Is your RAID device supported by hardware or is it a software RAID?

What RAID level are you using?

If you are trying to do RAID5 in software, I wouldn't be at all surprised if
the system becomes extremely unresponsive during dump. If it's hardware, it
shouldn't be that bad, although RAID hardware can act as a bottleneck,
especially under RAID5.

Yes, but I felt some urge to answer, without knowing the original

Sure. But if they chose to post in a national language, it may have
different reasons (e.g. being a newbie, but also hoping for help in
the fraction of the audience which understands the article, and this
fraction may be large enough for languages like German, French etc.)

Of course, in general it is better to chose a national group if it
exists (as it is in our case).
Yet imagine Spanish speakers who despite -let's say- a national group
(in Spain) will get a larger audience when posting in Spanish in an
international group where people from Spain, Latin America etc. listen
and can communicate with greater ease than in English.
I have nothing against that and don't see a need to shake my head,
when I see such articles. Since I don't download article bodies, but
only headers, it isn't any problem with wasting one's download time,
and last but not least, it happens rarely enough to not be a general
problem: Why always make a problem of things that happen rarely, just
*because* they might be a problem once they happen more often? I
believe that such foreign articles will always be rather rare and
therefore a non-issue. But that's just my opinion.

But I guess that's far too long a reply for such a banal phenomenon
now and I would like to end this thread, you stay with your opinion
and I with mine. ;-)

In your /etc/modules.conf file, add the following line

alias eth0 ne.o <-you may already have this
options ne io=0x220 irq=5

The second line gives hard values for linux to use. This has worked for
me in the past even when Linux absolutely couldn't see the card on its
own.

*Note*.. Your 'io' and 'irq' will probably be different.. If you can
boot to windows, you can check to see what io and irq your card uses..
Use those values in the modules.conf file..

Hey,

I have a dual Pentium 200 system running the Redhat SMP kernel, and I was
adding 128 megs of memory to the current 80 that I had, and when Linux
boots up, I get all sorts of random, but serious errors. Sometimes it
can't find the main partition, other times it makes it into X and won't
let me login because a service fails. Back to the original configuation,
everything works great.

Do I need to do something special when adding memory?

Thanks,

Subject: Maximum partition size/SCSI drive size

Hi,

I'm trying to configure a server with mandrake 7.2.
I got a RAID 5 disk array composed by 6 disks (6*34Gb = 204Gb) .
This disk array is accessible from 2 logical drive of 70Gb and 110Gb.

When I run diskdrake, I configure the following partitions:

Disk0-70Gb
=============
/mnt/win 2Gb
/ 500Mb
swap 2Gb
/usr 4Gb
/var 5Gb
/home 24Gb
/u01 2Gb
/trf 31Gb

Disk1-110Gb
==============
/u02 110Gb

After 2 hours, diskdrake fails when formatting partitions (unable to read
partition table)

IDE drives seems to be limited by 33Gb due to 65535 cylinder limit
(Large-Disk-HOWTO)
Is anyone can told me the maximum partition size allow by linux (mandrake
standard kernel) and if SCSI drives are limited like IDE drives?

Thanks for your help,
Stephane.

Specifically, the Bell Laboratories division of AT&T. Also known as

RedHat's cd should be a bootable one (since 6.0). just tell your BIOS to

You shouldn't. You may have bad memory. There could also
be an issue with your motherboard and the memory. Some older
motherboards cannot recongnize as much memory (though I don't
think that would cause the problems you are seeing)

If you have some othe memory to try in might be worth a shot.
Thats my best guess.

Hi folks.

I've been trying for a day now to get Mandrake 7.1 to display in 1152x768 in 32
bit colour on my Taxan Ergovision 975 19" monitor, and it insists on doing
1600x1200 instead. Lovely for big photos, but text is a little
bit small. Ctrl-Alt-minus takes me right down to 64x480 in 8 bit colour. The
VGA card is an ATI Rage Fury. In Windows 98 (ugh) the monitor is quite happily
doing 1152x768 at 100 Hz, so I know it's possible. Can anyone help me? Below
are selected blurbs from my XF86Config file, which was created by Mandrake and
modified by me.

Cheers for any help you can give,

Edit your /etc/inittab and set 5 as default inti mode in the 'initdefault'
line, you should
have a 3 there (standard for text-login mode).

You can find an answer (several answers) to your question on these web
pages, among others. The second of these presents an interesting
analogy, near the bottom of the page. Though this one was comparing
UNIX to the MacOS, you can substitute "Windows" for "Mac" without
changing the argument in any way. I hope you find this information to
be useful.

Hello there,

I have followed every tutorial, FAQ and other resources but can't make
my sound card work under linux. I have even bought another one, but
nothing.
I always keep getting the message: drive or resource busy.
How do I check what IRQ number is being used? How do I change it?

 Can anybody help me?

 Thank's

 Marcio

Here is a list of my output:

What version of Suse do you use? In Suse 7.0 you can change to runlevel to
3. But it should be easier to use yast. I have a german version and don't
know how they named it in english, but it should be something like:
Administration -> Login Configuration

Actually, in my exper. shutdown -h doesn't turn to computer
hardware off, it just shuts the os down. I don't know what
shutdown -p does. Shutdown -h moves the system to run
level 1 not 0 (according to Lin. in a Nut. 2nd ed. O'Reilly pg.544),
and I definately do not suggest shutting the system down in
this fashion. Also, in RedHat it comes pre-configured to
call shutdown when you hit ctrl-alt-del...(hehe made the mistake
the other day of hit ctrl-alt-del instead of ctrl-alt-F1...I chuckle..
I was pissed then though....I chuckle now.)
Like I said though, I haven't seen a Lin. sys that actually turns
the hardware off (but I haven't seen them all and there probably
is some out there that does it, etc.), shutdown -h will save all
docs, etc...so you're safe there.

Elizabeth
