Subject: sound on a toshiba tecra (suse 7 or slack 7.1)
Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2001 17:55:23 GMT
Hi, I have a toshiba tecra 720cdt and am trying to install either
slackware 7.1 (what i use no prob on my desktop) or suse 7.0
(which is similar and has tons of automated setup stuff) on it.
I have been able to install both dists with relatively little
problem *except* the sound.
with slackware i assume this will involve recompiling the
kernel which i prefer to avoid (and if i do i might as well get
the 2.4.x etc etc etc) so that kinda leaves me with suse.
When i use yast2 to try and detect the sound card (cs4232 i
believe) it can't detect it, so i try to install it manually. I
have referred to the www.cck.uni-kl.de/misc/tecra710/
documentation (which was a god send for setting up 16bit
X in suse... slack got it first time) but i am still a bit of a
novice (when it comes to sound settings) and was unsure
what settings i should put where. Any help with setting
it up (spoon fed newbie style if one can stand it) would
be *greatly* appreciated!

I know my kernels (bz) are a lot smaller
the compressed kernel image is /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage and not
/usr/src/linux/vmlinux

Old 2.2.19? There's only one kernel version 2.2.19. The article on
linuxtoday was just about the release notes, not a newer version of
2.2.19.
In regards to your earlier post, you didn't say which version you
are currently running, but its a good bet that its at least as stable,
plus 2.2.19 has some security fixes.

Subject: Epson printer configuration for LaTeX
Date: 05 Apr 2001 20:49:05 +0200
Hi,
I got an Epson 890 Photo printer, which I got to work using CUPS and
gimp-print. Printing foto's from the gimp works fine now.
But...I want to use it for postscript/LaTeX as well, but I cannot get
decent output. I does print latex, but it looks really light and at
low resolution (big dots, almost matrix "quality"). I tried to
generate higher output by modifying my config.ps for divps, and adding
720 dpi resolution, but that didn't help.
How can I get good latex/postscript output?
By the way, system is redhat 7, with 2.4.0 kernel, printer connected
to USB.
Thanks,
-peter

Hi,
I have recently installed Redhat 7.0 on my new laptop.
The install went OK (although it would not run in GUI mode)
I have set up XF86Config so that it correctly recognises my Sis630
chipset video card, and am running in framebuffer mode.
Everything seems to work fine in command mode.
When I run startx, it starts up the X server, with Gnome. However, the
screen is visible in console 1 (CTRL-ALT-F1), while the current
console is set to 7, which shows a blank pale grey screen.
What then happens is that the keyboard and mouse do not respond at all
when I am in console 1, apart from the CTRL-ALT-n to switch to another
console (and CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot).
But if I switch to console 7, anything I type or do with the mouse
there actually occurs on console 1. As you can imagine, this makes
things rather tricky. After this point, I have *no* console on which I
can type and see what is happening at the same time.
Can anybody give me any suggestions as to how I can get the display
and the keyboard/mouse on the same console?

You're asking the wrong people then. Until you start using ReiserFS or
another journaling filesystem you are risking major filesystem
corruption.
Why are you cross-posting to groups such as comp.os.msdos.misc and
sci.research.careers??? Talk about shotgun approach to getting an
answer. If you didn't get decent suggestions from the linux newsgroups
for this most basic of problems then you should subscribe to one of the
vendor e-mail lists. The SuSE English list is very helpful, don't know
about the Caldera or Redhat ones as I haven't checked them in years.

Yes, but not non-destructively, which I believe is what the original
poster wanted, although he didn't say so explicitly.

In this particular case, the traditional UNIX solution to the problems
PartitionMagic solves is Logical Volume Manager (LVM), which is still
very much in its infancy on Linux.

We use MICQ which is a basic console client. There's others.
RedHat and Debian package the programme (the other distros probably do
too), so it's simply a matter of locating said package and installing.
If a suitable package is not available for your system, the source is
available, which only takes a few moments to compile.
What problems are you encountering?.

Unless something's changed in PM 6.0, the problem isn't that PM doesn't
rewrite /etc/fstab CORRECTLY, it's that it doesn't rewrite /etc/fstab AT
ALL. When you add or delete a partition, some or all of your partition
numbers are likely to change, invalidating /etc/fstab. This isn't a
difficult problem to overcome *IF* you're prepared for it -- you need to
either predict what the partition table will look like after the changes
and make your /etc/fstab changes BEFORE shutting down and running
PartitionMagic; or you need to have a complete emergency system so you
can make the changes to /etc/fstab after modifying your partitions,
without booting your regular Linux system.
FWIW, PM can also cause problems when adjusting the partition on which
the kernel resides, because if it moves the kernel file, your LILO (or
GRUB) installation will no longer point to the kernel file. For this
reason, you should have a DOS boot floppy with LOADLIN and your current
kernel ready for a boot that way in case this problem occurs.

Best bet is re-install Linux again, you will learn more stuff when you keep
on re-installing!
