Oops
You should have partitioned you disk first.

not the MBR, just the ability to change a partition table

You don't have a partitiontable, nor partitions, after
that mkfs command.

If you reinstal linux too.

Now I don't get it anymore.
the mkfs /dev/hda, just formatted the disc as one big partition.
Did you run fdisk afterwards?
show `fdisk -l /dev/hda`

Linux will definitely run on a 486, as most distros default to 386
optimizations. Its the other stuff (junk) in the box that will bring Linux
down. Good examples are noname integrated videocards, noname integrated
sound cards, winmodems, small hard drives, and a really old monitor.
People just can't pump out drivers fast enough.

I had exactly the same. I even returned the modem to the shop.
Later on I read in some URL to remove the ATZ because that
may hang the modem. Thus switch off - on the modem, and use
rp3 or kppp without ATZ to connect.

Read xinetd(1M). Check /etc/xinetd.conf and you
see that /etc/inietd.d is included. In that directory
modify ipop3, and have disable=no. Then
# kill -SIGUSR1 <xinetd-pid>

Hi.
(Im a newbie to Linux.)
I have a domain on my Linux box (hainsnet.com). Within this domain are
several mailboxes - two of them being "greg" and "g".
Whilst 'inside' the domain (my local LAN), if I send mail from "greg" to g",
the mail just comes to "greg" - not bouncing back - just as if is
redirected.
If email is sent from outside it works correctly.
I have deleted then recreating the account but the same happens. I have
never purposely set any redirections.
I have not tried sending mail from the console to see what happens as I have
forgotten the key sequence to close the message writing... :)
Please help.

It seems that the 3COM 3C905C is not fully supported ..??
Actually I've got a server with two of this NiC. The network is up and
running, and as far as I know, sometimes the network fails down, with no
messages into log files :(
The only things I can do is to ask my customer to restart the machine.
Any idea to solve this trouble ?
Thanks

Yes. But that's an unneccessarly complicated approach, and not really worth
the hassle it would cause. After all, ALL that a bootloader does really
need is the location of the kernel to be booted - as the kernel then
knows all the rest, anyway. Remember the KISS principle.

I read the man page for pump, searched the logs files i /var/log for
something that mached something like my problem, but the only thing I
could find, is this:
Mar 24 01:54:22 spookcentral ifup: Determining IP information for

Mar 24 01:54:22 spookcentral pumpd[259]: starting at (uptime 0 days,

Mar 24 01:54:22 spookcentral ifup: done.
Mar 24 01:54:22 spookcentral network: Bringing up interface eth0:
succeeded
As far as I can tell, there is no problems with my network connection,
should I just ignore the [eth0 <defunct>]??

I posted much more specific things but then nobody answered.
I compiled kernel 2.4.2 and 2.2.19 and the failure occurse with
both of them.
Kernel is loading fine but when prompting:
"Freeing kernel memory: 46K freed" the machine stops. From
this point on the init-scripts should start but nothing just stopping.
When I put this harddrive with the linux on it into my other PC
(Epox 7KXA, Athlon 600) everything works fine. But connnected
to the board with the Ali M 1487/89 on it - no chance.
I tried to load the specific Ali M14xx driver on boot, it works but
has no effect on starting INIT, which doesn't start.
I really don't know what to do or who to ask.
