I just installed Linux 7.1. In combining three different kernel levels in lilo.conf I
now get "map segment too big" in response to both lilo -v and mkbootdisk.

Anyone know what causes this or a FAQ I can read to resolve this?

Thanks, BobH

I downloaded the two iso files from the mirror sites and burned them to
CD's using CD Creator. I selected ISO 9660. Should the install boot from
the CD during start up? I'm running Win 98 and I have CD first in the
list of boot devices in the BIOS setup. Your help is appreciated.

Sounds dodgy. You could try booting from the cd, mounting your /
partition, and typing df -h to see if you have any spare room. But I'm
not sure if you have a running system or not...
My advice: download Slackware 7.1 (7.2 on it's way soon...). It just works.

Downloaded the abisuite-0.7.14-gtk-RH7.0-1.i386.rpm package.

I have an absolutely standard Redhat7/KDE installation.

installed with
rpm -ivh abisuite-0.7.14-gtk-RH7.0-1.i386.rpm

I enter "abiword" in a terminal window as instructed in
readme, it says something about not having Times New Roman Fonts
installed, and running some install script, and aborts. There is no
script, as far as I can see. And the link in the instructions points
nowhere.
Never had trouble with earlier versions. Anyone know how to
get round this bug ?
PS, what is the linux/KDE equivalent to windows's printscreen
or shift-printscreen (capture screen and capture active window,
respectively ? I use this a lot in windows, would like to do the same
in linux)
        TIA

I am tried what Ketil had posted which was
"This is a classic. You have a modular kernel with your SCSI drivers as
modules. What you need is either to kompile your SCSI into the kernel or
make yourself a init ramdisk (initrd). For initrd you need ramdisk
support, loopback device support and initrd support kompiled into the
kernel."

It seems to boot now other than my eth0 and eth1 fail now, but I think I can
get that working.

The problem you're having is that all of the ISOs and mirrors listed on the
mandrake website are missing the Boot directory. This makes it impossible to
install mandrake 8.0 even if you make a boot disk.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? I've e-mailed the mandrake people
and have received no reply yet.

I'd suggest that you look at running Squid instead of Apache for this type
of an application. This might resolve your issue.

Or you could try a neat little program called Sharity, it works the opposite
of the way Samba does (access Win shares from Linux). You can download from
http://www.obdev.at/products/sharity/index.html
It's real easy to install and you don't have the config hassles of Samba.

When I changed from an 8MB vodoo PCI card to a 16 MB Nvidia AGP card this is
what happened:

With kudzu running, when I restarted, before the GUI started, it told me
that my old video card was no longer present, and ask if I wanted to remove
the configuration. Then it set up the new card. Perfectly first time! I was
extremely impressed.

Use 'ntpdate' from the xntp package to set your system time from internet
time servers and then 'setclock' to set your CMOS clock/calendar to match.
Or do you have a timezone problem where it is off by hours?

man lpr

There is NOT supposed to be a space after -P, so maybe it is trying to
print to default printer 'lp' (do you have an 'lp'?). Or it could be a
problem with your hostname if that name does not have an IP.

The usual place /usr/src/linux which is a symlink to the default kernel.
If you use both 2.2.18 and 2.4.0 I am not sure if that symlink is changed
when you boot to the alternate kernel. See what it points to or change it
to point to the one you want to use.

How's about going to www.linuxdoc.org and looking for some HOWTO's on
connecting your Linux box to the internet, then come back here when you're
questions are more specific :) This is not meant to be rude, the HOWTO's are
the best place to start to get you familiar with what's required !

Xinerama seems like this really cool feature that was implemented with
version 4 of XFree but it's like religion - nobody wants to talk about it! I
can find almost nothing on the web about Xinerama or multiheading in
general. Window Manager sites, XFree86 docs, FAQs, there is almost no
mention of it. There is a xinerama HOWTO, but it is quite short and doesn't
cover much of the Window Manager and Desktop arena.

I can't believe there are so few people who want to run two monitors with X
given that monitors and graphics cards have come down so much in price.

There really should be a multiheadx.org! Does anyone have any pointers to
some useful information on the whole topic of mulitheading X?

Thanks :)

this are very few informations. What info fills your screen? Write it down and
send it to this newsgroup. Please tell us exactly what hardware you have
(graphics card, IDE devices on what controller etc.). There is the possibility
that your graphics card simply does not work. I had this problem with my old

Ever tried install in text mode? Or perhaps you should try another Linux
