You can try:
"cat /dev/zero >/dev/hdaX"
where hdaX is the partition you want to format. This will wipe the
partition with "zero" then use mkfs.ext2 or mke2fs to format it back to
ext2 format.
man mkfs
man mke2fs
You might also read "man badblocks" if you want to see what it may find.

FYI
It looks as though your Windows ME machine is having some troubles.
(Frankly, I am seriously UNDERWHELMED with Windoz ME).
My readings on ME is that it was a bad upgrade. I went to 2000 and love it.
For networking issues this is a great site.

See "-X" option in man page for hdparm.

Thanks for your post.
Nope, I don't use any software firewall.
I already tried connecting the WinME machine with one of the
other with a crossover cable with no luck.
Following your tip, I changed the IP to use DHCP and the result
is the same. I see any machine in Internet but none in my Intranet.
I have tried everything that came to mind and nothing worked.

Are you sure that all of the machines are set up to use the same subnet
mask? I'm guessing that there's a problem with that setting on the
WinME box. Since you're using the 192.168.x.x series of RFC1918 addresses,
you should probably be using a class C (255.255.255.0) netmask.

I'd be a bit cautious. I've had no problems with using /dev/st0 and
ide-scsi, but I've heard from someone else who says he gets timeout errors
after 30-45 minutes of writing. Make sure you can back out.

Not using KDE sound events to test it by any chance? I've had problems
getting that to work, and spent fruitless hours trying to debug the sound
drivers when the real problem was higher up.

How did you ping? With names or with numbers. If it works with
numbers, but not with names then there is a nameserver problem.

Hello,
I have to upgrade my libc 2.1.1 to 2.1.3 (jdk 1.3 needs this upgrade).
I work with Suse 6.2 and my system's components are :
Make 3.79
Gcc 2.95.2
Binutils 2.9.1.0.25
Bash 2.03
Sources of glibc 2.1.3 are in /opt/progs/glibc-2.1.3 and i created a
distinct directory
for building (/usr/local/glibc-build).
I ran configure with LinuxThreads and Crypt Add-ons, and with
--prefix=/usr
Configure runs OK
Make runs OK
My problem is :
"Make check" exits with an error on
/usr/local/glibc-build/stdlib/test-canon
(i included the file "test-canon.out")
I run "make check" again and the other tests seem to pass with success.
(i say "seem" because interpretation of some .out files is not obvious
and some
.out files are empty)
My questions are :
- What this error means ?
- Can i try to launch make install without risk ?
- Where can i find some more detailed documentation on the glibc upgrade
process ?
Thanks in advance
Olive

You can get the behavior you want if you invoke the script's shell with
the "-f" option. I'd make it like this:
#!/bin/bash -f
ssh remotename $*
Then you can do something like "doall ls '*'". You'll still have to quote
the glob so that the invoking shell doesn't expand it, but with the -f
the script's shell won't expand it either.
Give that a shot and see if it works for you.

I think I solved the problem.
Someone asked me to send the result of ipconfig command. When
executing it I saw that I also had an ip address, of same range, in my
Satellite reception card (Satellite Internet). It had the
192.168.123.11, I changed it to 125.0.0.1 and.... I can ping every
machine.
Don't ask me what that had to do with the problem but what I can
say is that now the problem is solved.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

I tried running gpm but whenever I do it makes my mouse unusable. After
starting gpm, the pointer moves to the upper right hand corner of the
screen and I'm unable to move it from there.
Here's some system info:
gpm 1.18.1
XFree86 11.0
kde 2.1
Kernel 2.2.14
Microsoft PS/2 Port mouse
Here's the command I use to run gpm:
gpm -t imps2 -m /dev/mouse
