Make sure that "noauth" is in /etc/ppp/options . If the line that says
"noauth" is commented out, then pppd will require the remote machine to
authenticate itself, which is not what you want if you're dialing up to
your ISP. (Hey, you know which phone# you called, right?) This is
strange, "noauth" should be on by default for the mythical Normal User
that seems to be Mandrake's target market. Again, find the line that
says "noauth" and remove the # from the front of that line.

Irrelevant. /dev/modem should probably be a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS1
in this case, but if /dev/modem was pointing to the wrong place, the OP
would get different error messages.

Subject: xinetd and tftp
I am working on a project to have linux running on some
diskless workstations along with a server to supply file
services.
I have studied the DiskLess HowTo documents on this
subject.
I have a boot floppy with a boot loader for the installed
NIC. I have another PC with RH 7.0 (complete
installation -- all modules insalled), with NIC. The
switching hub indicates that each NIC is recognized and
initialized.
The DiskLess HowTo documents cover installation and setup
details using the programs boot, bootp, dhcp, and inetd.
As far as I can tell, fairly recently, RedHat began using
xinetd as a replacement for inetd.
As a result, RedHat 7.0 does not use boot, bootp, dhcp,
and inetd. Instead, it uses xinetd and bootparamd. The
DiskLess HowTo documents that are part of the RH 7.0
distribution are not up to date -- they explain the old
setup using inetd, ...
As part of the changeover to xinetd from inetd, many
installation and tuning details have changed: program
names, folders, configuration file names, and the content
of the configuration files.
I have been searching for a document that covers all of
the configuration details when using xinetd to configure
a diskless workstation: (file content, file name, and
how to start and stop the various modules).
Please suggest a reference that I can use.
Thanks in advance.

Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 11:16:30 +0800
I have some question about the
ADM8511 usb adapter under Linux Redhat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2:
After loading the "pegasus.o" , then "ifconfig" the adapter as below:
==> ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.12 netmask 255.255.0.0 or dhcpcd eth0
there are some message shows:
"pegasus.c : eth0 :link NOT established (ox7849)- check the cable
I can't connect to my Lan network, but executing "ifconfig" can
show eth0 and lo .
I also check the cable which is connected to Lan network
(10/100M switch), and the cable is pretty good.
PS: the leds on the usb adapter :
power : lit Link/Act : not lit 100M : not lit
Does anyone has similiar problem as mine? And
could anyone give me some resolution to the problem?
Thanks .

Upgrading the kernel IS upgrading the OS. The kernel is the OS.
Applications don't make up an OS.
U are just wanting to upgrade your distribution which only sometimes
includes upgrading your kernel.
To upgrade KDE you will need to visit kde.org and find out what the
version you want requires with respect to libraries and so forth.
You are getting that error with Mesa because you are trying to use RPM
4.0 to install a package made with RPM 3.0. I believe that is the
situation, if not then I got it backwards. Anyway, you have to upgrade
your RPM version I believe.
There is a way around it, u need to upgrade RPM, not your OS. You already
did that when you upgraded the kernel.

I was hoping to avoid that since I just sunk some money on the CDR :) If I
KNEW I could get red hat to run with my old hardware I would just run fdisk
and use all of my HDD for linux
But having put red hat on my other system, IBM 550mhz 10GB (partitioned in

setting but won't recognise the modem so I suspect a 'winmodem') so I still
need windows on it at the moment so we can get on the net to download howto

I have a PPro 200 with 32 MB RAM. version 5.2 was previously installed

thought that it told me that it was going to replace (not upgrade) the

during installation, however if I try to boot from the HD, right after
the POST and such, all I see is a captial "L". It's as if it's trying
to print LILO and continute booting, but it doesn't. When I boot from
the floppy, it prints this "L" and it pauses for about one second, then
it continues printing the rest of the letters "ILO" and proceeds with
the boot. Can anyone help me? Do you need more information?

X-posted to find help.
Sorry about using Win box to post - NMC (not my computer).
network is sneakernet (until I get the PCMCIA ethernet card going)
Hello Everybody!
I have a KDS Valiant 6480 laptop and a copy of RH6.2. The laptop is
supposed to do (and did under WinME) 16.7 million colors at 1024x768. I
would be happy with X running at 800x600 @ 8bpp, elated at 1024x768 @
16bpp.
Vid card is claimed to be a Trident Cyberblade. The Wme driver was a
Trident Cyberblade A1i AGP with 8MB video shared from RAM (128MB).
Startx messages identify the chipset as TGUI 9420DGI and TGUI9430DGI.
This confuses me.
XF86Setup, Xconfigurator and setup selected XF_SVGA as the Xserver. I
can't get it to run at even 640x480 8bpp. If I choose XF_VGA16 as the
server, I get a really junk screen at 640x480 8bpp, but it does function
properly (like using a microscope to read a billboard).
Here are the startx messages:
XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: January 8 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than
