no.
This command should be all that is needed:
/sbin/dhcpcd -d -I CO3001551-A eth1
change the host-ID and interface to suit your system of course.
Run the command, then check your log files.
dhcpcd should also show up with
ps ax | grep dhcp
Make sure there is only one dhcpcd process.
if you are using ipchains, then this will allow the appropriate
dhcp transactions:
ipchains -I input -i eth1 -p udp -s 0/0 67 -d 0/0 68 -j ACCEPT
ipchains -I output -i eth1 -p udp -d 0/0 67 -s 0/0 68 -j ACCEPT
change eth1 to your Internet interface. For better security
also use the host or subnet address of your dhcp server in those
rules.
BTW, you cross posting is excessive, comp.os.linux.x is irrelevant
for this subject.

Hi,
as I described yesterday, there is a known bug in RH 7.1. The aic7xxxx
driver doesn't work for all cards, installation hangs. The box is an PIII
750 with 256 mb with PCI Adaptec 29160N.
A stupid workaround for this, that I have found, is: For upgrade from RH7
to RH 7.1 use "linux noprobe" and select the "experimental aic7xxxnew" as
module-driver, without any parameters.
So I could really do the upgrade, the SCSI-CD reads fine and do the rpm
stuff. But the SCSI CD and CDR is broken past the installation, only the
jaz and the hd's works fine.
If I mount the CD, the systems haengs hard. I think, the problem is the
always the aic7xxx. The SCSI-Bus resets always, I think, its a loop.
What can I do to fix this? Should I use an older driver and make new
initrd-2.4.2-2.img with this inside? I don't know at this time, if the
driver inside of the initrd-2.4.2-2.img is the new ore the old one - or
the same new as for the installation-time.
Same hardware works right on RH 6.0/6.1/6.2/7.0. Have
never seen this before. Please, one hint for me...

Yes, you can. The package you need samba. It includes a tool called

Keith,
I think you are being a bit harsh on Krstanovics' modem. As its ISA, it's
unlikely to be a winmodem - you would really struggle to get the bandwidth
down the ISA bus. I go along with the 'upgrade' instructions for winmodems
though.
Since it works on IRQ#3 and COM2, it is more likely to be a real modem and a
16550A based serial port on the same card and is being masked by the
motherboard serial port. I have not seen winmodem installs clash with real
ports.
The setup is turn off the motherboard COM2: serial port to let Linux see the
ISA card. After the serial port can be seen, just tell Linux that it has a
modem on that port. Better would be to move the modem to COM3 or COM4.

Roy Bamford

Hi,
have solved the problem cleanly now by myself.
1. changed in /etc/modules.conf from
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
to
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx_mod
(the new one)
2. maked an new initrd with this new driver inside:
/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.2-2.img 2.4.2-2
3. wrote new boot entry
/sbin/lilo -v -v
Works very well. No SCSI-Bus looped reset anymore.

Hi to all,
I've a big problem with cups (1.1.6-10.1mdk). I can't do any admin task
because when I try to do admin (via www on the computer where cups is
installed), a login is requested. I enter root as login name and my root
password as password but the connetion is refused. The security level of
my system is set to medium. When I try to use kups, it said "can't connect
cups server, check you options" and crash if I try to add a printer ! I've
just compiled cups-1.1.6-21mdk.src.rpm from mdk 8.0 and installed it but
I've got the same problem. It seems to me it is like a PAM problem but...
Pam version is 0.72-13.1mdk.
Can anyone make suggestions.

For your other problem: check the Compaq site, perhaps they have written

The last I heard, the maintainer of these modules/howto's was having some
problems with his ISP ( which makes it difficult to download the modules ).
If you haven't already, you'll need to download the source code for the modules,
the software also contains the instructions needed for
installation/configuration of the Symphony PnP ISA Wireless NIC's. If you're
unable to connect to site, I'll make arrangements to send you the source (224KB,
.tgz )

Yeah, 8 MHz would really constrict the data. I should have thought of
that.

At that point, it might also be a good idea to change the IRQ on the
modem
to some unused IRQ (5, 9, 10, 11, whatever's available that the modem
will support) and use setserial to tell Linux about the change. I'm not
really up on the latest advances, but conventionally it's been a bad
idea
to share IRQs.

Did you remember to upgrade pppd to at least 2.4? Earlier versions
don't work with the 2.4 series kernel. Check out

Saying that loses you all credibility. The isa bus is 8MHz. At 32 bits
that would be 240M baud. It should be able to cope with a 56K baud
modem by running at about 0.02% of capacity, no?

Halloo!
I recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.0 on my laptop(233 MMX, 3GBHDD,
64MBRAM). It's up and running, and apart from the backspace and delete keys
which I cannae figure how to fix... the rest is fine. However, I've started
reading the Linux System Administration Guide (thanx to all of you who
recommended me good books to read!!). I am a newbie, of course! I was
reading on Partitions where it says that you could have more than one
Primary Partition on your HDD. Is this really possible?
I used MSDOS fdisk for making my partitions (expecting to get Partition
Magic this week). I have the following
Primary 35% (1GB)-where Windows 98 is sitting
Extended 65% of which
Logical 1 (d:) 50% (1GB) - used for data
Logical 2 (e:) 50% - this one is now with Linux native (1GB)- no longer
called e:
The question is:
Could I reduce (using Partition Magic, or fdisk) the size of logical 1 to
say, half it's actual size in order to increase the space given to Linux? I
have intentions of extending it's use. Gonnae get StarOffice soon too....
basically, I want to transform gradually my Microsoft PC into a Red Hat
Linux machine. I am still learning at this stage.
Ta very much!
PD: If someone could help me with the backspace and delete keys... strongly
appreaciated!!

Samba woes?
I've been trying to build a small network using ftp/telnet/samba tools on a
linux box to allow the other windows machines (nt/2000) to connect to the
linux box (server). I've been running a win2k machine as a server (quite
nicely) and have bought into the jive that linux is some rock solid platform
that when you switch, "your users will notice the performance improvement
and may comment that the server doesn't crash anymore". I've installed
RedHat
7.0 and finally got telnet to work (although the connect time takes
forever), ftp still won't allow connections from another machine and as for
samba...
well forget it. I noticed there's a "new and improved" inetd (xinetd) and a
curious lack of documentation. GNOME seems to be very buggy (stalls, apps
freeze, etc). The hardware is as follows:
Intel P2-200
Supermicro PIII-SED MB (not the greatest, I know)
128 MB ram
20 GB hard disk
3Com network card....
I can ping machines and telnet in, but I'm stuck and I don;t have alot of
confidence in the system. My questions are:
1) where's some doc for xinetd and can I get rid of it and use inetd like
the rest of the world?
2) is GNOME flakey or is it an artifact of something else and the window
manager is suffering some problem of the OS?
3) After some digging, is it true that you can't use win2k with samba 2.0.7?
4) how can I turn the linux box (kind of a newbie here) into a domain server
so I can allow network spaces for win2k clients and allow users to use the
modem on the linux box?
I have a project I would like to port to Linux. The project requirements are
that the code runs without fail (nohup type stuff) and that if I decide to
put a gui on it, that the gui can't freeze like I've witnessed GNOME do AND
it has to be GPL...
Thanks,
Jeff.
