Will it boot if you enter this at the lilo prompt?
linux root=/dev/hdaX
# where hdaX is the correct root partition.

I'm sorry you've been on hold for so long sir. (yes, I do work in
Customer Support).
I too have installed BigSlack, and BigSlack works the same as any
other Linux distribution, down to getting the GUI (X Windows) running.
Here's the steps you need to take:
[1] Type "startx" without the quotes.
[2] Wait for the GUI to load.
[3] Use the GUI.
I suppose steps [2] and [3] are unnecessary, given that all you have
to do is type "startx" and wait.
If you don't care for Enlightenment: if memory serves, the base
GNOME/Enlightenment setup includes an option on the menu for switching
to another window manager.
I find the Enlightenment menu difficult to add things to. You will
find it much easier to add application launcher icons (in Windows,
this would be "Shortcuts") to the desktop.
Personally, I prefer IceWM since its menu is easily edited (this makes
up for the fact that it has no icons on its destop space) and it uses
much less in resources than Enlightenment while still running all
GNOME and KDE applications.

I'm starting a C++ project which has to compile to form both an MSVC 6
command line application and an RH Linux 6.2 command line application.
I was hoping to use C++ with the Standard Library as described in "The
C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup. WiIl this be
possible ?
I ask, because as soon as I stated adding code to the class skeleton I
found I needed to add a reference to the standard library at link time.
Was I being hopelessly naive in expecting it to be linked by default ?
In the end I found it in:
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/alpha-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.66/libstdc++.a
but it doesn't seem to be in the default library path so I have to
identify the full path in the Makefile. That stuff now compiles, but is
this normal ?
Now I've added stuff that requires the #include <sstream> according to
Stroustrup. I can find sstream.h, but only in:
/usr/include/linuxconf/sstream.h
which doesn't seem to be in the default include path. When I include
this by giving the full path, the compile fails, complaining that
ostringstream is undeclared, and it does indeed seem to be unmentioned
the linuxconf sstream.h file.
So - a couple of questions:
1) is there a way to get ostringstream to work ?
2) is the Standard C++ library ready for prime time under Linux ?
Isn't its
use utterly routine these days ? Or am I trying to be too modern ?
I'm having no problem getting this stuff to compile under MSVC 6. Have
I missed something obvious under Linux ?
If the compiler that ships with RH6.2 won't do what I need, ( I guess
it must be a year old now ! ), is it simple to upgrade it to a later
gcc that
will ?
If gcc won't work with the standard C++ lib, will the Compaq C for Linux
Alpha compiler be any use ? Will that compiler coexist with the Linux
compiler ? I gather I'd still need that for building kernels !
I've just tried to get an 'on line test drive' to see if the Compaq
compiler would compile my code skeleton, but the link from the Compaq
site is broken.
If I can, I'd rather stay with a standard Linux compiler so that we can
port to Intel Linux if needs be later on.
Cheers, J/.

It means what it says. The driver doesn't find what it's looking
for where it is looking for it. You can do the obvious things that
derive from that observation ...

Yes, but it is hardly a good reason, is it! Go and look up your modem
in linmodems.org. It strikes me that this is possibly not a winmodem,
but the lucent venus chipset, and therefore doesn't need a driver.
Check it out in /proc/pci and via /sbin/lspci.

Wait! Your subject says "PCMCIA". Please don't hide such facts away only
in the subject line :)!
You can't use the ltmodem driver, which is for pci (or isa?) devices,
as far as I know. You need to load the pcmcia drivers and set up pcmcia
and select the generic serial driver. If that doesn't work, then you
HAVE a winmodem on a pcmcia card! Amazing.

Aha! So you KNOW you have to run pcmcia. You really do believe in
slipping things in sideways ...
> product info: "V90&K56Flex PCMCIA FAX MODEM", "", "", ""
Well, that doesn't tell us much. What does the generic pcmcia modem
driver make of it? You need to add the ident to the pcmcia card
database in /etc/pcmcia/ if it isn't there already, if the serial
driver isn't loaded by default when the cardmgr sees it.

that explains that there are 3 lines that need to be in the configuration file
conf.modules that are "left out of 6.2" They are:
alias /dev/printers lp # only for devfs?
alias /dev/lp* lp # only for devfs?
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc # missing in Red Hat 6.0-6.1
After putting those into the conf.modules file, then rebooting, suddenly the
printtool could find my parallel port, and then it pretty much set itself up.

No, I've been using it for quite some time with absolutely no problems. Not

Once you've done that you could make the 1.7Gb drive bootable with grub/lilo
and then change your boot order to start with D in your bios.

Subject: Mandrake 8.0 & Duplicate Win HDD's
Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 18:30:09 -0000
Hi all,
I just installed Mandrake 8.0 and noticed that when I dual-boot
to my Win98 partition, windows explorer shows a duplicate
hard drive. In other words, my D: drive appears as D: and E:,
so that my CD-ROM is bumped to F: from E:. Both D: and E:
show the same contents, disk properties, etc within windows.
This is a mess because many of my applications "remember" the
CD-ROM drive letter they were installed from, and use that
knowledge when the CD is required. And as usual with windows,
these settings are not always easily found within *.ini files
or even the registry. So, I need to get this fixed. Any ideas ?
BTW, my Mandrake installation resides in the remaining partitions
of my C: drive(i.e. windows is on 1st partition, linux native +
swap on remaining partitions). D: is completely FAT32, and E:
was my CD-ROM drive before this happened.
Thx in advance !!!!

Boot into linux and take a look in /etc/fstab if you have it setup so
that you can mount the windoz partition from linux. In the line for the
windoz partition it should have "0 0" at the end of the line without
the quotes.

Subject: Problems setting up kwintv xawtv bttv, etc
Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 19:11:20 GMT
I am trying to get a TV viewing card working on my PC. I have visted

I haven't been able to figure out why it is having trouble. I followed the

In general, I have trouble compiling other things, such as the bttv drivers
and with running xawtv. When I try running that, I get the error:
[root@goldie kwintv-0.8.5]# xawtv
This is xawtv-3.43, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.2-2)
Xlib: extension "XVideo" missing on display "mickey:0.0".
The app-defaults file is not correctly installed.
It should be either in /etc/X11/app-defaults or in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults, depending on how
your XFree86 installation is configured.
Your fault (core dumped)
Now, there is no XVideo in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/appdefaults/. I did put in
(to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4) the command Load "v41" under Section "Module".
(which is supposed to add in Video4Linux, from what I understand.
I cannot even seem to run the command (which was recommended from the kwintv
documention) the command make modules, from /usr/src/linux-2.4.2.
Can someone help me? As you can see, I am quite a newbie. Included several
examples of my problems in hope that it would help someone interpret the
problem.
