differerent machines, periperals, and ways to configure linux others
really can't alwys give a step by step... They tend to need to know
where you've gone wrong (which prsupposes that ypou tried to do it on

Highly doubtful. Why? The AirCard 300 doesn't behave like a "normal"
device that Linux can handle. Other cards, such as the Novatel Wireless
Merlin work fine, because they present themselves to the OS as a serial
UART device, so the standard PCMCIA serial drivers work with it. That
is, it looks like a plain old modem. Of course, you'll have to adapt
scripts to work with it. Last time I used CDPD, was using a really old
Sierra "brick" modem, and it actually used a SLIP connection. I believe
the Merlin will work with PPP though, making it easier to deal with.

Just out of curiousity... Is there some reason you cannot do the
installation in text mode? I have seen this with video cards that were
sensed but for some reason Xconfigurator or anaconda or whatever cannot set
up the session correctly. My diamond viper used to have similar effects on
teh GUI installer so I just did text installations all the time. You may
have to setup the card manually for some reason. I often think that is the
preferred way.
Why not do the install in text mode, play around a bit with all in wonder
card using either Xconfigurator or xf86config and see where you get?
